Merge your C spirits into UC, R, and SR at first, but start selling them off once you get a sizable collection. They cost too much to use as merge material, and don't give you much in return.

Merge spirits of the same element to get more experience out of them, and merge exact same spirits to get bonus HP/ATK/SPD stat boosts.

Only use Jokers to limit break SR (and sometimes R) spirits.

Lock the spirits you want to keep so you don't accidentally sell them.

Use your free Destiny Orbs to increase the size of your collection. You'll need the space a lot more than the "premium" spirits, and those spirits aren't even that great usually anyway.

Max out your friends because that just means more rental choices and support attacks during battles. A lot of users here attach "-gaf" to their names in the game to make it easier to spot people within the community.

Try to build up a team for each element. It's tempting to min-max, but you're perfectly fine with only UC spirits for quite a while. Of course, R and SR spirits are great, but you seriously don't need to obsess over them in the beginning.

Only through merging.
Early in the game I rented spirits all the time since it was cheap. I only do it now when I need a specific support skill against a tough boss.
