Destiny - Review Thread

Where are the reviews? Outlets are not actually waiting for feature implementation are they? Or is it a case of putting up Friday content that gets hits over the weekend?

OK, I have to admit, the more I play, the more I like it. Yes, ADS still bothers me (although, for some reason, it doesn't bother me in Destiny nearly as much as in most games) the accuracy penalty when airborne is still annoying, the story is pretty much non-existent, the level design is bad (for the most part) the combat scenarios are not as dynamic as I would like, and the PvP is still garbage. But even with all those flaws, I'm having a lot of fun with the game.

Some things I really like about the game.

-The sense of progression feels great. Not too fast, not too slow. Just right.

-The sense of exploration is amazing. I was walking through Mars at night (that skybox, OMG) and I felt so immersed in the game world... pretty awesome.

-I fucking love the hand cannon. It feels so good. It also feels the closest to Halo, which is great.

People surprised at the lack of content of Destiny fail to realize that Bungie has always been a failure at game development and always compromise there games quality, look at Halo CE and Halo 2.

But those games didn't feel lacking. Halo 2 was a mess story-wise, dropped the ball with the cliffhanger, and pulled back big time on the scope they wanted to take Earth and the Mombasa level particularly, but never once did lack of content come across my mind. In fact, in some ways I wish some of those levels were trimmed up a bit. CE was much tighter and again wasn't lacking. Especially for its time and a console game.

Edit: I wasn't on the up-and-up on Halo's development with CE, though admittedly I wasn't on Destiny either until seeing what was being brought up here.

Apparently, it's not a "racial" thing, it's a cultural one. Earthborn vs. Reef dwellers. The Queen isn't the Queen of all Awoken, just the ones living in the Reef.

That does seem plausible (and I kinda did get that vibe), so I can at least live with that explanation. I just wish there was more clues to that (maybe it's in the Grimoire?). I still wish there was some acknowledgement (like the Awoken in the Reef intentionally talking me down because I was Earthborn alone with more references to the Reef Awoken rather than Awoken as a race in general leading to the conclusion that all Awoken are generally in the Reef).

It does feel half to me that their games can be big blockbusters that just aren't the kind of thing I really, REALLY like, and half that they're good but flawed developers. I wonder what would have ultimately become of them had it not been for Halo?

Hell had it not been for the tacked on multiplayer at the end of CE's development Halo probably would not even be around anymore. They even wanted to make Halo 2 a BTB only game and if it wasn't for Max Hoberman that would have came into fruition and killed Halo 2 as well. Halo: Reach was a terrible game that destroyed the Halo cannon and MP was the worst in the franchise for all the mechanics they introduced into the series. They obviously are oblivious to what actually makes their games good.

They're holed up with Activision counting their money. i expect word saying they've sold X million copies on either Friday or Monday. Then some kind of info-graphic with useless stats like "X hive killed" "X orbs of light generated"

I'd love a meaningful response about complaints about the amount of content and AI but I don't expect to get one.

Haha what is up with the useless statistics thing...I could totally see them doing that!

That's kind of the thing though (and for the record, I agree with the guy on Halo 2), it was clear they spent too much time reworking most of the opening levels (they actually say so in the documentary/making of included in the LE) and ran out of time to finish the story and to make better levels down the line. So while it's probably caused by either mismanagement or too much ambition/not enough resources, it does end up being an issue of the game being lacking. Lacking in focus and/or quality delivery, not just content (i.e. number of levels, length of levels).

This I can agree with. In my eyes they have not been able to replicate the epic fun that is the Halo CE campaign.

Oops double post. Sorry guys.

I was more talking about how the multiplayer was in CE was tacked on last minute and become far more of a success than Bungie ever intended. Halo 2 on the other hand had developmental hell, just watch the behind the scenes of Halo 2's development, they cut out so much and even the original multiplayer pre patch was terrible.

You will NOT speak ill of Halo CE while I still draw breath.

Not speaking ill of Halo CE it was a masterpiece but as I said in my other post they got lucky with the multiplayer and honestly thats what has carried the Halo franchise to the status it has (or once had depending how you feel about it now)

Yeah, it's in the Grimoire. Had to look it up on the wiki since I don't have an Awoken character.

