Destiny receives a new Leveling System with The Taken King release. Step aside RNG.

Apologies if already answered, but if Light Levels are removed, are all current characters demoted to Level 20 when Taken King launches?

It's still bizarre to me that people were so insanely hung up on the Light system, or that this change is the thing that makes them want to come back.

The best details about the expansion are actually buried in the Game Informer print article:

-- gain weapon upgrade materials by dismantling old weapons (sounds like an enchanting/jewel-slotting type system, or maybe just the replacement of Ascendent Energy)
--No more class based armor materials (Hadronic Essence, Plasteel Plating, etc). There will be one armor material that can be used by all classes
--Special vendor that lets you pick up any shader or emblem you have already acquired on your account (no more wasting vault space on shaders). Further vault/storage solutions on the way
--Green/white weapons will be more powerful than your current legendaries
--Details about Exotic Weapons -- auto rifle that shoots chain lightning, sniper rifle that blinds enemies on a headshot, pulse rifle that reloads magazine when you land precision shots, fusion rifle that counts as a heavy weapon and acts as a portable rail gun
--Exotic items now have their "defining perk" immediately unlocked (eg You can do a blinding bubble as soon as you acquire Helm of Saint 14, no need to level it up)
--Crucible will have questlines that introduce you to Shaxx and the various faction leaders

HOLY SHIT TO EVERY SINGLE WORD.

BEST GAME EVER.

GOODNIGHT WIP3OUT

Worth a look, I will log in once the expansion goes live. Very little reason to before this goes live, though.

Dgaf is a very helpful community. Finding people to group up with there is a huge help for those who need people to do nightfall and raids, to glimmer farm with.

DestinyGaf isn't always popping. Sometimes I only have an hour to play games and that's around 2-3 a.m. EST. I've waited for 20 mins trying to get a group on DestinyGaf. Nothing against it, but it's not nearly as useful as having an in-game LFG system would be...for me anyway.

This might be what gets me back into Destiny. I was interested in TTK, but I didn't want to deal with the leveling system since I left when I was only level 26.

•progression has been reworked entirely since the game launched. Leveling from 1 to 40 is now based entirely on your own actions.

I was gonna skip the TKK, but this changes everything, maybe. Could also turn into an exp grind fest, but it does making doing anything outside of weeklies and events matter to level up.

Wow!

This almost makes up for the complete lack of content, the terible busness practices and the 60 euros i made the mistake to pay at launch.
[/sarcasm]

is the only way to play it to buyt he $60 version? thats all i see from amazon, and I have the base game + 2 DLCs

I played the demo recently and enjoyed the gunplay and I always love a good loot grind, I was still on the fence though just because i'll be playing alone and finding time and players to raid with sounds like a chore. This new level curve sounds really good though. I think I might just pull the trigger. I'd still love some form of matchmaking to be announced though.

Crap, every time I say I'm done with Destiny...Bungie keeps making awesome changes.

The Taken King is looking more and more enticing, but I'll remain skeptical for now.

It's been a roller coaster for Destiny fans today.

Good News: Peter is out; North is in. All dialogue to be replaced with something good.

Bad News: Vault of Glass and Crota's End are now obsolete. Nothing to see here since all purple raid armor and weapons will be stuck with old stats. Hope you enjoyed them, and don't worry, we'll keep them around just in case you want to show someone new to the game what used to be fun.

Good News: Light level tied to impossible to get armor has been replaced with a leveling system that actually makes sense. Also, the loot table RNG will hopefully stop giving you the same garbage.

Unless you're itching to play this month, sell destiny and pick up the 60.00 version that includes everything.

See...not sure if I can do that....

I have a PS4 from Japan and a JPN version of the game with DLC1 bought from the JPN store.

I'm living in the UK now, so I know I have to buy the JPN DLC to continue (which is fine for me) but....if I do what you suggested, wouldn't I lose my character? Assuming I bought the full set in the UK, I wouldn't be able to transfer my character over, right?

Characters are server side and are based entirely off your PSN account.

It sounds silly, but light levels aren't actual levels, so we'll all be level 20 when it launches because we're level 20 now.

Don't think theres been an official answer yet, though.

So I'd have to buy the JPN triple pack as it'd be tied to that PSN id~

If you bought the disc version of TTK (that comes with Vanilla and DLC1 and 2) and put that into your PSN with your JPN PSN account, you should have your old character.

Assuming I'm understanding your situation correctly.

What about more vault space?

Proving to be a challenge for them (thanks to last gen) so they're focusing on removing as much stuff we've been keeping in the vault as they can.

Thus shaders and emblems no longer being in there, as well as upgrade materials no longer being class specific.

Seems like a very positive change, but it's too little too late for me. Bought a PS4 just for Destiny but sold them both when I realized what sham 1.0 was. If the game ever comes to PC I might check it out again.

•progression has been reworked entirely since the game launched. Leveling from 1 to 40 is now based entirely on your own actions.

