Diablo 3 Beta [Beta withdrawal underway!]

Not open for further replies.
Finished my first playthrough last night with a barb. Game feels perfect. I think I'm gonna slowly work my way through all the classes, just to get a feel for their skills and play styles.

I don't want to burn myself out on the beta though. I ended up playing significantly more of the SC2 Beta than I did of the retail game.

Got into the beta like 3 days ago. Funny thing was that I didn't believe the email at first because of all those fake ones I keep getting so I was like meh until I saw that it required me to log into Battle.net in order to get it and I was like "Ohhhh shiii-." Anyways been playing as the Witch Doctor and I really like the feel for him. His spells are pretty kick ass and I just need 1 more lvl for him to be 13. After that I'll definitely check out all the other characters. I will say though that the I tested out the Monk and I sort of can't get used to him. Maybe I need to level him more to get the better Active Skills.

Same reaction for me too lol, I was going to dismiss it till I saw the bit about battlenet.

Playing as Barb specifically the game feels great, I've tried out all the classes but Witch Doctor, and I feel like Barb and Monk feel best for me. Not digging the Demon Hunter and Wizard as much.

But this beta has made me pretty impressed at the core changes to the way the game plays, it's refreshing coming off of a decade of D2. However I feel like from what I've seen, the character building has lost all permanence, but that at least removes the sense of skill/stat allocation remorse I would always get. Though that makes me wonder, is there any point in making another character of the same class with the way D3 is set up? Stats allocate automatically and you gain the skills by hitting level checkpoints, not investing into them. Your only specialization are the skills you equip, which can be changed on a whim.

I feel the same way. It's a shame really because I enjoyed having multiple characters of the same type. Now I can change my character on a whim using any cool item that drops. Also when people find "über builds" they will instantly appear everywhere.

I wonder if this will hurt replay ability too.

That reminds me, does the game no longer have randomized level layouts? The level layouts seem to be exactly the same on each run.
They are randomized, just run the citadel several times and you will see. There are some bigger fixed set-pieces that we are not used to from d2, but this is such a small piece of the game so no conclusion can be made if that is the norm. The set-pieces might be bigger in the "tutorial" early game.

Guaranteed movement button
We just wanted to let you all know that this feedback that you have given on a dedicated click to move button is excellent, and we may implement this, the option for this would be unbound by default. Sadly, this option would not be ready for when the game is shipped. While it would not be ready for ship if we do end up implementing it, I hope that you are all glad to hear this news ^^

It's too late to add this option before it ships... that means the games are being produced/almost being produced! :OOO

D3 SOON!!

I did enjoy the stat stuff from D2 but I really only stuck with the same builds for various classes. Trying to make an unorthodox build was time consuming, especially in the lower levels plus so many skills were poor compared to other skills in the trees.

I guess Blizzard are trying to get people to make interesting builds with the Runestone abilities and not with stats. I am sure people will be able to Rune/Gem/Socket for various builds as well, so if they want a high crit build, they just need to find the gear for it.

Won't runestones give you a way to really experiment though? I'm hoping the classes wont get stale based on the runes alone, there's no telling what will and won't be viable at end game though at this point.
As for the monk, I have been playing plenty of him, and he reminds me of a paladin. I'm constantly putting up mantras to help out in a party situation, and there's some nice little pocket heals. I think he plays best this way and not as a main damage dealer per se. I also enjoy teleporting behind a group of mobs, roundhousing them all back towards my party where they get decimated. Good times.

Do runestones get destroyed when changed? Or removed? If you can just slot around at will.... There is no more bowazon and spearazons. Just one toon I can switch whenever. Which means less replayability.

There is one really great "feature" of the way Blizzard is handling skills and stats and builds this time around that, IMHO, will greatly encourage off the wall builds. Sure, making build changes easy as pie without having to reroll a char might make everyone run the same "maximized" build, but it will also allow people to play crazy and not so optimal builds just as easily. If you want to play that hydra/firewall wizard you won't have to roll a whole new char and play them from lvl 1 to 80 just to try it out and have fun with it. You can just reallocate your current max level wizard, go hunt for the gear to make it work, and have fun. And if you don't like it and want to go back to where you were, as long as you saved your gear its easy as a snap. Blizzard is taking away the barrier to playing strange and interesting builds, and to me that is awesome, and will most likely encourage creative builds, not encourage perfect builds.

We'll see how it actually plays out online though...

