Digital Foundry: Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 - Every Console Tested - Is Last Gen Still Viable?

Played a bit of the game on the Series X and One X, both versions looked and ran fine to me. I didn’t get to the Iraq stage yet though.

Not really. There are games better on SX, game better on PS5 but most of them are kinda the same.
And namely, one of the most graphically intensive games of the current gen, Alan Wake 2, is overall more performant on Series X.

Ultimately though, it’s both sad and wild that this still matters to people as much as it does (not saying you). Console wars and console warriors are both so… Corny. Lame even.

For IW9 engine games, the PS5 seems to have a slight advantage.
* highly upgraded version of IW 8.0, dubbed "IW 9.0". The engine featured a new water simulation system, in addition to improved AI and audio.
* MWII, MWIII, Black Ops 6 and Warzone 2.0, to leverage assets from one another, reducing install size on all platforms.
I'm excited to see what improvements the PS5 Pro can make.

This

That statement "it feels so good to be on the winning side for the past 30 years" quite literally made me chuckle. That's the type of stuff you would hear on the middle school playground.

A 2~ fps difference is closer than previous IW engine games, borderline identical even.
I think this is the result of developers optimizing for the PS5 and Xbox Series X even more than they did four years ago.
The difference is so small that gamers playing on VRR monitors won't notice the difference.
The difference in 120Hz mode is also minimal, only a few fps. (This is an image of the same scene from Open Surprise.)

It really annoys me that they seemingly stopped doing side by side benchmark runs. Whatever happened to finding stress test areas and then doing same runs on them on different hardware? Its really hard to gauge performance difference between consoles when you are jumping from random clip to random clip.

2fps is enough for some warriors to claim victory. Then said console warriors will pretend that they don’t see the difference between a console and a high-end PC.

Always a joy to witness.

2fps is clearly more important than 2x fps, hahaha.

With VRR on both consoles most games this gen can be described as "almost no difference". Xbox can sometimes be better thanks to system level LFC and 120Hz but individual games can support that on PS5 as well.

You know why DF stopped, everyone knows 🤣

great to see PS4 still holding back current gen titles

Current gen only titles struggle to run at 60fps without drs going down to like 1080p so I’m not so sure having a higher base line would improve things… Unless you’re on PC or possibly PS5 Pro.

I played it on series x last night for the first time. Graphics seem very underwhelming for some reason, the last cod that impressed me was mw19 which seems crazy.

1080p would be great,. 500p is the new low.

Where the hell are they using the over-double VRAM the current consoles have compared to last gen? Pretty bad textures all around and almost on par with last gen on that front. Also they removed RT.
Treyarch has regressed technologically from 2020.

I wouldn't trust that source.

I think it looks pretty good. Some nice lighting effects in the campaign.

COD has never been bleeding edge on the gfx front!
