Destiny: the taken kings new approach to story telling

I've decided I want to buy this. But I want the extra emotes. I already own all of the previous expansions and have zero desire to buy them again. I also want to stick with digital purchase.

What's the best option for me?

The Taken King - $40

Emotes and stuff - $20

Why do Destiny fans act like this is a strange occurence? People do this all of the time with games they don't like. Now you can say you don't understand the concept of complaining about something you dont like when it's brought up but I think that's probably bullshit.
It's a strange occure cue when you can't make a destiny thread in gaming without it devolving into the same tiring complaints (most of which were alleviated with the game months ago). It's always a vocal minority complaining about a game that they haven't played since launch or never played to begin with and that doesn't lead to anything constructive. At that point it's just people complaining to complain about a game they likely never intended to play again/ever. That's weird. I don't go into nba 2k threads to write essays on why I think the game is stupid, is punishing it's players with yearly releases that barely improve anything, etc. because I truly have no interest in the game. You really think the majority of the people complaining are even going to think about destiny tomorrow, let alone when it meets their ridiculous standards (that again have already likely been met)?

I'm ready to jump back in after giving up at about level 13 or so in vanilla. Should I wait for Taken Kings to start over or get the DLC and start now? Not sure what the difference in experience will be for starting a new campaign.

same tired terrible (but still hilarious) assertions. If y'all hate this game so much why do you waste your time coming into a thread to talk about how you hate it. Maybe community should have a destiny hate ot.

I'm...not? I really want to like Destiny, but after beating the story and discovering that "endgame" was remixed leveling dungeons, I was crestfallen. Bungie billed Destiny as this huge epic space opera, and we go to a grand total of...4 planets at launch? (And one of them is the moon...) Had the endgame content been a second set of planets with all new post-story content, and new flashpoints with the random modifiers that are currently rotated through the story content, all building up to the raid, I would still be putting hours into Destiny. I'm not just bashing Destiny to troll everyone, and this isn't an OT; I'd NEVER be discussing this in there. It's an article discussing the new approach to storytelling, and I'm not driveby shitposting, I'm discussing why I find these claims dubious at best.

You can buy the emotes and stuff separately? 20 seems rather pricey for a new animation. >.<

What else would you get with it?

I saw your post on the other page. I think buying the collector edition for $80 digitally or physically would be your best bet if you do not have the base game.

I'm picking up the emotes because I want them and I support the game and all but I think you can also hold off on buying the emotes if you wanted to see them in case you changed your mind. Then just buying the other version would be best.

I have everything up to this point, I really want to avoid re-buying it again.

I think I'll likely go with the digital version of TTK and skip the emotes. Twenty bucks is too steep for what you seemingly get in return, IMO.

I could have sworn Luke Smith said they were going to address that for people like myself, who felt like they were being gouged for the emotes.

Yea I say hold off. If you really want them you can probably wait until Black Friday when there are some PSN card deals and snag a $20 one for like $10 or even for free with the purchase of a game.

thats good and well except the fact where you stated "I'm convinced the people who still try to argue for its quality a year later have some advanced form of Stockholm syndrome." saying shit like that (which comes up in every destiny thread by the way) completely invalidates any legitamate points you could've made. Why should we care what you have to say when you think we're mental? Sorry but what you did was shit posting.

Do I really need to add a disclaimer after such an obviously facetious line in a post? I'll gladly go back and remove it, and state here, that I do not, in fact, believe Destiny fans are mentally ill.

It's literally such a common thing said in destiny threads that yes you probably should. People will take your statement seriously and then completely ignore everything else you said.

This thread in particular is about story and I know for a fact that complaint hasn't been resolved. And it probably won't be.

What would be constructive to you here? People trying to think of ways that Bungle can fix their story for them? Here's a thought, write characters instead of weird loading screen exposition dumps that don't really make sense because of the weird language used and the expectation that we understand what you're talking about as if this stuff is common knowledge. The darkness is not a character. Crota is not a character. The speaker is not a character and neither is ghost. They are just things. Do you want people saying they believe in Bungie now in that they will tell a compelling narrative? Is it really hard to believe that people don't believe in Bungle?

No, it's not weird at all to complain about something when it's brought up. NBA 2k is something you're indifferen about. What does that have to do with anything? The people complaining either like the game on some level and wish it was better or loathe the game enough to say why it's bad. That is a whole lot different than indifference. Case in point, the MGS thread that keeps showing up on the front page full of complaints about its narrative. It happens all of the time here with all kinds of games that you'd have to willingly ignore it. Your favourite game is not special in this regard.

Done. This is actually my first post in a Destinty thread on GAF, so I wasn't aware the joke had been made before. In any case, it's gone now.

Are people upset that other people like a game that they do not enjoy?

Yep. People are like that all the time on here. It's the "I don't like so no one else should like it!" thinking. It boils down to, they are jealous someone else is having fun with a game they think its cool to hate on because the Internet says so. And they want to try fitting in with the "cool" internet crowd that hates popular games.

Hey man

Destiny haters are more than justified which is why i dont go out of my way to challenge them

Vanilla Destiny... was basically having players bankroll development until they could build upon and flesh out the the solid skeleton they created.

That said Taken King seems to be the turning point and they reached it faster than I expected them too.

Should be a solid experience from year 2 going forward and this is just based on me catching up from Vanilla to the current expansions

It's having the opposite effect on me.