I agree 100%. I don't see the need to have multiple same classes when I can always look for one of 2.8 trillion builds that suits my play-style on a whim. This panel explains things a bit better.

I'm witholding judgement on this front until post-release.

I dunno, your argument is that they should artifically limit your character so you can have more replayability... Does that sound correct to you?

If you really want to, why not make talent and rune choices permanent. Make a new character for a new build. Tada! You honestly cant be complaining about the option to change specs....

I don't want to burn myself out on the beta though.
This is something I was worried about early on... but after 150+ hours of D3 beta, I just want to play this more.

So when do you guys think this game will be released?

When do you guys expect Blizzard to announce a release date?

We already have Q1 2012. I'm guessing they'll announce a more exact release date... in January? Maybe?

Anyway I just reinstalled Diablo 2 in preparation for this game. God help me, it still holds up. There's just some ineffable thing it has that puts it above Titan Quest or Torchlight, and this is coming from a guy who really liked both of those games. It might be as simple as the gore when the monsters die, but I think it's more like this extra layer of polish the other games just don't have. It's hard to describe.

Seriously! I am actually a little scared that I have played such a small part of the first act so many hours and have not burned out on it yet. What is going to happen when I have a full game with 4 difficulties? :O

Now, I find myself running different areas with my mf gear on (85%) and doing 46 dps when I could be doing 180... smh

Betas never burn me out. If anything, they have the opposite effect on me.

Blizzard betas, maybe. But I've played some real crappy betas for even crappier games in my life, and believe me, not all betas are a joy ride. The only beta I can remember that I may have enjoyed as much as a Blizzard beta was a game called Starfleet Command, maybe ten years ago now? That was a hugely fun beta. The game had an exceptionally active and supportive community who were willing to actually play and test everything in every way to make the game a better experience. And the game was fun. I still play it now and then.

This is the only Blizzard beta that I haven't played yet. D3 seems to want to make me wait, lol.

They can do as they like. I do think that there will be less excitement surrounding drops than in d2 for me. For example, if I found an awesome spear for a level 30 spearazon, but I had a bowazon at level 50, it would just be trash items as I would never need it. Previously I would probably create a new amazon to build up to use it. Won't have to do that anymore. That's what I mean! I will wait for release to see though.

Yeah, that's a good point about low level drops. If you have a high level amazon then there isn't any reason to store that level 30 bow you come across. But this time with the auction house available, you will at least have a good outlet to get rid of that lvl 30 bow.

With builds being so easy to change and tweak, and with the inferno difficulty made completely for all max level players, I think the focus in D3 is shifting from leveling toons and spending time in the low levels to playing your max level toons in inferno and gathering gear for them, including your off the wall favorite builds for said toons. Instead of creating mules to store low to mid level gear for new toons you want to make, you will be making mules to store all the max level gear for your favorite max level builds for you endgame characters.

It's a shift of game focus for certain, but in some ways I like the sound and design of it. Again, none of us will know until the game is out and we experience it for ourselves, but to me, it kind of sounds like fun. I do like the concept of devoting time into fleshing out long term characters rather than spending time leveling 5 different necromancers just to play with different builds...

You cant create mules in D3, at least without sacrificing slots for real chars.

Well you only need 5 slots right? One for each character type. Why would you need more?

I guess we shall find out when the game releases! I am hoping it all works out well. I have enjoyed the beta a lot.

So, what are your thoughts on Blizzard working to simplify the tooltips? I am going to withhold judgment until after they patch the beta to add them but I am not very fond of the idea that we may need to leave the game and go to a website to get the numbers behind the skills no matter how awesome that website will likely be. I appreciate that they are trying to make the game more accessible to everyone but I really dont see any problem with the complexity of the current tips. I would think they would have to have some kind of number there for them to be useful in the slightest bit for people that want that information.

Jay Wilson talked previously about how in Diablo 2, some players *raises hand, would be compelled to leave the game to research skills and stats before committing to investing in them and how that was unwanted.

Did anyone order the Book of Cain and if you did was yours shipped yet?

mine says it will be at least 5 weeks before we get more.

If you play hardcore there will be permanent character death. I can see the need to "re-roll" a new character often.

The Monk is a tank!

I have two fist weapons that gain +6 health per spirit spent each, plus one glass star helm that gains +3 health per spirit spent. They stack, so that's 15 health restored per EACH spirit point spent.

One lashing tail kick costs 30 spirit, and heals for 450 health (30 spirit x 15 health per point).
One lethal decoy costs 75 spirit, and heals for 1125 health (75 spirit x 15 health per point).

patch 8 incoming soon(ish)!

