Diablo 3 Beta [Beta withdrawal underway!]

Hi, guys! My account just got activated and this is my first post on NeoGAF.

I was very lucky! I registered on friday and Im already in. I have been lurking for months now and thought it would take a long time to be able to post.

So, could you guys answer me this: I have an Radeon HD5450 1GB. Will that allow me to run Diablo 3 well?

Also, if you havent bought WoW or Starcraft, is there a chance you can get into the beta?

Thanks for the help. Happy to finally be here and be part of the discussion!
The only thing required to get in the beta is having a game registered and signing up. So if you have D2, that is enough to get the beta through opt-in. Location seem to be more important, since the last wave was 100k invites to US accounts.

HD5450 is enough to play the game at "low" according to the list that was going around at the beginning of beta. Not sure if that is still valid for release though.

Thanks. I dont have any game registered though. :(

Also, Im from Brazil so I guess there was no chance anyway.

Too bad about the low, but I hope its playable.

Anyone has a clue when its releasing?

Servers are only NA. Invites have been sent to other regions as well. Hard to know the breakdown, but most of them are probably sent to NA accounts.

Yep, even us euro players play on the US servers. Also, you can post on the US forums with your EU account, kinda of weird when you think about it :P

It is only weird in the context of starcraft 2 and bnet2. Diablo 3 is not going to be region restricted (since latency does not affect the games as much as for starcraft). The only restriction is that you can only use your local RMAH, but you can play in all regions (seperate characters of course).

Yeahhh just got kicked out of a single-player run because of a lost server connection.. not entirely thrilled with the battle.net requirement right now.

I am really enjoying the beta and cant wait until the full release, but the game doesn't have the level of polish I would expect from a Blizzard game at this level of development.

Normally adding 100,000+ testers means the game is practically done and all that is left is to stress the servers for release but there are still a lot of small issues in this build. Achievements are buggy (I have the achievement for killing 50 special monsters, but not the sub achievements for killing 10 or 20). Several interfaces are not as user friendly as I would prefer (I wish the crafting interface would show the level requirement of an item without having to click on each one). Even the logon screen is slightly annoying as text input defaults to the username field even if the username is saved forcing you to hit tab or click the password field to login.

I also agree that the graphics are kind of muddy making it difficult to pick out the interactive elements from the background. This game currently feels like it is months away from release.

Is stuttering a common issue for anyone else? I experience significant stutter on both my laptop and PC (which should both run this without any problems whatsoever). It feels like you need to experience some animations before they stop stuttering. I went into a dungeon and found an enemy I had not yet encountered in my play session. Upon hitting it, the framerate dipped so low that I died before it recovered.

I had stuttering issues.. to the point where the game was more or less unplayable. BUT, updating my drivers seemed to resolve it. Either that or Blizz patched it around the same time.

Many people said their stuttering issues were related to sound, though. Have you tried muting things just as a test?

I beat the beta and it was fun and made me want the full game. However I have no idea why it took so many years to make? I'm guessing they would prototype, play it, scratch it all and start over..that or it was one of those things were assets just didn't hold up as years went by and they had to just keep updating and rebuilding from playtests. Either way It's cool and it's more Diablo and I can't complain but its not like "OMG this is why this took forever to come out. IT'S AMAZING"

Well, I understand what you mean. But don't forget that you've only played the first act. You shouldn't judge it just yet. And also, Blizzard are just perfectionists.

Yeah you'll be fine. I have a laptop with 310M. And it runs great on medium/low. You can probably run on high with no problem.

A friend offered me to borrow his acc.

I need the beta client though. Where could one acquire such a thing?

Edit: He told me not to download it through the battle.net acc page, because it could trigger a ban.

Why would it trigger a ban? You're only allowed to download the client from battle.net on one computer?

I play D3 on a laptop and a PC. I even lended my account to a friend in a completely different country and everything has been fine.

Is there any point to using the "swing weapon" ability instead of using the energy/mana/whatever generating moves by default?? As a Monk I see no point in swinging my fist weapons/bo staff/etc. when I could be generating Spirit for my more powerful moves...

Do weapon effects like vampiric and +damage modifiers only apply if you use the default swing weapon attack?

I have stuttering every 20 seconds or so and I have an i7 and a top of the line video card. It should not be happening. So Blizzard will hopefully fix it.

You don't have to take one of those basic skills. I don't as Wizard.
I was using a bow for range and magic when I had it.

