Detachable HD on PS3

I didn't notice until now that the PS3 is going to use a regular PC mains cable. Does this mean the power consumption is significantly higher than the PS3? Maybe a magnitude higher? I seem to remember the PS1 was about 5 watts and the PS2 was 50 watts. Are we talking 500 watts for the PS3?

Hence the problem we currently have with computers
 
Jonny : I guess so... since modern graphicscards need extrapower these days, and the PS3 is built around it...

but really, the only difference is in the cable. There is no groundpin on the old PS2 / PS1, which is on this PC-connector.
Its still the same 110V / 220V that goes into the console no matter what power it wants.
 
I hope the PS3 can accept HDs through the USB2.0 port... HD caddies are pretty cheap and easy/portable storage at a low cost...
 
I actually noticed this as I was looking at the PS3, but I figured someone had seen this before and pointed it out. It sure does look like a good spot for the HDD.

Also, on the way out of the PS3 theater they had a plasma screen showing pictures of the system and one of them had the door to the left of the slot drive open. Inside were the SD/Compact Flash/Mem. Stick slots. Don't know if anyone's picked that out yet.

In function or form? In form it's much further I'd say, even with the RSX... which is superficially similar but architechturally very different.

Functionally, it's not suprising as the PC has become really, the ultimate convergence machine. It's only real problem is that it's not standardized, it mainly uses windows and it can be difficult to use for most people. The PS3 and beyond is looking to dethrone the PC and popularize the idea of a high powered convergence CE machine.
 
They listed the 2.5" bay on the spec sheet, already known, though nice pic.

The change in power cords doesn't mean higher power consumption, just that Sony is going with a grounded cable (which they should have last gen in my opinion). Power consumption will be much higher however. PS1 and PS2 were both pretty low power consumption systems, PS3 will probably take quite a bit (at least twice the PS2) more I'd think.
 
if PS3 doesn't have a HD standard (detachable or not), that that would be a major flaw in its design, imo. It'll be like the PS2 all over again. Hopefully the 360 is forcing their hand in this matter.

Also, the PS3 is one huge mutha!
 
The PS3 looks ugly in that shot.

(and the controller in the background doesn't help either :lol )

Much like PSP, Black/White PS3 looks amazingly good and expensive in real life. Much more so than Xbox 360, I might say (didnt' have a chance to see Revolution so no comments there). Those promo shots just don't do it justice. It's also didn't look huge. It seemed just a bit bigger (if any) than the old PS2.

Whether they include HDD or not, I just hope it accepts any 2.5" HDD that you can put the media on, and that it's seemlessly supported in the user interface. That way you wouldn't be limited to any custom made small size HDD.

Agreed. In person the PS3 is rather stunning - a testatment to Sony's design experience - and a step beyond X360's cluttered appearance. It appears roughly the same size as the old PS2. The convex design and the inability to stack anything on top of the console appears to be a heat dissipation measure.

Waffle iron and tanning bed jokes aside, Sony appears to have nailed the minimalist design approach they were going for. In so doing, PS3 "looks" more sophisticated than X360.

Considering the HDD is not mandatory for gaming purposes (you need it just for storing multimedia content I assume) and considering PS3 "open" design in that it accepts non-Sony storage media (CF, SD), I suspect it's gonna accept any 2.5" HDD indeed. Actually, PS2 already does that doesn't it?
 
that controller looks uncomfortable....i reallly hope Sony redesigns that sucker to have triggers as well as buttons. it almost seems like your hands will be further apart when playing on the PS3.

in regards to bluetooth most of the devices i have with this feature has significant battery drain issues, hope that's not the case with PS3.

Yes i know it was on the specsheet, but all reports seemed to think that the hd was external, which i thought would be a major designflaw.

And talking about the design, i really like the black PS3. It looks hot to me, while the
Xbox360 doesnt do anything for me.. it looks like an old external hd actually.

I'm curious to know what devices you're referring... the only battery powered devices I've used are my PDA and my cell headset... my cell headset has awesome battery life... my PDA however even turning bluetooth on really affects the battery life... but it's still pretty solid, I'd expect a bluetooth controller to run somewhere between those two examples.

BTW am I the only person who didn't know the relative size of the PS3? Just found out... larger than a PS2, but smaller than the original Xbox.... which when you think about it is probably pretty obvious from looking at the pictures...

The same thing was being said about the ps2. This might be the right time for Sony to go after MS's main market, general computers, with this trojan horse.

I sense a bit of hyperbole in your question, ;) but no, I don't think the PS3 will need 500W's. For instance, take a typical Dell. They have much greater control over the mainboard specs, etc, thus they are able to get away with less 'wattage' than a typical home-brew rig. IOW, it's a more efficient design overall WRT power consumption.

The PS3 and 360 will both require a lot of wattage relative to current consoles, but I would think that 300-350 watts is the max for either.
