Digital Foundry, Alan Wake 2 PC - Rasterisation Optimised Settings Breakdown - Is It Really THAT Demanding?

Apparently, game is identical on PS5 and XSX, with the XSX having a very slim performance advantage (some dropped frames here and there on PS5).

I guess we need to wait for more reputable sources than this one.
Here's a different comparison but I don't know how reliable it is. The framerate in the thumbnail is clickbaity since the image is from what was obviously a blip in an otherwise smooth scene.

Do NOT turn RT on in this game. it will destroy the framerate. no way to turn on rt reflections on their own which is disappointing but the game looks stunning without.

The biggest differentiator is the Post Processing effect. Keep it at high and take the massive 20% hit. Or you will see shimmering in a lot of places.

I’m going to go ahead and say absolutely turn RT on if you have a high-end NVIDIA card.

Yep, after what I tested:

4070ti - high preset with DLSS P (4K) and PT at low is quite ok. With FG it's around 80FPS in town section, opening forest is much heavier.

With RT game has worse IQ (more noise) overall but I can't stand SSR and shadows artifacts.

Thought we don't post that unreliable 🤡's content here.
Well, it's not very reliable on pixel counting and some graphical details that it doesn't really understand, but the performance metrics aren't usually inaccurate. I think that in a more exhaustive analysis (DF, VG Tech...) they may find moments where PS5 has the advantage (in fact, with Control exactly that happened, there were moments where XSX had the advantage and vice versa), but I think that the Video metrics are correct and it seems that XSX has a better framerate.

3440x1440 DLSS Quality with Frame Generation/Max settings and getting 100fps+ on an RTX 4090. Looks great and feels fantastic.

Do turn on RT in this game.

This guy is the worst, not least bit reliable going by his resume. A fanboy channel essentially.

Looks to me like there are settings that don’t affect visuals. Why have that settings

If you’re using frame generation then you’re not running at 100+ fps and I say this as someone who owns a 4090. I really wish people would stop counting fake frames. It’s like taking $50 worth of bills and combining it with another $50 worth of counterfeit bill then, trying to pass it off as $100. You still only have $50. I guess Nvidia’s idiotic marketing is working.

Without frame gen he has 60FPS+.

If it feels smoother, I don't see the issue. I really can't tell the difference between actual 120fps and fake 120fps to be honest.

Damn, PS5 running below PC medium Preset 🤢

Close enough.

Take the 1.43x the 3070 has over the PS5 and the ~1.45x my GPU is over the 3070 in this game and I'll arrive at over 2x PS5 performance on my GPU :messenger_smiling_with_eyes:
I'm sure you watched the video to know they this games settings are a bit of an absolute because those low settings look pretty good hence the confusion about how strep the requirements were and subsequent relief that's it's not as bad as was first perceived.

Wait wut? Why does ever seen to have a hate boner for DF all of a sudden?

This vid was actually helpful for getting my 3070 performance up.

Edit: Image resolve is blurry though. I countered it by adding CAS through Reshade

4080 laptop, 1080p, ultra performance DLSS + framegen + lowest settings 220 fps at hardest part in the forest,

1080p, dlss quality, framegen on + everything maxed out + rt = 75 fps at forest where the corps is ( most demanding place ).

1080p, no dlss or framegen, maxed out = 25 fps.

Yea this game needs framegen.

City is actually a lot less demanding somehow then forest area. Sit at around 100 fps maxed out.

What i do notice however, is that the game looks good. But the diner area where alan wake 1 also is, and other indoors places the lightning is really really dark. People are just sitting in the dark really. Wish they added some more lights towards the mix.

Yup! If you have at least one of these (in this order)...

-4070
-4070 Ti
-3090 Ti
-4080
-4090

...you should be fine. I'm rockin' the 3090 Ti and this is probably the best looking PC game out there right now! Sure, performance hovers between 30 and 35fps in 1440, but it's still functional enough to be enjoyable and looks stupendous!

Any games that make upscaling technique like DLSS mandatory to play in regular decent conditions are just garbage in my opinion.
This is what I've been afraid of since DLSS started being a thing. It was fine as long as it was used to provide a bonus performance, something extra, but now more and more games have awful optimization and are "designed" around using DLSS to get playable performance, making native resolution / framerate not even possible.

And now it's not just resolution being faked, it's framerate too. People are happy about playing at 4K60fps when they are in reality playing in 720 30fps, how great.

3080. Rt makes no difference in the forest level. And took my fps from a locked 60 to mid 20s.

I’m sure it adds better reflections in the town but they come at a way higher cost then rt reflections do in other games. I love rt reflections but not at this cost.

The GI and direct lighting are already so good in this game that ray tracing does little to really enhance them. I also believe there is no dynamic time of day so that makes rt lighting really unnecessary.

Also, the game uses signed distance fields for reflections, not just cube maps so they're much better than even ssr.

Was it from a written article? Because I don't remember seeing that in the video.
It isn't. He's working on a follow-up video and posted this screenshot. It's not in the video nor the article.
oh shit those 2070 super fps numbers. What CPU was he using?
He didn't specify but my guess is the same CPU he was using in his other rig? Like a 12900K or 13700K, not sure. Whatever the case, the game is very light on CPU requirements.

is this game the best example of CPU utilization , like low CPU usage but high GPU usage , is that how it should be?
sorry in advance if the question is dumb
