Destiny Reveal Thread

Geff Gerstmann says the next-generation game is separate with no cross generation-play, higher player counts etc.
It's Jeff, but you would have to be crazy to think that. It would essentially involve making two different games.

Graphics looked mighty impressive to me, but I fear that the 360/PS3 versions will be seriously gimped in terms of player count (and that it may in turn gimp the next-gen versions).

Looks really, really great. The only problem is...i don´t know what kind of game it is on a big scale. I know you shoot stuff, so we got Bungie´s 30 seconds of fun! But the rest? Is it like Borderlands? Anyway, looks awesome :)

That goes to show how much you know. How about you actually look up the 10 year plan for Planetside 2. They're going way beyond just skirmish matches.

Bungie clearly wasn't ready for a reveal.

You argue now agaisnt something with the point of a future 10 year plan? Wat.

Comparing Planetside 2 to Destiny is also somehow seemingly stupid for now, and yes wow a finished PC game looks better than a WIP console game which never stated to have such high player numbers..

just saw it. what did i saw? not much. but ok. sounds cool...

so, the most exciting thing out of this "reveal" is a probably fake xbox logo....?

Wait, is that a Trophy Icon?...

Geoff K is answering Q's on stuff on Twitter at the moment. I asked about whether they mentioned cross-platform stuff:

do you know if there'll be any cross-platform play? The universe suggests it might be possible?

Geoff Keighley
@winstano That's a good Q, they didn't answer it. Definitely iPhone/console links. Not sure about xbox/playstation cross platform

So there's that. I reckon there'll be a Battlelog/Autolog equivalent, with stats forming the universe but not actually having cross platform play.

Not necessarily. It could just mean that the servers are different, and the next-gen versions support higher player counts. Along with a PC version.

Seems to be instanced dungeon crawler with possible hubs. FPS instead of 3rd person.

I was pretty excited for this but now i just don't know. MMOs are almost all garbage and the only good ones came out 10+ years ago. Bungie is promising the exact same thing every single new-age MMO developer has been promising and failing to pull off for years and years.

This really isn't what I was expecting at all. Good luck, Bungie.

Science and magic is what stuff like Shadowrun or Star Wars so awesome. I'm not saying it's great every time but it can be when done right.

Seriously. It's just a completely nonsensical defense of anything. Of course visuals are going to be important to people... you're staring at them for the entire length of the game! Some people have different bars for what they'll accept, but most people do indeed have some standard for which they recognize that graphics are an important part of the gaming package.

And particularly in a reveal when we have almost nothing to talk about except some sparse details AND the visuals, it even makes less sense. We're not playing the game yet, so of course the discussion of visuals becomes even MORE dominant then!

Actually the entire video they were talking about their ideas and ambitions. On the IGN stream they said that the point of this was to reveal the setting and the universe, not the game. Bungie should probably have mentioned this beforehand though.

Some people here have to stop treating this reveal as the second coming. I it was underwhelming and a good lesson for Sony to take for Wed in showing some ACTUAL gameplay.

It was a crap reveal, plain and simple.

People want stuff shown to them, not told.

what a horrible way of revealing a game. first they invite a bunch of journalists to fly to Seattle and they don't show them any game play footage. then they release a vidoc with more iPhone footage then actual game play footage.

I rather like the teaser reveal. Showed me some of the world and the concept behind the game. Just enough to get excited about the game and be pumped for E3.

Also, I think they are stuck waiting for MS and Sony to both unveil their new systems before they can really show off the full scope of the game.

hmmmmm....I think Geoff in his introduction is over stating seeing the game running after watching Jeff in his underpants talk about the experience at Bungie.

As for the unveiling itself....Underwhelming.

A lot of "this will be cool", but we aren't prepared to show anything concrete to back this up.

You have to question why today? I really don't see any reason to show this now. Lots of speculation, and what ifs. I could sense Jeff's frustration from the day visitin Bungie due to not actually being able to see the game. Even going as far to blur screens out on small monitors showing play testing stats.

Overall. Could be a cool premise Bungie. But I dunno.

I'm pretty sure the color saturation is just Bungie trying to show off their new dynamic lighting system and day/night cycle by setting the footage at sunset. All the articles I've read have mostly been Bungie flouting their new tech, so it makes sense that they would do the same with their footage. Beyond that, it's also just one planet, when we know they're doing at least Earth, the moon, Mars, and Venus. It would make sense for different worlds to have different hues and lighting to illustrate the different atmospheres.

My big question is - in Destiny are you only playing as human or can you also play as invader? Are there multiple factions?

I want to be in the alien hordes trying to bring down the city.

The City = Hub, Get together, the social aspect
Chapter '#" = Single Player
Bounty = Challenges (Weekly)
Strike = Competitive MP, Random Hopper = Jump from Mode to Mode
Raid = Co-Op potion, looks like anyone can join
Faction Wars = Competitive + Co-Op scenario, just like Strike, but you will be tied to your allegiance, and winners get the bounty, give strength/rewards to their Faction (Think MAG pr FFXI in Signet format), Random hopper = Jump from Mode to Mode

Looks like 6 People = Team

So Destiny is a fucking Red Mage, Trade of All Jacks, Not the best in one category over another, yet not worst in category than another

That's about what I was thinking as well. And the "lobby" is you and your friends starships just cruising around?

We need more. Bungie is in the awkward position of making/announcing a huge project for current gen that will also be out for next gen...while not being able to talk about next gen. They're (I believe) the first developer to fully reveal a cross gen game, so it'll be interesting to see how it all works out.

Yeah, the art style rarely is going to change what a fps looks or plays like

God Jeff, put some pants on for a change.

With the YouTube video being titled "Pathways Out of Darkness", for a minute there I thought that we were going to see another Pathways into Darkness game!

not as much in that vidoc as i was hoping for the big unveiling. some of the world design looked nice (big floating planet above land reminds me of ffxiii) but mostly i'm waiting to hear more.

Graphics looked mighty impressive to me, but I fear that the 360/PS3 versions will be seriously gimped in terms of player count (and that it may in turn gimp the next-gen versions).

The shots overlooking the city looked quite impressive, not so much the rest of the in-game stuff.

If planetside comes to the ps4 then this game will instantly look underwhelming. Which is very possible as Planetside is a Sony franchise I believe.

Planetside is completely Sony and if they can get it running for the PS4 with cross platform play against PC, this game will have immediate competition.

Add to that Planetside 2 is F2P.

I am just not sure about this always online, MMO aspect. Would rather have a separate, epic open world single player, with a huge multiplayer component on the side. Trying to force all of this together, with having to always be online could ultimately spell disaster. It's a tall order and it will be interesting indeed to see if they can pull it off without lots of problems.
