Digital Foundry: Performance Analysis: Destiny on Xbox One

Not every game has to or should push the limits of the platform. Especially when we're talking about multiplatform\cross gen stuff. Thats just unrealistic.

Im gonna be honest, I think the 360 and PS3 versions held back the PS4 way more than the Xbox one has.

Not every game can be a graphical powerhouse.

It would be more worrying if a current gen exclusive had parity between the two.

there was an interview or an IGN article "not sure which" about destiny and how they where basically aiming for parity across the board.

oh well, its a cross gen game, but if this shit is going to be happening in next gen multiplatform games, then I will be pissed off and stop supporting those lazy ass devs that decide to aim for parity

don't blow your load early man, you need more munition the whole gen apparently.

/facepalm

This is a game that can run on last gen consoles.

Even MCC is up to 60 FPS. PVZ is 1080P60.

Bungie only hitting 30 FPS means Ps4 and XB1 should not exactly struggle.

The PVP is compromised at 30 FPS. I found playing the BETA even in PVE enemies up close would bet skipping rather than smooth movement.

Shame, I was hoping PVP wise Destiny could stand next to COD, but no.

Also the AA is crap on all consoles.

I am getting used to 60 now on Ps4, and 30 just feels 'skippy'. Destiny will never 'feel' as Good as COD / TLOU or even PVZ.

I know there is a heavy PS4 attach rate in Neogaf, would be interested to know, are you guys pissed at this parity, are we looking already at a generation of exclusives only being the ones to put the extra grunt offered by the PS4?

being as Destiny was suppose to be a lead platform on the PS4, what does this mean?

I don't mind parity as it kinda stops a lot of argument, but I also get why a question could be asked about the PS4 version

Think it looks pretty damn jaggy free on my TV. Sure there are some, but its not offensive

Guys... it's a 360 game at heart. Are we going to start complaining when the next version of Tetris runs the same on both platforms?

Some devs of cross-gen games have come up with inventive ways to avoid parity.
Traveler's Tales used supersampling to use up some of the leftover power in the PS4 versions of their last couple of games.

Great news. The more parity (without compromising the PS4 version) the better.
That's the problem here. Absolutely nothing is good with ~parity~ regarding the PS4/Xbone versions. The PS4 is clearly stronger and Destiny still has the same pop-in issues (and other stuff) like the Xbone version. That's lame and bullshit on Bungie's part.

Never said it was jaggy did I .....

I said the AA was crap - it has a blurr effect on the IQ

They should of used MSAA or the temporal one that is 'cool' right now

This is kinda what I think. The game just isn't the graphical powerhouse to push the PS4, so they probably didn't gimp the PS4 version as some crazies believe.

Oh well, don't like it, don't buy it. I just wish people would worry about gameplay more than graphics.

Since we know that the PS4 is considerably more powerful than the One, how can we be seeing multiplatform games at parity? Is it because this is not a next gen only game so the game is already held back technically by the necessity of the last gen versions?
Most likely. They probably just bumped the last gen versions up to 1080p and then just optimized the effects that were already in place and called it a day. It's the real current gen only games that are going to show noticeable differences. This year I think the biggest deal is going to be COD. That game looks built from the ground up for current gen hardware, and will have to be altered to work on last gen hardware. There will probably be some pretty big compromises for that game on XB1, most likely resolution as usual. Games that have parity across both platforms only do so because they aren't pushing the hardware very hard. FIFA 15 is a great example of this. The games will most likely be identical on both systems, but if you play the PC demo then it becomes clear why, as the game runs at a constant 120+fps on hardware comparable to the PS4. We are probably going to see far fewer games with graphical parity next year, and things will get more and more divided over the coming years as developers strive to push visuals more and have no choice but to drop resolution or effects on the XB1.

I'll believe DF more when they show actual screens. They lost credibility due to Leadbetter's texts last year.

Funny that CoD, sponsored by MS, has a huge gap to the PS4 version while Destiny, sponsored by Sony, is on par between the two consoles.

Or maybe the games just not that demanding. It is a cross gen title after all.

This is what i noticed yesterday.

When playing games like 2k14 or Infamous my PS4 starts the jet engine after ~30 minutes playtime. I played Destiny 6 hours straight yesterday and the jet engine didnt start once.

SMAA T*x. It's nice. And cheap.

Me too. My PS4 is dead silent playing Destiny, but sounds like a jet playing TLoU.

While parity is cool, the reality is that the PS4 is more powerful, And it would be quite dissapointing if only first parties took advantage of the power gap.

Then again, this is a crossgen game, so it can't be all that demanding.

When first party second year Sony games start to show it really is going to make these developers think twice if they really do want to go the parity route and have their game considered ok graphically speaking.

yes....2k14 and Infamous really show that stepless fan in motion lol.

Our PS4's are going to take off once bloodbourne and Witcher 3 release....dear heavens I should open mine after the warranty and clean it.

But its a cross gen title and to me it still looks fabulous due to the art direction and how beautiful the sky boxes are. I'm sure it could have easily been 1080p/60 with the PS4, but I've always been happy with Bungies gameplay and this game is pat down locked at 30fps with a great art style and visual set. I'm happy with everything I've seen. Venus is by far the coolest planet and really looks amazing when the sun comes into play on all the green.

Looking at GPU utilization graphs almost makes me think that The Tomorrow Children is going to make PS4s catch fire.

Hard to believe this is only the second page and we're already getting gems such as this one.
Okay, explain how I am wrong then. It is clearly an engine developed first and foremost to run on last gen hardware. It is no different than what we saw with PC games over the last generation. Higher resolution, higher quality assets, and highest rendering options that the engine has in place for it's lighting model, draw distance, and so on, but still a game optimized to run on weak hardware. It's the same reason fairly modest PC's were able to easily run games at 1080p60 for years. Destiny on current gen systems is little more than a last gen game cranked up to max in the graphical settings. I'm not saying it's a bad looking game, as the art is gorgeous and carries the visuals a long way, but it is far from what we would call a true current gen game.

But we've seen time and time again where third parties are taking advantage of the power difference between the platforms. I'd argue that there are very few big budget titles that don't

I don't think this is a big deal. If Destiny 2 is current gen only and is still on parity, then you'll have something to complain about. But as it stands it doesn't particularly seem like the game is pushing any boundaries.

Look at it this way - should get longer life out of our Playstations due to not being under as much stress xD

Call me an old softie, but I don't want every game to make my console sweat blood, nor do I want developers crucifying themselves to get there.

Think it's more a case of Bungie getting the ps4 version to a acceptable standard early on and being satisfied with that and then squeezing everything they could to achieve parity on the XB1,by the time they got xbox one to same position as ps4 the game probably went gold more or less.

On a purely technical level, the game doesn't strike me as being a particularly taxing effort, so it would have been pretty embarassing if the Xbox One wasn't on par with where Bungie set the bar with the PS4 version. Bungie know what they're doing more than most, so if anyone was going to get some decent legwork out of XB1, it was them.

Still wish it was 60fps though... or had a PC version... but the game is definitely fine as is.

the people saying

"lol at the comments about parity, this is a cross gen game"...

take a look at Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes..also a cross gen game, but there are still differences between Xbox One and PS4, because they have different specs..

After hearing such lukewarm impressions on the game itself, a gimped PS4 version does not exactly encourage me to buy the game.

The festival of hyperbole is about to start! Destiny is a cross-gen game, so if anything, blame the PS3-Xbox360 old carcasses for the game being gimped...
