Digital Foundry: Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 - Every Console Tested - Is Last Gen Still Viable?

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

In one of the series' most adventurous campaign modes of recent years, Call of Duty returns not just to current-gen systems - but also the quartet of PS4 and Xbox One consoles as well. The question going in really is: can those older consoles still handle a game that's increasingly pushing forward with bigger, grander mission designs? Tom tests Black Ops 6's campaign mode on every console to find out.

- Developed by Raven and Treyarch, using the MW2/3 engine instead of Treyarch's own engine.
- This video covers SP mode only, including last gen consoles.

Current Gen:
- 60hz mode: Both run with DRS 2160p with horizontal scaling
- Some low rez textures, blocky shadows and no RT support
- Both consoles have 60fps lock a majority but have some clusters of small drops
- Sub 60fps drops are few and far, SX can drop small frames more frequently than PS5
- VRR owners benefit here making the drops imperceptible to PS5/SX players
- Series S has more variable 50 to 60 with drops to mid 40's in combat areas
- Series S targets DRS 1440p with horizontal scaling and minor vertical scaling
- Visual settings broadly the same on all 3 (PS5/SX/SS)

- 120hz mode: Resolution setup is the same with more aggressive DRS
- frame rate also drops to high 60's at stress areas with more frequently 90's in gameplay
- VRR owners will benefit the most here
- Series S runs 15~30 fps lower than Series X in same spots and can go below 60fps line

Last gen:
- PS4: DRS 1080p with lowered environmental and character settings. Shadows are often disabled.
- SSR is also disabled in some places. Geometry pop-in is a lot more noticeable in open areas
- All last gen versions affected with the above.
- PS4 frame rate is between 45~60 with some stretches of 60fps
- Market place shooting is between 40 to 60 with notable screen tearing
- Notable streaming and traversal stutter also observed.
- PS4 Pro: Much is improved, DRS 1512p. Typically 60 much more often but can have stutter.
- PS4 Pro is the only console that engages full V-sync.
- One X targets 1512p DRS but frame rate is often lower than PS4 Pro
- More frequent traversal stutter on One X compared to Pro as well
- Base XBO 900 DRS and pushes the worst performance of the consoles
- Drops to mid 20's observed in some scenes as well

- "Offerings are discouragingly bad on last gen consoles excluding PS4 Pro"

Horrible showing for last gen MS but honestly I doubt many people are still playing on those consoles.

PS5 having the best version of COD I didn't expect it and we still have to see the PS5 pro version.
Eventually we will get some ps5 pro upgrades. They have it on so many systems I think they needed to get those working first. I spoke with a developer 3 months ago and they said they didn't have a pro dev kit or even knew if the ps5 pro was real.

This is likely the last major one. BLOPS III came out in 2015 for the 360 and PS3 who were 10 and 9 years old respectively. Both the Xbox One and PS4 are 11 years old.

Unless they change or make significant improvements to the rendering engine in a year's time, I think we see next years game on PS4/XBO too.

Especially if they plan on supporting the next Switch.

What’s the share of last-gen consoles? Less than 10%? Doesn’t sound like it’ll be worth supporting them anymore.

Also, although the next Switch may only be about as powerful as a PS4, it will have a much more modern feature set, fast storage, and likely AI upscaling too. You’ll be able to produce games that look and run better on it.

Yeah i think the PS4 had about 8% of boxed sales vs PS5 for MWIII. Like you say hardly seems worth it.

On the other hand around half of the PS MAU is still on the PS4 and its still a million or so in sales so maybe it is worth it?

The fact that COD still gets a yearly release on last gen consoles shows there's still a sizable, profitable market out there (unfortunately).

I wonder what’s causing the One X to run worse than the PS4 Pro here? It isn’t a situation like the current gen machines where they’re essentially neck and neck, so it’s interesting that One X is fairing considerably worse in performance.

I think this game puts the argument that Series X is more powerful than PS5 to bed! And really highlights how Sony managed to masterfully design that little 36CU beast inside PS5.

Ok, who's alt are you? We haven't had your kind of crazy around here for a while....

...I dig it.

Such a win for PS5, guys lol. A drop to 58fps, sometimes, is not going to be noticeable to anyone who doesn’t have a tool running in the background, and VRR makes that essentially even more negligible. Both premium machines drop a few frames during more intensive action sequences here, but seem to scale right back to 60fps in a matter of seconds.

Regardless of what platform you play on in regards to PS5 and Series X, you’re gonna have a good experience, performance wise. Just have a decent internet connection for said single player, because Activision. What baffles me is the One X performing worse than PS4 Pro. The performance gap there is genuinely, honestly, and provenly substantial, so the One X having a worse time running Black Ops 6 would have to be down to optimization and focus, no?

This game also performs better on PS4 Pro when compared to the X1X, should we also definitively claim the PS4 Pro is more powerful than the 1X as well? I don't follow the logic, to look at this particular game and decide to "put the argument to bed". It is obvious, when looking at the results I mentioned, that there are more variables to this games performance, other than the particulars of the hardware it's running on.

Does 80% of PS4 Pro games perform better than 1X? If so then yes .. because that's what happening with PS5 vs Series X since 2020.

You didn't answer my question and are deflecting. You said the results of "this game" puts the argument to bed between the power of the SX and PS5, so does "this game" also tell you anything about the power differential of the PS4 Pro and X1X?
