Destructoid: PS4 controller prototype & devkit photo, [Up: New Photo/Info In OP]

Yeah, thats the thing with controllers. It's hard to get 1 controller that EVERYONE loves. Everyone has some sort of preference. For instance, I like the looseness of the sticks and dislike the resistance of the 360 one. Its opposite for other people. I'm willing to sacrifice some stuff if it means more people enjoy using the controller.

Btw, Dualshock 3 fans, question:

Do you hope that R1 is still used as the "shoot" button rather than R2 if R2 is turned into "triggers". R1 is just so much more comfortable to use for me personally. But I fear they will change it to be more inline with the xbox unfortunately.

I want ps2 controls back. Especially when it comes to my GTA games. I was okay with press X to drive and all of that other jazz.

I thought the face buttons were only pressure sensitive on PS2 (causing me major headaches in MGS2-3), are you sure PS3's were too?

They also have a pressure sensitive dpad. The loss of analog buttons is very disappointing, MGS and Ace Combat made great use of them.

Right, and? I'm just saying that Sony adapted their controller to be like the 360's in ways because the 360's was better in some areas. I hope Microsoft does the same for their next console, the d-pad for instance.

Oh boy.

If you're saying right, I don't know why you said people are afraid of any kind of change before.

So it's the Fumblesticks 3 with a screen on it? Was hoping for something all new or either a straight up rip off of the magnificent 360 controller+ improved d-pad.

It's not at all though. It's bigger, the triggers are fixed, the d-pad is better, and the sticks are a concave/convex hybrid type of deal.

If you're saying right, I don't know why you said people are afraid of any kind of change before.

I said "people like you" (not you, I was talking to the other guy), not everyone.

Right. The sticks are redone from the Dualshock. The triggers were redone because they were garbage on the DS3. The problem is that people like you are afraid of any kind of change what so ever, and think that a controller's design should be sacred.

Didn't really use L2 and R2 really. Frankly, I came to really enjoy both L1 and R1 for any shooting, hope they come back in that way.

Loyalty at it's finest.

I would definitely prefer to keep the R1 for shooting.

But honestly a better option would be to:

1. Allow all games to allow you the gamer to choose.
1a. A profile setting would be nice. Set up your favorite FPS/TPS controller settings and have each game search/load that profile.

That would be also nice for character customization. I always make my rpg characters look like me, Why do I have to create a new one each time? Load my custom character profile preference, I can make adjustments later.

of course L1/R1 was more comfortable to use that L2/R2 on the DS3. L2/R2 was an afterthought for that controller. They just slapped it in and said fuck it...

when this new controller comes out, i bet it will be more natural to rest your hands on the triggers than the front shoulder buttons because it will be designed in that nature the same way the DS series was designed with L1/R1 as being primary shoulder buttons

Please god, no R2 to shoot. I don't care how good the trigger is. R1 for life!

I agree, I want to stick with R1 and L1.

If developers are smart then that'd be a secondary option, but I honestly can't go back to anything without triggers. I will say no matter what I'm happy because anything is a step up from the L2/R2 on the PS3. I've been playing Saints Row 2 and I was disappointed that there's no L1/R1 option like in SR3.

Every game should come with user customisable controls

OMG. An option at the system level to switch

R1->R2
and
L1->L2

would be fucking AMAZING. Omg, Sony, do it please, for the Love of God. I don't trust developers to do it in their games.

Are you saying they should make L2/R2 primary? That sounds the wrong way round to me. They just need to make the L2/R2 more comfortable to use with your middle finger and make the controller better to hold when all your fingers are there. R1 for shoot is better than moving your finger up and down.

I'd ask if you were trolling or being serious but I think we all know the answer to that.

Neither

I am so shocked people still would prefer L1 or R1 or whatever to be used to shoot. I don't know in my head the way a "trigger" button is shaped just makes the most sense for what it is being used for.

I do hope devs offer both layouts (R1/L1 to aim/shoot) or R2/L2 if they have indeed been improved. I personally would use L1/R1.

And I hope that controller in the OP is an older pic and the controller is more in line with Sony's dualshock controllers in the end.

I don't like the analog placement and I wish they would just go for a placement like the 360. The ridges on the analog pads may work great though.

The touchpad seems absolutely unnecessary and a stupid gimmick. Does anyone have a good use for it? I am interested in hearing ideas for it as I have a hard time of thinking about many.

L1 and R1 fit the end digit of my index finger perfectly. I really have come to like the current controls.

It's on or off. You can fire quicker with a regular button. R2 on the DS3 is just awkward to use.

Wouldn't that be a problem if LR1 are digital and LR2 aren't?

He meant that it would be great as a system-level option and not an in-game option. This way, the user doesn't have to rely on the game offering the swap of the L/R1's and L/R2's. The user could just choose to change it him/herself.

And, yeah, it could be a problem in some games where pressure is necessary, but they seem to be talking about FPS's specifically. In this case, twitch shooting is easier/quicker with a binary digital L1/R1 than fully depressing a trigger.

Trust me sir, you're not the only one disgusted by these tactics. Rising above the clear corporate machine is something we as gamers must do. Onward we must push in order to secure a place where we as gamers are no longer taken advantage of. Look, I know some of you fine folk are okay with blatant plagiarism in the industry. Let us reject in this instance though the clear shenanigans and gimmickery this controller represents. I know I won't be there day 1 for PS4's launch. Nor will I be there for day 2 of PS4's launch. Gone are the days where honor was a concept that pervaded the Japanese gaming industry.

Yeah, I knew what he meant but I could still see that running into problems. Regardless, it would be great if all buttons could be swapped to different places if the game doesn't call for pressure sensitive stuff.

I'm not 100% fond of it but I can imagine it being useful for web browsing while pausing mid-game, looking up a FAQ in a browser, and so on. Other than that, I'm not sure how it would complement gaming because I can only see myself using my two thumbs to touch the area if necessary (otherwise I would have to take one hand off). It seems more useful on the system side.

I am definitely just not used to the DS3 enough for this to make sense in my head. I am going to borrow a couple of FPS games for PS3 and come back in a week to let you know if I think you are crazy or not :P

You can say the same for a 360 controller though. Just imagine pressing the bumpers to aim/fire instead of the triggers. The bumpers only require a short press to fully activate; it's all or nothing. The triggers require you to fully depress the button all the way down until it aim/fires. Same thing with the PS3 controller... except the PS3 triggers are mushier.

No, that wouldn't work. The 360's bumpers are too small in comparison to LR1.
