Did Infinity Ward screw up by opting out of a Public Beta?

Infinity Ward (whom I love) elected to skip the whole public beta thing this time for MW2.
They felt that a couple dozen (hundred?) staff members, testers, pros, friends etc would be able to get the job done.

The game hasn't even been released to the masses yet, and already under the map glitch videos are appearing: http://www.videogameszone.de/aid,69...arfare-2-Glitches-auf-der-Takedown-Map/Video/

My questions are:

1) Did Infinity Ward make the right choice by not going with a public beta? (free* widescale debugging)
2) Will Infinity Ward approach glitch fixing like Valve/Bungie (within 24-48 hours) or like Treyarch (3 months)?

* I use the term "free" loosely.

Discuss.

only the PC version gets custom stuff like mouse control, text chat in game, and graphics settings.

CoD4 had out-of-map glitches appear pretty quickly even with a beta. It'd be nothing more than a glorified demo, anyway.

Most console public betas are just marketing tools to get the word out IMO. I am guessing the same stuff would have got by even with beta release to the public.

Do IW owe you guys something that they have to put up public beta? Or you gonna boycott if they don't?
These threads really bring out the stupid on this forum. You don't see a problem with those videos?

But yeah, no sale.

You can't possibly have missed the point of this thread by that much.

You (the rhetorical you) will buy it anyway. End of story.

But since it'd only have a handful of maps how would all of these glitches be fixed?

I guess then it becomes a question of: Is it worth having 3 glitch free maps out of 12 on ship day? I don't know, I just feel that IW and Treyarch really let glitching run rampant in the past two COD titles, and they leave the glitches in the game a lot longer than you generally see with Bungie or Valve games (which is a seperate problem, I know).

There are under the map glitches in MW1 that IW never bothered fixing, so I was really hoping for a different approach to MW2. Specifically, since IW isn't much for fixing glitches after the fact - certainly not in a timely fashion - I was hoping to see more effort put into the prevention of glitching in the first place. Whether that was done by changing how they build maps, or public testing the heck out of a map before it goes to release would be up to them.

So my heart sank a bit when they said "no public beta" because with WaW dozens of under the map glitches were identified with the public beta, and *some* were fixed with a patch for when the game shipped.

Still, I'd take 3 bug free maps for my $80 on release over 0.

Wasn't really keeping track on the gaming news these past few months, forgive me if i say stupid things.

The game wouldn't have been done in time. I'm calling it now, the game is going to be bug ridden, atleast on the PC.

The PC version still isn't finished :)

Moriarte: Will there be a multiplayer PC demo shortly after release? The PC community is largely skeptical at best right now and with no ability to trade-in or rent, this is a real gamble for our wallets.

Vince-IW: No plans for a demo currently. We are still working on finishing the PC game right now (yes, I know... we need to get done!)

The experience you get with Modern Warfare 2 is the exact experience the developers wanted you to have. If you see a "glitch" it is a feature, put there by your benevolent developers...most certainly not a bug.

:lol True, it wouldn't feel right if I didn't have a guy magically shooting me from under the ground. Maybe that will be one of the new perks.

I agree with this thread and I really hope that they fix these glitches fast but I also feel making a thread about it is just going to show it to people who didn't know it was there in the first place. :/

Cut IW some slack. Graphics settings and text chat take a long time to implement.

Unless they made a beta with all of the multiplayer levels months in advance, or completely change the way they make maps (COD4 and WaW had map glitching as well), it wouldn't have made a difference anyways...

EDIT: Wait a minute, this is just a Campaign level, it isn't even multiplayer.

EDIT again: oh, there's a second video with MP.

A public demo may have eased people's opinions on IW.net and the game itself. However, because IW no longer give a shit, it didn't.

Short answer, no. They stand to make more money from a game release than anyone else ever. Long answer, also no. They're going to be rolling in a vault of gold like Scrooge McDuck!

First vid is campaign. Second I believe is MP.
I believe that even if they had put 3 maps out there for MP Beta test, that come release those 3 maps would have been sufficiently debugged such that most (maybe all) glitches and bugs are discovered, posted to youtube, and hand delivered to IW for fixing. Worst case scenario (for the players) is you have 3 bug free maps come launch.

Is something like this necessarily cost effective for IW? Probably not.

It seemed like IW didn't have enough time left at the end to reserve public beta. However, I don't see as a big deal, since with internet connection and the way companies update games nowadays, the launch date of the game is the start of public beta anyway. As long as they address the issues quickly, I don't see a problem. I vaguely remember that it took them like little more than a month to release first patches for COD4 including passing MS code checks; PC patch came out earlier since they didn't have to pass any test.

The game will sell, everything else doesn't matter to IW.

Seems to be pretty much the perfect answer for every MW2 related problem. :D

Map glitch fixes are coming via DLC probably. It costs money for that kind of support you know.

If IW's support for MW2 is indicative by MW1's support, you'll just have to set up trip mines by the access points to them.

Regardless, game will sell a metric epic fuck ton, so I'm sure they won't really care.

infinity ward screwed up when they fucked over the people responsible for the success of them and the call of duty franchise

Don't forget 50 cents per keyboard button you need to use.
Keyboard? Dude, the mouse support is just menu navigation. Game will still need to be played with a controller.

It is going to be one of the biggest selling games of all time
despite me boycotting it
. So I really don't think one can really say they 'screwed up' about anything.

Jesus stop with the IW/COD threads. There's nothing here that couldn't have been discussed in the main thread. People should be banned from making cod threads without the consent of a mod.

Talk about misplaced anger. Don't be mad at the OP , be pissed at the dick who made you click on the thread.

I'm sure they won't be able to sleep at night, knowing that they have earned the eternal ire of at least a few dozen gaffers.

You can buy a lamborghini with the proceeds from your obscenely successful videogame, but you can't escape the curse of GAF!!!1!

Wait, that video shows ONE out of map glitch. Watch the team ROOMBA v2 griefing videos to see that kind of stuff abused in TF2. Yeah, plugged now, but discovered only some time after launch.

That's not Gears of War bad.

The game isn't even out yet. It'll be interesting to see what happens when everybody's on it.