Weapon stuff applies to everything

great beta... what do you all do with all the gold you get ? I upgraded the smith to level 4 and still got like 20k left

Awesome beta - feels like Diablo in the finger tips. Blizzard does control better than anyone else.

It looks very pleasing but the first act does not seem so dark. Great atmosphere though.

Loving Witch Doctor so far, at 12.

Can't wait to dig into the other classes. Maybe I'm crazy, but the graphics don't seem much better than Torchlight even. Not that it matters or anything, but yeah, not impressed.

That is completely on purpose.

The fact you don't allocate skill points really bothers me. Makes the game really straightforward - the fact it's so easy doesn't help either. In the past you could make various builds for each class, now it will just be the skills you choose and that's over. How is that better than Diablo II? That's actually worse. I like the game so far but the lack of a challenge and depth of character builds is shameful.

There aren't additional difficulties enabled in the beta. So yes, Normal is extremely easy.

As far as customization goes: toss in 30 levels' worth of passive abilities, activated abilties, with five unique runes per ability to alter your actives, and I'd say character builds can be plenty deep.

A Character Calculator for reference:

I'm tired of people bitching about this game being easy already. The demo has one difficulty level and yes, it is easy. The final game will have harder settings to choose from.

You'll also have runes, but I kind of agree with you. I don't think it makes the game worse, but it almost feels like Diablo for dummies. Part of the problem with not allocating points to stats or skills is that you don't necessarily feel like you're getting more powerful. There's no possible way to screw up your character build though. You can tell they wanted to make more of an action based game. I personally think it was to the game's benefit in the end.

One thing I have to say though is that it seems like there's a few skill combinations for each class that give you the feel of different builds. When Blizzard was asking for feedback on the newest Diablo 2 patch, I noticed a lot of people asking to include an option to respec. Diablo 3 gives people the option to change their build on the fly and adapt to different situations.

If people are still saying the game is too easy after what I posted, it's their own fault for being ignorant.

Gah, that podcast said that the HP has really been increased in lower levels and I can't help but think that is because of later game tuning so that would be a great sign of the difficulty to come. There were probably lvl 60 testers getting obliterated in inferno difficulty.

edit: disclaimer that I am 100% confident that this game will own all of us later on.

Oh look another person who hasn't read a single article about the game.

Although I 100% understand this is early Act 1 normal and it's mostly a tutorial, after having played Dark Souls, I kinda want a Diablo game from Blizzard with hard mode right from the start.

Maybe Diablo 4...

you can always try hardcore mode from the start. I know I will when the game launches...

So far I'm lovin Wizard and Barb (leveled both to 13)

and really hating WD and Monk.

Demon hunter is so-so, I need to level him up a little more before I can decide if I like it or not.

So far my time with the game and playing with fellow gaffers has been great. I think the art direction, atmosphere, and gameplay mechanics are the appropriate evolution for the series and still provide for a "one more run" experience. I really feel that anyone letting these things hinder their experience because it's not enough like diablo 2 are being blinded by nostalgia. Diablo 3 seems to be on the right track by not trying to be another iteration of diablo 2.

In a few years after diablo 3 releases, I'm sure we'll start seeing d3 clones with similar mechanics. It's just the natural evolution of a great game series and is being made to suit the kind of gamer that now runs the gaming industry. At the same time blizzard is sticking to their roots and growing the game from the successes they've made and sticking with addictive, fun gameplay.

Just one mans opinion.

I'm afraid you can't do that: Hardcore mode requires clearing the game once in normal difficulty... just like it did in Diablo 2 long ago (it has been patched out since then).

The mechanics probably are, but whether the art direction is appropriate is up for debate. I think it looks fantastic, but not necessarily for a Diablo game. As for being blinded by nostalgia, that's not it, since I never stopped playing D1 and 2. Played both just last month actually and they have a better look than 3, no doubt.

The game saves every 5 seconds or so, you're unlikely to have lost progress.

I played a bunch when I first got in late last year. When Bnet was having major issues I got disconnected a bunch and lost multiple items multiple times. I don't think it saves as much as you think it does.

the art style and animation are class though
and im guessing diablo will have more monsters on screen than torchlight

Allocating points was dumb, because there are so many ways you can screw it up and only a few ways that you could do it optimally. So basically people would just go to gamefaqs, find the optimal builds and do them. So you only had the illusion of choice with allocating skill points.
