Digital Foundry -- Halo 4 Tech Analysis

Halo 4 looks awesome, but i think dyamic environmental shadows would greatly add to the visuals. It looks weird in the forest stage where you dont see any tree canopy shadows casting onto your gun and enemy models.

How did you capture these direct feed shots as opposed to the usual off screen stuff that people post?

Killzone 3's jungle is one of the most interesting settings this gen.

I always wondered what a Helgan forest would look like - I think they nailed it.

Goddamit this thread moves fast

A ghost being exploded in a open area, one piece rolling has pop-in shadow. Wow.. talk about nitpicking.

always the same guys.. lol
So You havent noticed that instead of smooth transition from shadow to light whole warthog was darker, then darker and light? And shadow underneath pop up not as soon as some part of it was in light, but when whole warthog was in light?

or good shots

Gears uses motion blur as anti-aliasing

There is not AA on those shots, sorry

That smoke effect was also all on Polyphony rushing GT5, they never had any kind of massive graphical glitches & problems before in their series.

They've gone bonkers with particles effects and because of PS3 design they have to be rendered in 1/16 of framebuffer resolution.

Sure most games have baked shadows but they also mix in real-time ones. The top tier looking games all use that combination. I'm not expecting 100% GI here but Halo's shadows all look pre-baked as they don't interact with moving objects and characters at all. It's using the same technique as all Insomniac games.

Halo 4 appears to be casting some real-time ones. Chief, at least, creates shadows. When you throw a grenade, it appears that the flash creates shadows as well.

There is not AA on those shots, sorry

I can't speak for the shots, because this thread is moving fast, and I must have missed them, but Gears definitely has at least 2X AA.

I believe you, I just finished Halo 3 today and the game looks stunning in places, although rather pedestrian in others. But in direct-feed screenshots viewed on my PC? Obvious imperfections all over the place. The same with Alan Wake, a gorgeous game when actually played. So many great looking games on both platforms these days, I'm glad this generation has lasted as long as it has.

Anyway, a great first try by 343i, I wonder if Halo 5 will be a cross-platform release.

Nope. Gears 3 has absolutely no AA.

Yes as I've said the characters do have self-shadows but the environment don't cast shadows onto the characters.

Gears was a built on a multi-platform engine and while nicely "tuned" for 360 it wasn't built from the ground up for it and while it looked great, particularly early in the gen, it was eclipsed by titles like Uncharted and God of War.

My point was the 360 has seen far less AAA custom engines than PS3 designed solely for the system and fully optimized. This isn't an opinion but a fact so far as I can see. This isn't a knock on the 360 itself but it has meant that while there have been a comparatively large number of titles on PS3 that stretch the system there have been less on 360.

It's nice to see Halo 4 finally delivers the 720p image and effects I expected from Halo 3, ODST and Reach but never really got and my response was really more out of amazement at the earlier, pretty much insane comments about Halo 4 being miles ahead of other top tier titles in terms of engine, because it really isn't. Which again isn't a knock but just being realistic. It's right up there in the top titles on console but it's not way ahead on its own by any measure.

im only a little into the campaign but this is definitely one of the most gorgeous games i have ever seen. i dont know much about graphics technology but the art direction in this game is absolutely incredible.

Actually its very subtle. The camera is rotating towards the shadow direction and theres a transition on the shadow. I'll check this later for myself.

There's any examples like this on Uncharted, Killzone or God of War? An open area, when you are driving a vehicle.

There is not AA on those shots, sorry
I didn't said it has AA. It uses motion blur to looks smoother. Its not like Epic did nothing to prevent aliasing.

Yeah right how did it take this long to finally get Halo in 720p to match games that came out years ago? The game looks great but the comments in this thread so far are amazing and seem to ignore the fact that it's taken this long for MS to finally deliver a top tier 1st party game technically.

I know Halo just launched so enthusiasm is at a high but please - read the article and note the comments like this:

"Remember that feeling you had when playing the first 20 minutes of God of War 3 for the first time? The sensation that the developers had somehow extracted next-gen visuals from current gen hardware? While Halo 4 doesn't quite engender that feeling of hushed awe, it gets very, very close"

"In an era where the likes of Naughty Dog and Sony Santa Monica have defined the graphical state-of-the-art with Uncharted and God of War, Xbox 360 finally has its own shot at the title - and it's a genuinely worthwhile, lavish and occasionally even breathtaking experience"

I'm a happy dual console owner but there's no doubt that until the release of Halo 4 the 360 was lacking a title that was optimized to the hilt and pushed the hardware - the PS3 meanwhile sporting many such titles.

It's great 343i have done such a great job, but put it in perspective - this is MS first party catching up not automatically outperforming.

I don't know dude. Gears has been doing it for years. That game just doesn't get the credit.

Gears one Rain level..............Oh my god!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, 5 PS3 games look better than Halo 4.

-Uncharted 2
-Uncharted 3
-Killzone 2
-Killzone 3
-God of War 3

This thread continues to deliver the LOLs. Only the power of Halo could do this.

same could be said about everyone saying that halo4 is the best looking game, and the reason why this thread is completely stupid.

This thread isn't stupid at all. It's about the DF report on Halo 4. People in the thread are really acting stupid though. But again, Halo. It makes 360 fans stupid with joy, and Sony fans salty salty salty from envy. Own both consoles. Enjoy it all.

I still don't understand why people feel God of War III has great graphics. It uses a LOT of simplistic shapes (that impressive puzzle room? Mostly just cubes), much of what it does is actually FMV (which is why it takes up so much blu-ray space)... the most impressive thing it did was the 60,000 or so polys on Kratos himself.

Uncharted 2 was pushing 1,000,000 polys in some scenes, which was definitely impressive, but at least one of those scenes was done on a train where the player had very little interactivity with the world around. The map was literally as wide as some train cars, because that's all the level was.

Halo 4 absolutely is miles ahead of these games in many, many regards, in large part because of the sheer size of its maps in comparison.

Let's be honest here. I think Halo 4 pretty much proved to everyone that developers can still push this old hardware. So the new xbox and PS wont come out until 2014 then.

I guess Forza 4 and Nuts & Bolts are good looking games.

Honestly, the reason why BF3 and COD games don't really look as good on either 360 or PS3 is because those aren't designed from the ground up for each of the respective platforms.

I wonder what those games would look like if EA and Activision actually gave their developers enough time to develop game engines from scratch for each system.

BF3's excuse is that the engine was developed with current PC and next gen in mind. The fruits of DICE's labor will be revealed on next generation consoles.

Actually the environment cast shows onto the Spartan models in multiplayer, but not vehicles or the player. Really wierd.

All I got I'm afraid.

If the KZ3 part is the same as the demo, it has nothing to do with the Halo open areas. Same for the train part in UC2.

The mech screens on KZ3 (?), I can't see any shadows?

The horse part in UC3 I thought it was on rails?
