wants Kerry to win... didn't we hear this before?

http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/09/19/hastert.remark/index.html

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Top Democrats slapped back Sunday at a remark by House Speaker Dennis Hastert that al Qaeda leaders want Sen. John Kerry to beat President Bush in November.

At a campaign rally Saturday in his Illinois district with Vice President Dick Cheney, Hastert said al Qaeda "would like to influence this election" with an attack similar to the train bombings in Madrid days before the Spanish national election in March.

When a reporter asked Hastert if he thought al Qaeda would operate with more comfort if Kerry were elected, the speaker said, "That's my opinion, yes."

Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe called Hastert's comments "disgraceful," saying there was "no room for this in our political discourse."

"And I remind you that, you know, we could have done a lot better," McAuliffe said on CNN's "Late Edition."

"The president of the United States, on August 6th of 2001, was told in his briefing that America was going to be attacked by al Qaeda and they may use airplanes," McAuliffe said, referring to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

"He didn't call the FAA. He didn't leave his monthlong vacation. He sat down there."

Kerry's running mate, Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina, said Hastert "has joined the fear-mongering choir."

"Let me just say this in the simplest possible terms," Edwards said at a rally in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. "When John Kerry is president of the United States, we will find al Qaeda where they are and crush them before they can do damage to the American people."

Hastert, who as speaker heads the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, showed no sign of backing off his comments.

His spokesman, John Feehery, said Sunday that the speaker's comments "were consistent with the speaker's belief that John Kerry would be weak on the war."

"If John Kerry is perceived as being weak on the war, then of course, his election would be perceived as a good thing by the terrorists," Feehery said in a written response to questions about Hastert's remarks.

"The fact that John Kerry can't make up his mind about the war only strengthens that perception."

Neither the Bush campaign nor the White House had any comment on Hastert's remarks, but Bush has accused Kerry of repeatedly changing his position on the war in Iraq.

The comments followed a remark by Cheney earlier this month that Americans might be subjected to another terrorist attack if they were to make "the wrong choice" in November.

Cheney later said that any president must expect more attacks and that his point had been that he felt Bush was better prepared to deal with the threat.

Some Republicans played down Hastert's comments Sunday.

"I doubt that Osama bin Laden is likely to weigh in on our presidential election," said Rep. Chris Cox of California, chairman of the House Policy Committee and fourth-ranking member of the Republican leadership behind Hastert.

Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska called the remarks "silly."

"I think most Americans understand that, regardless of who's president, the terrorists are still going to be terrorists, and they're going to still target Americans," said Hagel, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations and Intelligence committees.

"And I don't think terrorists of the world sit around the campfire gauging who's the easier president to deal with."

It was the second time this month that Hastert's comments have provoked a public row.

Billionaire George Soros, a major backer of Democratic causes, asked the House Ethics Committee to investigate Hastert after the speaker suggested in a television interview that Soros got money from "drug groups."

Hastert later said he was referring to organizations to which Soros has contributed that favor drug legalization, but he ignored Soros' demand for an apology.

Analysts differ on just how much the Madrid bombings influenced the Spanish election.

Some say they prompted Spaniards to vote out Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar, a key U.S. ally in the Iraq war. Others say Aznar's insistence on blaming Basque separatists, not Islamist terrorists, tipped the electorate against him.

In any case, Aznar's successor, Socialist Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, withdrew Spanish troops from Iraq shortly after taking office.

I personally think most Americans are stupid but hey... Let's just get to the debates I say... I think those are gonna be REAL fun.

As I've been told, the only problem with America is that it is full of Americans. Judging by the latest polling which puts Bush well in front of Kerry you're damn right you get the leaders you deserve. Unfortunately the rest of us have to put up with it.

Yes because all Americans are rude, obnoxious and only care about themselves... America's biggest problem extends from the age old axiom money=power. There are good people here, often however the "regular" persons voice is drowned out. I've yet to see a perfect country but I'd sure as hell would like to find that place...

Yes, because changing the world by killing innocent people is ok if it's for the "greater good," right?

I find myself on the fence on all of this, I mean I agree to some extent that SOME americans get the leaders they deserve ... but on the other hand, stupidity has always been louder than intelligence. That's not an American thing, it's a human thing.

You haven't been reading this forum enough, have you? Not all of us are or have ever been behind Bush and his idiotic policies. The voices of dissent have been effectively drowned out by the media and this administration, but don't let that fool you about America's people.

Put it this way, if over half of you are going to vote for George Bush you have a BIG problem. IMO George Bush personifies much about American culture, its greed, arrogance, ignorance and incompetence. It is a country run by and for the corporate elite, and the American people, these 'regulars' follow along like the sheep they are, blinding led by the supposedly independent corporate media.

There are good people there, some great people have come out of America, but half of 'em are just George Bushes and nearly the other half are just blind sheep who like the other guy. From my (foreigner) perspective, Democrat or Republican seems to make little difference, I think your society it simply put, broken at the core. Your long touted ideals of liberty, freedom and democracy for the interests of the masses has long since given way to the elite corporate and special interest groups serving the interests of the few that, to a very large extent, determine the policy directions of governments regardless of who is in office. If you are a dissident then don't let any blind sheep tell you otherwise, for you are a true patriot.