•A new behind-the-scenes reward system pays attention to the gear and weapons you already have, and not only attempts to avoid giving the same reward multiple times, but targets you for new loot that will be valuable for progression.

•You can carry more bounties at any one time, and turn them in without returning to the bounty giver.

•the Cryptarch more reliably provides rewards that match the engrams you give him.

•Quests provide meaningful story progression, and clearly trackable paths through all the game's content, thereby lessening the grind.

•The Crucible has improved matchmaking, and a mercy rule ends matches early when any given contest is dramatically misbalanced.

•Crucible heavy and special ammo drops and economies have been reworked to be more understandable and useable.

• Weapons have been balanced across the board, with the aim to eliminate the dominance of just a few weapons, and make every weapon type a compelling choice.

• Whether your gauge is number of Crucible maps, exotic weapons, or playable mission, Destiny now has more than twice as much content as the original release. While Taken King introduces the first fully explorable new gameplay area, the new story mission zones, raids, and arena add substantial real estate to uncover.

Player UI/UX
Intelligence, Discipline, and Strength abilities now have numbered tiers to strive toward. Tiers are digital thresholds that you cross to reduce the cool down on your core three powers. Instead of a percentage, we want to tell you the time in secnds that your ability is going to come back in.

Music
Newly composed music was made for the early story missions.

Gear (Ghost Shell Hype!)
Weapons, armor, class items, and even your Ghost shell all offer perk customization as well as increased power and light for your hero.

Gunsmith and Armsday
•The Gunsmith has his own reputation meter.

•You can test weapons by borrowing them.

• Hit a certain reputation level and he will open Armsday purchase. You can pay glimmer once a week to order a new legendary weapon. W/ random sets of perks.

Shit, this all sounds pretty good. I'll keep expectations in check tho, but maybe I'll jump in, day one now, hah.

Yeah that sounds like it makes sense to me. So I'd install it on the JPN ID side then I guess and would I uninstall the previously installed copy of Destiny?

Only played Destiny's demo for a couple of hours, enjoyed it.

Sounds like it reached Reaper of Souls-levels of improvement? Might take a look in the coming month...

"Details about Exotic Weapons -- auto rifle that shoots chain lightning, sniper rifle that blinds enemies on a headshot, pulse rifle that reloads magazine when you land precision shots, fusion rifle that counts as a heavy weapon and acts as a portable rail gun"

Am I reading this right? A sniper rifle that blinds.. with a headshot? Does a headshot not kill them? Shouldn't a headshot with a sniper kill them?

It's a PvE sniper.

I think it's less about whats installed and more about what PSN account you have signed in when you load up the game.

I like the DGAF community, but since I'm on PS3 I haven't found any players here. :(

If you haven't tried them, I've found great success with:

1) the100.io - sort of a clan-style service that groups you up with other people based on time that you typically play. You can schedule games ahead of time or do the pick-up game thing. This has honestly revolutionized the way I play Destiny; I can schedule a raid and have a group of 5 signed up and ready to go, plus the people I've found there tend to be older and less "fuk u need gally 365 noob scrub" jerkfaces.

2) destinylfg.net - perfect for pick-up games, since it sorts by time posted. You can either post and have people join you, or just scan for a person, message them, and jump in. The population here is a mixed bag, but it replicates a real-ass LFG in-game pretty well.

3) destiny fireteams subreddit - honestly, the Destiny reddit community is pretty great. There's also at least two different Sherpa subreddits devoted to teaching new players about raids and endgame content that is specifically not bullshit cheese tactics.

The above are for all platforms. Honestly, I've been using the above for maybe 3-4 weeks and now I absolutely love raiding and doing all sorts of endgame content. It doesn't replace in-game LFG and yes, it's shit that needs to be in there. That said, the above (accessible on desktop or phone) is perfect for my needs.

Seems Bungie is aiming to get new players or returning players back. I'm still playing it almost daily and i don't know how i feel about this. Seems like i did an awful lot of grinding for nothing.

I sincerely hope being level 34 in the current game does not only means we get a 2 hour head start for leveling compared to new or returning players.

It will blind nearby enemies. It will obviously kill the person that is shot. (Unless he has The Ram lol)

So I guess I have a decision to make. I can return my sealed vanilla copy for a $20 refund, but what version to purchase? If I go PS4, the CE looks nice, but without my GCU discount, it is $32 more than the regular TK edition. I don't know if a steelbook is worth that.

Is Destiny a co-op game, or can it be played solo?

The only content in the game that you absolutely have to have other people with you is the raids (of which there are 2, soon to be 3).

The entire rest of the game can be played solo, but still requires an online connection.

That just stinks of "we don't want Marty to keep getting money".

I doubt he gets royalties on something he was paid to create.

All the changes sound really great but not enough for me to really jump back in even though I have the digital version. I stopped playing in October after putting over 100 hours on two guardians. Just not sure if I want to give them anymore money honestly and with MGS V right around the corner as well as other games. I will wait and see it is worth it but those changes to make exotics standout more sounds great though.
