Did Infinity Ward screw up by opting out of a Public Beta?

Wow, I do believe this the first time a game has ever gone from so much love to so much hate even before the release date. This is worse than the GTA IV and Bioshock backlash put together.

To answer the OP, no. Very few games even have betas these days. Most of them are glorified demos to begin with. This thread seems more like another not-so-stealthy troll of Infinity Ward.

I think people should pretty much shut the fuck up until they play the game if they're planning on getting it. Agreed?

Agreed. New NeoGAF rule: no threads about unreleased games.

Troll implies unwarranted judgement of a situation they seemed to revel in creating to begin with. IW and activision will get all the flak they deserve by all accounts so far.

It makes no sense to not have had an open beta, because IW.NET needed to be tested before hundreds of thousands of gamers hit it simultaneously on launch day.

I'll be impressed if it's not a disaster.

Outside of their horrid treatment of the PC version, I really don't see what Infinity Ward has done that's warranted so much hate.

I think it's fair to leave the official thread to the people who are excited for the game. We bitch and complain in every other thread, let them have the official stuff to talk about things they're excited about without us dropping in to say "Game isn't balanced for <insert feature here>"

That's more than enough! Their actions can affect us all, Console and PC alike.

Which crowd is doing the trolling or hostile commentary BTW? Like it was said in other topics on the subject if IW and activision didn't want any beef with this group they shouldn't have started the discussion with bs corporate pretenses and the like. IW opened the door a little and pc group has basically jacked it wide open now. Don't start none won't be none is a good piece of advice for this company in the future. IW should just pull and Epic I don't care what they do it's not like they are robbing me of my control options.

After all the lust for this game did they really need a Public beta? IW can come out and call everyone on gaf bitches and it will not change the outcome. People here will still purchase it.

I agree that both Infinity Ward, and parent company Activision, are doing some ridiculous things with the release, simply because they know it's going to sell no matter what. I was going to get the PC version, but since it seems to be gimped and nothing more than the console version with KB/M, I'm opting for the 360. The PC shit pissed me off, but I still believe I'm going to enjoy the game. I don't let the actions of a publisher affect whether I'm going to enjoy a game or not, unless they do something to the game that changes that.

PC gamers have every right to be pissed off. But it just seems like the entire NeoGAF community is up in arms over the entire treatment of the game. Just my $.02.

I must have missed it, what was the Bioshock backlash?

As they should be! Everyone should care......

Public betas take a fair bit of work, since you have to polish a certain section of the game to retail level playability and then send it through QA. The game would probably be glitchier if they had held one.

You sound like a sheep. So if Activision sacrifices a child for each copy sold your okay with that? Yeah the response is out there but when does a consumer takes into account what a company does? It sounds like your making an excuse for an addiction and everything else can go to hell.

Sacrificing children?

...

You're really equating buying MW2 with sacrificing children?

I'm gonna go out and buy 20 copies just for you. Babies will suffer.

What does Infinity Ward lose out on not having a beta?

Even if the MP game was horribly broken, the playerbase wouldn't care enough to do anything significant so long as IW fixed it up during release or some time after the launch.

Frankly, everyone is lucky they aren't charging you $60 for the SP portion of the game and $60 for the mp portion and then charging a further monthly subscription fee to play it after the free months are over.

The absence of such is yet another 'Feature' for which the playerbase has overlooked and failed to thank IW for.

What a sense of entitlement. What next? Free voice chat? Free in-game upgrades? The nerve of people today...

I was banned a few weeks ago for a post just like this. Might want to be careful. The reason why there is so many threads is because of TONS of spoilers. I've been avoiding the main thread because a bunch of people have the game already and I dont want anything to be spoiled as do others.

Anyway, imo, I'm glad they didnt put out a public beta. I saw enough trailers for the game and thats all I want until the full game is released. Plus I want to start at level 1 ONCE, I do not want to level up in a beta and then have to start over a few weeks later.

Did you skip this part child?
Yeah the response is out there but when does a consumer takes into account what a company does?

No, I didn't skip it.

There's no reason for you to draw a comparison like that, then marginalize it immediately thereafter. There's a much better way to prove your point than creating useless comparisons and calling people who don't agree with your opinion "sheep" at the first sound of "I respectfully disagree".

Why can't they have areas that they don't want players to reach be death traps? For the first video, that guy should have died upon landing on that second roof top.

Wait, that video shows ONE out of map glitch. Watch the team ROOMBA v2 griefing videos to see that kind of stuff abused in TF2. Yeah, plugged now, but discovered only some time after launch.

That's not Gears of War bad.

I know it isn't what you're getting at but I love those Roomba videos. I hope they do another one someday. The trivia to get out of the base always cracks me up.

If Modern Warfare 2's glitches reaches that of the Gears series am I definitely not going to play it. As to IW fixing the problems, there's still a map glitch in COD4 that I seen exploited.

Depends on the multiplayer climate when it sells, if the game does end up being very buggy then we'll know the answer about Betas!

It doesn't need a public beta, it will be classic and patched up promptly when things get pointed out. Long live IW.

Because it's very easy for apathy to allow new standards...normally ones that are very anti-consumer.

We seem to be moving in a pay for online. Almost everything is starting to cost money, for stuff that was once free. I mean, Yes I can get XBL for 25$. And it doesn't seem that bad for 13 months of online. At the same time, I've never had to pay a cent for it on PC/PS3. And it seems like more publishers and companies want to move into the same type of market. I wouldn't be surprised if Sony announced some similar payment plan next gen, or Activision starts to force their own version of "Steam" for their games on PC. And that attitude of, "Well it's only 25$ a year". Ends up turning into which one of the consoles or systems do I have to pay my 25$ a year to this time. Do I want to pay MS for this year? Sony? Nintendo(Okay, Even I doubt this one). All I know is, MS seems to be making massive bank off it.

With DLC, Games like Tomb Raider Underworld and PoP. Pretty much had stripped content sold as DLC a few months after. Unfinished at the time, but obviously was intended to be put in. Either they rush the product or figure just to charge for it(Probably both). Games like RE5 had their Versus mode which was just a remix of content on the disc which costs 5$. Games still sold a shit load and I'm sure the DLC was too. Giving them more power to do it again. And hell, with RE5's Versus. I told myself, "Well it's only 5$". Turns out it was broken as shit and I haven't bought a single piece of DLC since...and probably won't.

We can even use BC, PS3 had full BC, then partial. Then none. And what was the excuse I was hearing? "Well you should have bought the 600$ system if you really wanted it". And now they are going to be reselling an upscaled version of GoW I/II for 40$ and the fans are happily eating that shit up.

It's just that apathetic attitude that lets shit like this happen. Most of this shit wasn't even a concern. Now I have to be concerned if I'm even getting the full game when I purchase it. I've been looking at Dragon's Age and it seems like each edition comes with something else, or is missing something.

Just to cherry-pick here, but I actually love the fact that the GoW collection is being remastered and sold on BD. I don't have a PS2 at my current location, and I didn't have one when GoW and GoW2 made waves the first time, so this'll actually be the first time I can play through it. Not like I haven't watched friends do it already or play a little bit myself, but it'll be nice to have it on one disc.