Well that gets a big... duh.

In this case you don't have to LIKE the other guy to feel that at the very least what we need is a change. We will get NO change by letting Bush stay in office, at least with Kerry there is the potential for change.

You know that was a great speech for somebody..... Many country's have problems with the political pieces in place that run them... and you don't make changes to those pieces overnight. People here are trying to make the small but incremental changes necessary via local gov't, state then national to make the changes necessary. People are sheep that doesn't come from living in one country. People want to believe their leaders are looking out for them, have there bests interest in heart... Not enough of us are cynical and really take the time to look at what's going on... in our homes, in our neighborhoods, cities, states, country AND the world. That's a problem with people all over, not just here.

You know what doesn't help from an international standpoint? When other "superpowers" don't attempt to strongly express their displeasure with the actions one country makes.... So much of what goes on in each country is now interconnected... be it by economic means or whatever... so the US attacks Iraq... much of the world disagrees with it, including the other "superpowers"... so what do they do? Say no, no, no... but then help in increments anyway. Hell even a parent training a child knows that's not how you correct something. But other countries are so afraid of affecting their relations with the US.... the reality is the US is tied to those relations just a strongly as the other countries are, and if enough of those relations got hurt maybe more people here and outside would realize... damn our gov't is fuckin up.

I pretty much agree with this, however the whole 'the devil you know is better than the devil you don't know.' should apply to this as well. I really don't believe Bush deserves to get re-elected, but it would be nice to have a candidate worth voting for on his own merits.

True... and maybe that's what alot of Americans are thinking... I can only speak on my own feelings about it.

While I personally hate the "Americans are stupid" shit that's going on in this thread (it's just as ignorant as saying "Blacks are stupid"), but I will say why I will probably either throw my support for Bush or not vote at all.

I don't like Bush too much... most of his policies I have been against, but many people have said they are voting for Kerry because they dont like Bush, I'm the exact opposite. I do not like Kerry. I can't believe this is the best the democrats could do... Bush has completely and utterly fucked up but I have no doubts he'll get re-elected. Why the hell did Kerry run nothing but the "I'm a war hero" ticket is beyond me. America has already proved that WE DONT CARE. Clinton burned the flag, dodged the draft and he was our president for 8 years. Coming out and saying "HEY LOOK AT ME I SERVED 4 MONTHS IN NAM I AM A WAR HERO!!!! BUSH SUCKS DID COCAINE IN NATIONAL GUARD LOLOL!!! OH HEY IM A WAR HERO!!!!" That just really puts me off. Anyone who has to call themselves a war hero over and over isn't exactly my idea of a hero... Funny he doesn't talk about his senate record (something that is far more legit than a few months term in nam 30 years ago). And I'm not defending Bush here, but I'm just saying that there is something I don't like about Kerry... something that, when I watch him on TV I just cringe (like I'm sure many of you do with Bush). Ahhh I'll probably just stay home on election day... or maybe just vote Razoric. :O

There is nothing wrong with mentioning it in passing or letting people know about it, but he's practically based his whole campaign around it... well around that and Bush hate. And it's obviously backfiring. Maybe he can regain some ground when there are debates so people can see where he truly stands.

Now, I'm not a big political junkie (I can't stand politics), so correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this the kind of attitude that people always use as a reason they hate George W.?

That depends on what you mean by "people." The country is largely split about the issues, so the politicians find themselves having to tread a thin line to gain support. Kerry and Edwards already have most staunch liberals, but they need the people who are not exactly dissappointed with Bush if they want to win. When the democrats are being constantly attacked for being soft on defense issues, I think the last thing they need say is something along the lines of negotiating with al Qadea.

Once agian, we have someone else who hasn't paid an ounce of attention to the presidential race coming in and making grand assumptions about candidates. If you don't want to come across as a complete moron, maybe you should pay attention to the candidates and their stances before you post tripe like this on a message board. I'd like you to pull up one reference to Kerry proclaiming himself a "war hero" or anything like that.

They better hope and pray that if Bush gets elected that absolutely no terror attacks happen within the United States.

A lot of the problem is that one side will bash the other so much that nobody looks like a good candidate anymore. Everything is picked up on and blown out of proportion. Hell if George Washington were running for president right now someone would make him look like a douchebag and everybody would think he was a horrible candidate.

Half of us? Do you understand that last election only 67% of the country voted? And that LESS than half that number elected this fool to office?

I dunno Darien. I think we're looking at the very real possibility that the majority of America is stupid now. As such, it is imperative that we round them all up and toss them into Mississippi and Alabama and build a huge ass wall around them. We'll call it Mississippabama, or just Hell for short. Let them have their Kingdom of Fear and Brute Stupidity on their own terms, where it can't fuck with anyone else.
