(I'm unsure if this is even interesting to people, so sorry in advance if this is old news or really fucking boring)
So, as we are on the verge of having the beta come crashing down on us all. I thought it would be worth a moment to take a look back at what we know about Destiny, and more specially all the stuff we weren't supposed to know about. Especially the future of Destiny and the business side of all of this.
During the lawsuit between Activision and West & Zampella during 2012, we got something that rarely happens: An actual contract between an game publisher and an game developer.
Specifically this was the contract for Destiny, or Tiger.
The Bungie and Activision collaboration that would span an decade.
And in this soon to be beta world, I thought it would be interesting looking at the contract and what we know today, in order to see just what changed and perhaps a look into the future of the franchise.
Important stuff
It's important to note that some stuff has obviously changed between the time the contract was written and what actually happened - such as consoles, launch plans and timing. But I still believe that this contract gives us an honest look into Bungies plans, and what the business side of game development is actually like.
The contract this is taken from is dated back to April 2010, more then four years ago. Which is also why, the contract states things such as Xbox 720 and PS4, which was nicknames given to the current generation consoles long before they were known quantities for Bungie and Activision.
I find all of this stuff incredibly fascinating, and I hope that others will as well, and as a side benefit get an deeper understanding of all the work that goes into creating a video game, franchise and how far ahead all of this crazy stuff is actually planned.
If you want to read the contract in its entirety, and you should, it's available here -

What Bungie and Activision planned orignally
Originally Bungie and Activision agreed on the following:
- Four retail Destiny games
- Four digital expansions
- DLC releases inbetween retail and expansion releases
(Source: Page 1, section 1 - "Products")
Destiny release timing
The original release date for Destiny was, as of the contract writing, Fall 2013, which we now know was pushed by a whole year.
So something slipped at some point between 2010 and 2013 where they decided to move the game. This could either have been an decision based around the arrival of the new consoles or old fashioned delay of things taking longer then originally anticipated.
An theory as to what happened could be Bungies original plans to have Destiny release only on Xbox 360, with an PS3 version coming the year after. Ramping up to launch on four platforms on the same day would require a much large time investment, and ressources.
The future of Destiny
Bungie and Activision is planning to bombard us with Destiny for the next decade.
This will happen with sequels and expansions planned to come every other year. So one year has an retail game while the other year the big focus is an expansion. So it would go like this (I've changed the years to reflect current release timing for Destiny 1):
Fall 2014 - Destiny 1 Retail
Fall 2015 - Comet #1 Digital
Fall 2016 - Destiny 2 Retail
Fall 2017 - Comet #2 Digital
Fall 2018 - Destiny 3 Retail
Fall 2019 - Comet #3
Fall 2020 - Destiny 4
Fall 2021 - Comet #4
(Source page 2, Section 1A - Release Plan)
But what are these expansions (Comets)? As an online connected game, it would make sense to have them be large DLC packs, but that would also mean Activision loosing retail awareness for an entire year.
So what are their plans?
The contract might give os an look into this. As it explicitely says that the expansions are digital only:
Section 2; (b) Major downloadbale content expansion pack-type software releases developed by Licensor for each Destiny game (collectively, "Comets" and individually, each a "Comet" or "Comet #1", "Comet #2", "Comet #3" and "Comet #4" as applicable).
This could mean for the future, that we might see either physical download-cards come to retail next year or an GOTY like thing, with both the main game and Comet #1.
In terms of content, these Comet releases will be larger then the DLC planned to sustain Destiny between the yearly releases:
In addition, as part of the Destiny Games Licensor shall also produce DLC Releases as mutually agreed by the parties in the time periods between retail Destiny Games and Comet releases.

Which leads me to the big question:
Whether the currently announced "Expansion Pass" from Bungie, is what we can expect to be the Comet #1 release, or if that plus smaller micro-DLC releases will be what will tie users over until Fall next year when Comet #1 releases.
Right now that is anyones guess. Personally, I expect the two currently announced packs to be released within the games first six months, and then we will get an Comet #1 announcement come E3 2015.
In regards to actual production, it's worth noting that for all the releases, whether being digital or physical, everything is set to be developed by the Licensor, which is stated as being Bungie. So there will be no outsourcing to Raven or similiar Activision studios for creating DLC releases.
It's also worth remembering that since this was back in 2010, Bungie would already at this point have some part of their game ready to show Activision, and with an well documented ten year plan, we should probably expect that a large part of Bungie is as of now deep into development of Comet#1 and Destiny Game#2.
Destiny and the PC
As of now, Destiny is not announced for the PC, but we should expect an eventual PC release. Looking at the contract, it's stated that we can expect Destiny Game #2 to be avalable on PC.
I would say that this will probably hold true for the future, as I can't imagine Bungie doesn't have their hands full at the moment.
