Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

I am curious, has anyone been able to complete the Walking Tall bounty (complete a strike mission without dying)? I did the devil's lair strike earlier today and finished it without dying, but didn't get credit for it. Do you have to complete it on legend without dying?

One more time for the new page. I'm going to try going through the mission again when I get home, but I'm wondering if there is maybe something I'm not understanding about how bounties work.

Okay, I have to stop playing PvP or I'm going to cancel pre-order. It has so many flaws its almost aggravating. where do we put our notes or recommendation/feedback?

Here! or alpha.bungie.net

What didn't you like about it?

The moon is too expansive for the current build. I can get around easy enough but if a vehicle comes, I'm a sitting duck. I was pinned down and just couldnt fight back against the bike vehicle. Point B is in too open and is too close to a turret. The super that gives a class a super strong gun is overpowered as it seems to provide multiple shots. At least compared the the stomping power and the warlock nova blast.

The vehicles and turrets are the most infuriating. Too high powered. Some grace period. I literally died within a 3 second window of spawning. I wish I was recording. Im going to write down all my problems and then try to post on the alpha website. Im going to buy for PvE because this PvP is not for me :/ But worth the $60 for just PvE

Edit: guns need tuning as well

Do all fusions take time to spin up?

Did not like. Then it seems like it only fires 1-2 bursts.

Am I missing something?

They take a moment but the rounds in each clip probably varies depending on what rifle you have. It's a fuggin beast tho.. definitely keep trying to get used to it cause it's the closest Destiny is gonna get to a Melta Gun and it's BOSS.

It kills me on the inside that I couldn't find a lvl 8 machine gun to try out in this alpha :( and it absolutely burns me up that i'll never know what these 3 rare lvl 10+ weapons/armor i have on me will play like before my character is wiped!! Gawt Darn ya Bungie!! The first ones always free!! ISN'T IT!!!

Guys I'm loving this game. All I've been playing since the Alpha went live. I'm honestly thinking about canceling my retail Destiny game and just preordering on PSN. Seems like a game i'll always want to have on my PS4. Plus preloading means I'll have it at midnight.

I'm enjoying a lot this alpha. The progression and basically all that I've played is pretty solid.

I was on media blockout since I've seen the announcement, so I haven't read too much about the game, specially about the campaign.

Does it have a single player campaign or is it entirely focused on coop play?, I mean if it's something like Borderlands that, besides you being able to play it alone, it's really designed to played with companions.

Thanks!

I can't for the life of me figure out how to unlock Devil's Lair. I play the first story mission where i go into the building and kill the floating creature. After that it automatically takes me into orbit. What am I supposed to do exactly to unlock Devil's Lair?

This game gets repetitive fast. Hope there is more variety.

You realize you're playing an alpha right?

What tower?

... I don't want it to end :sad face:

God I could care less about PvP. It was fun though. Keep the PvP simple.

Also, the best equipment better not come from PvP awards. I don't want to be forced to PvP just to get some really cool stuff. The PvE gear better be just as strong, just as awesome looking.

I am at the point though to where I'm plain tired of FPS PvP. It has been the same song and dance since the start of it all with Quake and Unreal Tournament. Just doesnt do anything for me anymore. It was fun to run around in vehicles though and blow stuff up ... yeh ... blow stuff up.

Fighting on the Moon was awesome :) I would just sit back and take in the environment.

Also, is the level cap seriously 20?

That can't be right ... right? That seems fairly small.

This "game" is like 10% of the actual content.

Oh I bet this is maybe 1% of the overall content of the game. If even that. Old Russia is just 1 of 5 different sections within Earth in the final game right?

After playing around for some time:
I have to say I'm quite impressed with this game. The "gameplay" videos and trailers didn't look that good but once you actually play it it's great.

Be it the borderlands type of missions or just the competitive multiplayer it all works, looks and plays really well. The location I've seen so far looks great, is big and has a lot to explore, to the point that you get to some enemies that are quite overpowered (high level).
And the competitive game is just my style of shooter, plays and looks great and has a more "arcade" feeling to it.