And you're absolutely right that they should have made that clear. It's kind of bizarre, how many of Destiny's story missteps are typical of games trying to scrimp and save. Overuse of a single VA, an intense reluctance to do any sort of noncombat character animations, failing to account for player choices customization.

Yup. As said, I agree with you on this.

I just went and took a look at the grimoire cards on their website and I'm baffled at how they thought it was a good idea to not include the lore in game. Until I read about it online, I had no idea what the grimoire cards are, I think they don't even take the time to explain what they are in the game. I knew I was unlocking them left and right, but I didn't know what they were. It seems like stuff that should have been scattered around the world or stuff that should have been incorporated into the game through detail.

Call of Duty ends up having the better narrative than a Bungie game?

The Grimoire section on The Darkness is pretty interesting actually. Its a series of theories from around the universe, my favorite being something similar to Mr.Shadow from The Fifth Element :)

Again, I had to read this buried on the game's website/app

...way to go Bungie

The grimoire thing is some of the biggest bullshit there is. Something that should be readable from in game when you collect them you have to go log onto a website.

Yes, massively so. Doesn't come close to live up to goals that bungie themselves set for the game, and it's just full of mindboggling design decisions
I don't know if I can ever get over how completely antisocial it is really. Granted I wouldn't seriously expect mic use in the city hub, but not keyboard or at least compiling premade phrases akin to some games out there if policies make keyboard chat problematic? It's like the game equivalent of someone who WANTS to socialize with other people but is too scared to actually do so and just sort of hangs out in a popular gathering spot.

Oh.

My.

God.

Destiny is the awkward gaming nerd of MMOs.

Ok, that's a bit clearer to me then. It really has been too long since I do now remember the state of Halo 2's multiplayer pre-patch.

The "get more info at bungie.net" didn't tip you off at all?

Most people don't even finish games let alone read the lore. Now you can read it on the toilet. What's the problem here?

I'm pretty sure it's easy to infer at least why there are Aliens on Earth given how Humans are forced to live under one city, as well as what a Guardian is.
Is it easy? Why are there aliens on earth? Why are there robots on earth? Is it cause the big evil took their worlds? Then what's the reef? Why is the moon far away now? What would anyone even want the moon for? What would giving up the moon even do? Why are there temples in the moon? Wouldn't that screw up the earth being gone? Why is everyone going to Russia? Why is Russia a mad max wasteland? Is it cause of climate change with the moon disappearing and earth's axis changing? Why isnt night super dark then?

Humans only live in one city? Why? What makes the city safe? How many people live in the city? How can it hold the population of multiple species? What is a guardian? Why are they chosen? How are they chosen? How does the player come back to the life in the beginning? Why does the player character act like they dont know anything even when they're an alien? What is a fallen?

Maybe I need to be spoonfed. Maybe I need to infer more. Or maybe the writing is just bad all around.

Do you even infer bro?

Your analysis reminds me of this (^____^)

I thought they were some kind of medal or something that you were supposed to collect. They could have at least specified that it was story related. I seriously doubt many people even know what "grimoire cards" are. Besides all of that though, they should have been in game.

Nobody's objecting to being able to access the Grimoire away from the game, they're objecting to not being able to check it out in the game.

So uhh... the consensus is that this game is disappointing?

It's average and the combat is pretty bland. From all the time they spent hyping it up, they should have used that money to actually make the combat better. I'm not even frightened or challenged by the enemies, its just "oh he does more damage".

"I could tell you my name, or why you're doing the things you're called upon to do, or how exactly we got to this point - I could tell you of the prophecies and legends that foretell the dangers you face, and I could even try to explain why you need to use an external app or website rather than experiencing this world's lore and backstory in-game, but I don't even have the time to tell you why I don't have the time to tell you those things. So go forth, Guardian of Light and fight the darkness, because darkness is bad, and legends shoot things in the face for loot. Oh and collect 60 Spinmetal while you're at it, we're running a little low. K thanks."

LOL!

I'm having a lot of fun playing it with friends, but it has some major flaws that I wasn't expecting. The story is laughably awful and the loot system needs some serious overhauling. Content amount is a significant issue as well. At the same time, the gunplay feels fantastic and going on strikes with a friend or two is a blast.

Uneven experience overall that is somewhat underwhelming for a lot of people.
