Because the perks are grouped into locked specs, there are effectively 2 "subsubclasses" per subclass. On paper it looks like there are fewer perk choices than in D1, but because they were designed around being used together, there is more synergy in each than all but a few total perk combos in Destiny. And some of them are definitely major stuff that didn't exist in any form in D1.