On the bad side I hope the voice acting is a placeholder. Not all of it is bad but the dialog of the main character (or is that robot that follows you?) is terrible, it sounds like some random guy just reading the lines.
Also, I'm undecided about the fact that you play with your "story mode" gear in competitive multiplayer. On one side it's great, it feels like you are truly playing with YOUR character. But I can see this resulting in some balancing issues, what if someone finds some "rare" or "legendary" or something item.... he will have a notorious advantage, same if a person that's 5 levels higher than you enters the match and has access to better weapons and armor.

Still I've been really impressed by this game. This Alpha absolutely convinced me to buy the game at launch

Please, kind sir, humor us gaffers with your recommendations to this IMO goty, please (:

I did, post 7973. I think it could be GOTY as well. I think the hype is deserved and this is just alpha. But I'm personally not happy with the PvP aspect as I think it could use some work. But again, that is just from playing two alpha locations. I could change my tune when I play the beta. So far, the PvE aspect has my okay with shelling out the money for Day 1. PvP...not currently happy with it. I think this game will get plenty of great scores and I'm happy overall with the work Bungie has done. Easily an 90+ metacritic from what I would guess

You'd think the update from Beta to Retail wouldn't be that big...

Kinda awesome that PS4 owners got this and Hardline to play during E3.

Hopefully it sets a new precedent for E3 going forward, even if it is alphas/demos.

My impressions from the bit I played (only played Thurday, haven't mustered the motivation to go back to it):

It didn't really feel like a Halo game to me (fan of Halo 1/2/3, hated Reach/4). The sidequests were pretty bland and the objective marker not showing the final destination but rather increments towards the goal was very annoying. Multiplayer didn't do anything for me either. The tower and MMO elements are cool, the personal vehicle you have is pretty nice to drive. The game just has failed to unfortunately captivate me in the way it has others. I think its because, ultimately, it reminds me too much of Borderlands with watered down MMO features.

I know we're all focusing on the PVE (me too, I like what's been outlined so far in this regard), but anyone really worried about how competitive PVP will turn out? Honestly, I think that in its current state, it ranks amongst the worst multiplayer FPS I've played. I want to see huge improvements by the final release.

- You are fundamentally inaccurate in the air for whatever awful reason, forcing you to stay on the ground unless you have a grenade or super ready.

- Doing this exposes you to the grenades and supers in this game (unless you have incredibly good prediction and want the enemy to get a huge shot lead on you), which determine the outcome of 80% of the fights because of their huge range and damage.

- It's not like you can escape anyway because of the heavy linearization of the maps featured, bolstered by the poor choice of Domination as a gametype (and also by the fact that you have to be ridiculously close to domination points to capture them).

- If you are teamed up on, you're absolutely done for. There are almost no tactics you can use to macromanage except have a charged super move or grenade ready, which are no guarantee of your safety anyway.

- Generally, most of the fights are determined before they start. If you're at the objective (or really, anywhere near the middle of a map) and a guy comes around the corner with a super / grenade, there is no way in hell that you're surviving because the required reaction time would only result from an incredible amount of prediction...

- ...and prediction is unreliable in this game because no one communicates and the radar, which disappears upon ADS for some inexplicable reason, is ridiculously general about your opponent's location!

- Also, your sensitivity is reduced while sprinting.

There's also something that kills in one hit that I haven't been able to identify, but I won't list that as a criticism because I don't understand it at all.

Am I just insanely bad at this game even though I'm generally pretty good at FPSes? Is there some game mechanic that I'm just not getting sans the OHK weapon, or am I correct in thinking that the PVP needs serious improvement? Please discuss this with me.

I would have to agree. I tried 2 pvp games and got pwd. Didn't have adequate weapons to even be competitive. Beta should be solid. Shall see. Later. PSN: NowhereFaded
