Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

I was having similar problems earlier, I shut down the system and logged back on and it picked up in download speed, still took 3 hours but it picked up

I've done that among other things many times throughout the night. It picks up temporarily but then it goes right back to shit.

At the moment for no reason whatsoever it has now revised my estimate to 90 minutes. I have to go to bed for work tomorrow in 45. Fucking hell. This was my night to play, I've been at home all day. I have about an hour tomorrow and then no time this weekend.

This game is gorgeous looking.

So I did the first mission where you kill the Wizard thingy.

Then I did a ton of exploring missions (where I felt like I did the same mission like 3 times--not sure why it kept giving it to me--the one where you have to stop that Orb thing from hacking). Not sure exactly what else I'm supposed be doing or where to go.

I can't help but feel that 30 fps is huge hindrance for the MP portion of the game. It feels really sluggish to me :(

So far I'm enjoying my time with it quite a bit. Loving Bungie's polish on just about everything minus the voice acting and fps. Speaking of the voice acting, I love me some Dinklage as much as the next guy, but he is absolutely terrible as ghost - to the point of being quite comical most of the time. Lol.

I'm going to go give the Crucible another shot, and see if my stupid eyes can adapt to the lower frame rate.

I just had to los the level 3 miniboss. Holy crap. On the way there I was a L3 on top of the planes and took down two L7 mobs. I had to jump down and get more ammo and go back up. Took a minute! Found a loot box it had the ammo perk

Probably more designed for coop, I bet it's fun, too. There was an event that popped up, it was a mob running 5 checkpoints. I damaged him through 3 and he got away and it was over. No one else showed up. I can't remember if I had to initiate it or if it just started. Solo doesn't seem to be easy at all to me. Did the upgrades and about to do the L4 mission. Based on the last miniboss and what I briefly read, I'm probably about to get my ass kicked.

Just played it for about an hour with a friend and I don't know... If I wasn't playing a friend, I think I would be done with it. It still has the feel that I never liked from Halo, kinda slow, kinda floaty.

I don't like the narration. It sounds lifeless, but I can't tell if that is by design. Without the robot saying these lines without any type of robotic effects on its voice, it just sounds like a bored performance.

I'm not liking the loot drop system either. Every time I've picked up something, it was a surprise. Like, "oh hey, I didn't see that on the ground." The loot on the ground isn't easily noticeable and if you are fighting from a decent range, you may never pick up anything or even know that it dropped.

Bungie is never gonna go for 60fps. They have always prefered to make the skyboxes prettier, instead of improving the framerate.
Yes, but being cross-gen gives them the perfect opportunity to go to 60 fps on the newer boxes. Like with Battlefield - 30 frames on the oldies, 60 on the new boxes - whilst relying on very similar assets.

For slow downloads try using google or open dns settings on your network connection: use 8.8.8.8 as primary dns and 8.8.4.4 as secondary. You can find this in settings->network connection. Select your connection and use manual settings. Use default/automatic for every screen and use those above settings when you get to DNS.

fuck yeah... thanks man.. you rock!!! went from 20hours to 40 minutes!!!

(side note: should i leave the DNS settings like that or change it all back to default/automatic after the download?)

I only got to play for like 25 minutes a bit ago, but my most immediate impression is that the ADS gameplay is kinda bleh, especially coming off Wolfenstein a few weeks ago where I was hip firing like a beast.

Bungie why :(

Okay so I just played through the first mission and messed around in Old Russia, level 5 now and I reckon my loot so far has been pretty awesome.

But really, the thing getting me here is the intensity. I don't really think many other shooters offer this level of 'shit, shit, shit' when you're under fire or trying to move around. I chose a Warlock and the 'spells'(?) are fantastic, so rewarding and so much fun.

Damn, I really love this game!

I know, but that would "force" them to go for 60fps for the next Destiny games too, because the expectations would be very different after Destiny 1 being 60fps. I'm sure they want to avoid that.

Wow. This game is the real deal. Even when just doing patrols the world just beckons to you to explore every last inch. The environment oozes personality from every inch.

When is the beta out for people who preordered?

I entered the beta code on Bungies site and it says I will get the code in email, I didn't even know about the alpha.

Edit: nevermind I see it says July 17th for ps4, only another month or so.

Played about an hour. So far I feel the mechanics are good but the obscene rate at which enemies respawn really got on my nerves. I kill a bunch of enemies move halfway across the map and they're back. It was so crazy I literally had stuff I just killed respawn right there behind me and file back to where I killed them.

The free roam objectives are pretty uninspired too

Holy shit is the first co-op mission supposed to be so hard? We beat it but it took like 2 hours. Bosses had so much health and they could one shot you.

In the Explore mission one of the quests you pick up is about analyzing a fusion reaction or something. Any idea how I am actually supposed to finish that quest?

The controls are super responsive and the gameplay is really fast paced. I've loving it so far. Has anyone encountered any bugs yet because this seems like a very stable alpha so far.

Really like the single player stuff but multiplayer not my favorite. Wish it was more Halo-like and could survive more than 2 shots. Still seems like it would be fun every once in a while. Also the 30 fps in a shooter seemed more noticeable to me than it probably was in the past :/

So when does this Alpha end? By the time I get this downloaded the beta will be here. It says I have 20 hours left. My internet connection isnt wicked fast or anything but this has to be an issue on Sony's end. I downloaded a 13gb game on my Xbox One before starting this download and it was finished in less than an hour. Any suggestions to maybe kick this baby into a higher gear?

Just some randoms. Was level 4 when I joined. 6 by the end of it.

Very fun game though but jeez. Felt like I shouldn't be doing that mission at that level lol.
You're supposed to be level 6 for Devils Lair. Playing with randoms ups the difficulty level IMO. It's hard to communicate if you're dead or not. Where to shoot etc.

So I was soloing the second mission when a public event happened for me for the first time!
I automatically got excited and thought it was going to be like the Sony 2013 E3 conference where other badass Guardians were going to pop up and help me take down that fucking army and spider tank in front of me, so I go on the offensive only to realize oh too late that not one other fucking person/guardian is going to show up!
To say I got my ass handed to me for the 5 minutes or however long the event lasted is an understatement.

I'm not into FPS whatsoever but I have to admit that this game is good and I'm having fun with it! I might actually buy this!

Begged to join the discussion.

Thank you Bungie for the fun so far! I believe they were right about signing up ensuring you a place in the Alpha!

So far, this game looks phenomenal and runs very smoothly. I'm impressed with what Bungie has delivered and am even more excited for the Beta and then the actual release in September. I won't be getting off the hype train just yet ;)

So far I really like it. Played about an hour. Did some pve content, did some pvp content, then went and joined DestinyGAF. Pretty stoked about it coming out now.. Before playing, I was kinda meh about it. But not anymore. :)

Tried registering my code at 11:30 and it says I missed the time to redeem. Pretty posses at myself for waiting but wasn't sure I'd get a PS4 to play ion until an hour ago.

Have fun errbody. I'll creep the thread for more impressions.

here man this totally worked for me... went from 22hours to 40 min after changing this:

Fair point, though many people with PS4s/X1s are going to be turned off by previous gen visuals running at 30 frames. Just feels old - like playing BF4 on PS3 vs PS4.

I find the menu system a little heavy. I wish there was a way to get around without all the navigation steps. maybe it will become more important when there is more content