I'm tentatively interested, because I like so much of Bungies past work, but overall I am with you.

I've just been burned on the game too many times. I feel like Bungie will say all of the right things, but in the end Bungie will (for example) fix light levels but introduce some new grind that's just as bad or even worse.

The best thing for the game, IMO would be a Diablo 3 loot 2.0 system, but Destiny has never had the diversity in base guns/armor and perks to make that make sense, so instead we ended up with loot scarcity.

Definitely waiting for reviews on this one.

Uhh i would argue the current system is far more compelling than Diablos system

Diablo loot is BOOORRRING

Apart from Metal Gear 4 people just seem perfectly willing to just attack this game.

A lot of the time with very skewed or outdated views on how it actually works.

They often then use the following

the grind too much - it's gone

raid matchmaking - WOULDN'T WORK TRUST US, WE WOULDN'T LIE

But the option to do it, Trust me here six random people needing to be free and stay positive through upwards of 3 hours of failure per section,
people would quit. That would even greater damage what should be and is the best part of destiny

Lack of content - All of the DLC's had a lot of cool new features and stuff to do.

We love our game and yes it may have burned you but it's changed, if it was still the same old POS it was at launch
I'm sure that more of us would have left and would be on your side, when the taken king comes out,
you'll see amazing review scores and a destiny more inline with the original vision that due to awkwardness in it's final development was sadly lost/put on the back burner,
that's why although it's a heft $60 if new or $40 if you own the DLC with the magnitude of change within it, it's certainly worth a second chance.

Right now.

Right now?

Destiny Physical Legendary Edition.
Just search it.

September 15

Legendary Edition ($60):
Based game
Year 1 expansions
Taken King expansion

No digital edition at the moment though.

thanks. i prefer physical, so thats all good.. further related question: now that we're at "Legendary edition" status of this game, does that mean that big DLC for this game is done? I don't really want to buy a $60 game, get into it, and then have there be multiple more $30 expansions before Destiny 2.

It should be noted that the Legendary Edition comes with digital codes for the expansions

At least thats what I am hearing

I don't have any insider info or anything like that, but I'm damn near positive there's no way in hell TTK is the last thing that comes out costing money before "Destiny 2"

The leaked roadmap showed 2 more DLC releases for year 2 didnt it?

Destiny 2 better be massive and drop cross gen support

Thats all I gotta say lol

There has been nothing announced so far,not even a new season pass, so we are literally in the dark
ness

ah, okay. if there's more content coming i'll just wait for the Ultimate Legendary XL Edition in two years or whatever.

Destiny is supposed to be a 10 year franchise. You're going to be waiting 8 or 9 years now if you want to buy once all content is done.

I would highly recommend Doing TTK

Finish it and take a year off

Then come back

Destiny is a game better experienced in large chunks

Picked Destiny up at launch and being that I was a huge Halo fan I expected to absolutely love it. I was a bit more than disappointed. Not willing to spend another dime on it. Maybe the sequels can reel me back in if they fix everything.

If you don't enjoy the game then definitely don't spend any more money on it, there are tons of great games out there you might enjoy more. But the expansion and leveling thing is just par for the course with an MMO-like game such as Destiny, it's going to keep happening.

You could take some time away and then try it again in the future with some "comprehensive edition" of all expansions, similar to the Taken King + vanilla + DLC 1 and 2 you can get now. Much cheaper than buying everything along the way, and people who start playing now will be in a much better place than vanilla Destiny which admittedly had a lot of problems to iron out.
My issues with the game isnt as much its grinding problems but the complete lack of content.
If a game that was in development for so many years comes out giving hardly 4 explorable areas and 4 cutscenes for the 60 euros you paid, and then barelly give anything for two extra pieces of 20 euros dlc, i cant help but feel scammed.

Not getting the expansion now is personal, and not getting it for another year is the only way to break even and justify it's price.

I was hooked from alpha until about 3 or 4 weeks after Prison of Elders came out. I quickly had 3 34s and every exotic, and the only motivation to spam PoE weekly was different burns on main weapons which couldn't even compare to my light-upgraded legendaries. The whole thing got old to me real fast, and 4 or 5 of us just dropped it all of a sudden in the same week. That being said I'm a dumb shit and will probably pick up TTK, but I have 0 motivation to play it until then, and I don't think Fallout 4 & Battlefront quickly approaching is going to help me much either. Really hoping Destiny 2 is very different, as in a completely different open-world-feeling foundation different.

I hope they have space battles... NO I want more

I want ships to be just as equipable as a guardian. Basically more loot and 2 games in one

There's quite a bit of talk about 'Destiny 2' and if 'Destiny 2' does this or that, folks will consider coming back.

Just a heads up... this is Destiny 2. The 2.0 update is The Taken King. Hope to see you there.

If not, that's okay too. Lots of great games coming this autumn.

Anyone? Any reason to wait to TTK to jump back in? I don't level very fast (limited play time).

This isn't Destiny 2.

Version 2.0 of Destiny 1

I'm not buying anything Bungie makes at launch ever again.

I traded my game for my friend's PS3 version of Dishonoured. Once in a while I wonder if I made a mistake, but that thought doesn't linger in my head.

Man, Destiny was fun while I was dumb and new to it.

Nah man, Destiny 2 will be an actual stand alone game with an overhauled engine and dropping last gen support.

This is just version 2.0 of Destiny
