Digital Foundry: Mario Kart World on Switch 2: Is This Really A Generational Leap?

Nintendo is generational behind, but that's not important, because it's nintendo.

By the way, someone rich enough to gift a switch 2? I can't sell my kidney, only have one left.

Well no, as some people are stating here. 🤷‍♂️
This is just not what the hardware is remotely capable of doing in any circumstance. I know the GPU/CPU that's inside this thing (which are great) and you can't seriously convince anyone that this is representative of the device at all. It's not even using half the features Nintendo signed for when they commissioned the chip, we have third party games running on the system right now that are generationally ahead in every way and PS4 couldn't even dream of running. We never even got a Switch-specific Mario Kart game for gods sake... For the sake of graphics discussion MP4 is where it's at, running at a whooping 4K/60 with better visuals than the 2013 Killzone.

Not really. MK Wii to MK8 felt impactful. 🤷‍♂️

it did, because that was the last generational jump that was really impactful.
it was essentially the jump from GameCube to PS3.

then the jump from PS3 to PS4 was less impactful for this kinda artstyle. and this type of jump is what we see here.
a stylised PS3 game with cartoon graphics vs a stylised PS4 game following the same design will not look dramatically different, especially if the scale of the gameplay increases dramatically on top of that.

Nintendo in this case also clearly went for temporal stability over detail.
minimising pop-in and artifacts, instead of trying to maximise close range detail

Exactly. The textures are the most underwhelming aspect being showed.

Pure denial. I watched the five minute trailer on the Switch 2 direct. The small details are amazing on this. You could see birds flying in the sky and even the clouds evaporate. And we have seen so little thus far.
We had birds flying on PS3 with games like Assasins Creed and Gran Turismo 5 lol. Really you Nintnedo fans its as if you have never seen another game before besides the Nintendo ones and all the things you talk about has been done and overdone years before. Live in your own bubble I guess but dont get offended when people point out its a simple graphical upgrade on a 10year old game. ALSO absolutely, embaressing they dont have enough power to even have enough polygons to form a perfect circle but instead everything has jaggy low poly edges. Its 2025...this isnt out first entry into 3D world Jesus lol. Its like you guys cant come to grips, one time you say its laughable that this is called "ps4 level", then the other time you say how you cant expect too much from a handheld.

This is Forza Horizon 4 running at 50-60fps, high settings, on a 3 year old Steam Deck, with a game infinately larger, moredetailed than MKW. Yes, its ok to have higher expectations when you see what IS possible on a handheld. Nintendo is literally shafting you guys left and right. Also imagine, FH4 has BIRDS and LEAVES flying around as you race :messenger_face_screaming::messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy:

people like you talk about videogame graphics like school children during recess.

the fact that it has to he explained that different types of games have different goals with how they use hardware resources is funny and sad at the same time.

Trying to compare a realistic gaming sim with a cartoon style aesthetic is pure lunacy. I have been playing a lot of Mario Kart deluxe recently in preparation for this new game, and the visuals while good are nowhere near this new game.

HARD disagree that MP4 looks better than KZSF in a technical sense. It looks way, way, simpler.

Couldn't have worded it better.

I wouldn't expect PS5 quality from a tablet sized console.
but also the artstyle of mario kart makes it really hard to make really impactful changes to the overall graphics to make it look instantly "next gen" I feel.

people looked at the initial videos and even said the characters look the same as in 8, but in fact the detail is significantly increased, but mario started looking basically perfect since the Wii I feel, any additional detail to his model is only really impactful upon really close inspection.
Have you seen the crash bandicoot racing remake, artstyle is a poor excuse, they simply chose to keep it similar to mk8 for budget reasons as well as battery and performance in handheld mode.

I think that some people missed the treehouse presentation, because MKW looks gorgeous sometimes, almost CGI feels.
They much prefer to go off the compressed Switch 2 direct footage. It just supports their arguments more. The 5 mins trailer is on the Nintendo YouTube channel and is available uncompressed in 4K.

Crash team racing looks nowhere near as good as this. And they are only rendering one course at a time. Mario Kart World as the full open world to render.

Dude don't even bother, it's like talking to a brick wall really

Some of these posters are really special and should be handed a gold star for participation points

People's can't get over that Nintendo won't unlock $200M budget for graphic fidelity just because the hardware can. They'll always remain conservative and focus on gameplay above all unlike most devs focusing on the pixels but are shallow games as fuck.

But with all the peoples trying to debate MKW, remember, this is peak PS5 processing power 🤷‍♂️

Yes it's always difficult when people dare to disagree with you. Crash team looks O.K but nothing special. Perhaps it's the art style that's lacking.

So their goal is to keep circular shapes not circular as if they are missing the HW power for the most basic 3D shape. It's fuxking embarrassing lol, Switch 2 can't even have enough polygons to make a circle...2025...this problem was solved like 15 years ago if not more.

And we are supposed to cheer for this, exactly? Let's not forget they just upped their game prices beyond even the worst industry standard, this being the case just makes it all the more indefensible.

I love Digital Foundry. I could listen to their wonderful softspoken voices talking about the joycon buttons and sticks for three hours. I've been lapping up everything they've put up about NS2 and I can't wait to see them going more in-depth when it releases.

Anything YouTube is compressed btw

Even Sony lifted the foot from the pedal. Its not sustainable as of now to chase the S-tier graphics and pretty much Nintendo will never do it. They ramp up until it suits their art style and gameplay mechanics. Not to say they aren't good tech wise because ToTK on Switch 1 hardware is still witchcraft imo.

I looks a lot better than the direct footage though.

Anyone get a look at pixels 6123201-6123207In the 3rd screenshot? Seemed like Nintendo got lazy and left out some detail.

Most games will have this somewhere if you look hard enough. Some triple AAA games are pretty much a mess and get patches very close to release.