In the next beta patch (coming soon), we'll be making some changes to the way we store character data. These changes won't be visible to players, but we'll need to wipe all characters in the Diablo III beta in order to fully implement them. As with previous characters wipes, this wipe will also affect gold, achievements, followers, and artisans.

We're currently looking to release beta patch 8 before the weekend -- potentially as soon as this evening -- but we don't have a precise ETA. We apologize for the short notice and thank you for your continued testing and feedback.

All your characters are now dead. Beta patch 8 is upon us. No player facing changes, yeah right!

I already know D2 LOD is the superior experience for me. D3 is going to be great as well but nothing matches the music, gameplay, monsters, and levels of D2 LOD for me personally.

Waiting at the main screen with the gates just listening to the Ancients theme was a meditative experience lol :)

Still not in the beta :( but there's still a chance I could get in over the Christmas break, right? Right?

From Bashiok on the Bnet forum

I just want to cut right to it and state that the reason we don’t have a release date yet is because the game isn’t yet where we want it to be in terms of our quality standards. We aren’t holding it back on account of any one piece of the game, or for any other outside factors. While it is indeed playable from beginning to end, we’re still actively working on many individual game elements and the ways that they interact with one another, with a great deal of iterative tweaking, balancing, polishing, adjusting, redesigning, and retesting going on. We’re going to continue beta testing, and before too long that’s going to include a large influx of new invites.

Much of this iteration obviously takes place behind closed doors, so I can sympathize with the concerns about the lack of visible progress, and the sentiment that we should just go ahead and ship the game. Until we’re able to reveal more of the results, I can only assure you that we are indeed working on critical game systems that directly impact the core of the experience.

I also realize a lot of people were hoping for a release date announcement at the VGAs. We’re simply not going to be able to dispel or comment on release date rumors and speculation every time someone expects an announcement. We’ll be announcing a release date when we determine the game is ready, and not holding it back just to line it up with any particular game-industry event.

The bottom line is that development of our games and preparations for release are long and complicated. We’re just as excited to get the final version into your hands as you are to play it, but making sure it lives up to our quality standards will always be the most important factor in that process.

Keep that hope alive! :)

I could literally comment on every single change they're doing to the next patch... but here's the big ones:

Cleave
Ability will now deal 115% weapon damage to all targets caught in its swing, rather than 120% weapon damage to the primary target and 90% weapon damage to secondary targets
It's clear that the D3-team wants every skill to become OP, rather than nerfing everything. BIG buff and will mean a lot to lvl 60 PvE.
Rapid Fire
Initial Hatred cost reduced from 30 to 20
Yay, now even more noobs will use this :/
A new skill has been added: Cyclone Strike
Available at level 7
Costs 75 Spirit
Pulls all enemies within 24 yards towards you, followed by a furious blast of energy that deals 275% weapon damage as Holy
Seriously can't wait to try this sucker out!
Lethal Decoy
This skill has been removed
Wait, REALLY? Oh well, I guess they saw that video of the Chinese dude beating Skeleton King in one hit...
General
Signature spells no longer cost Arcane Power, regardless of level
ZOMG! They were pretty much free before, now it's just ridiculous :lol
Diamond Skin
Cooldown reduced from 25 seconds to 15 seconds
Duration reduced from 5 seconds to 3 seconds
It's clear that Blizzard are really trying to make this skill a "Oh-shit"-button. Especially with it now only being active for 3 seconds.

edit: Overall a BUNCH of shit in this patch. Gonna be fun!

Wow, the menus look amazing now :D

I created my BattleTag before downloading the new patch and am getting thrown to my account page when attempting to login to D3. Did check out some of the new menus, although I don't see any key mapping or tooltips options.

Yeah I can't log in either :) (Errorcode 3003)

Yeah nothing beats Matt's compositions. I really like Diablo 3's art style over the last two though. The whole oil painting look is awesome...and makes me wish they would've at least made an effort to get him to do the soundtrack. Gameplay is still top notch though.

EDIT: Should we start a battle tag list?

mine says it will be at least 5 weeks before we get more.

I ordered mine through Amazon. I got an email today saying that it is going to be at my house Dec. 21 instead of Jan 12. Apparently they officially said a release date for it but i'm still seeing it as a release date of Jan 10.

Patch note they missed:

Teleport by way of banner now has a 100% chance of freezing you in place for 30 seconds to infinity.
