Digital Foundry vs Metro Redux

Who ate 900% of all the pies?

Can't really say much since I played the PC version on my mega ultimate computer. But I'm really glad that they updated the xbone's resolution to 912p. It may be incremental, but it's better than 900p. too bad I thought the games were horrible, so I won't get to try this in all it's 912p greatness.

Glad to see 4A Games concentrating on a rock solid framerate regardless of the resolution it's running at. That's something I've learned to appreciate more and more over the years, framerate > resolution. Then again that's why I tend to play on PC mostly these days, got my copies preordered. Can't wait. (especially as I never got any of the DLC)

This is why most of the technical talk should be out the window when it comes to consoles. I bet the pc versions smoke the current console versions.

Bullshit. I enjoy the console gaming experience a hell of a lot more than I do my current PC gaming experience.
Just because there's a platform out there that that could technically 'smoke' the console games in terms of visual quality, does not mean that this is not a discussion worth having. They are completely different platforms.

It felt like nobody was talking about this release, to the point that I started to question if it was really coming this year, and suddenly the last few days there's all this news.

Only played some of the first one on 360 because I just had an old Mac at the time, and while the game seemed great the technical issues really got in the way of my enjoyment.

But this looks like it will be genuinely playable on PS4.

Obviously. I quoted the person above for a reason, especially if they were implying that the PS4 version was running 1080p/unlocked fluctuating frame rate i.e Tomb raider/Infamous/etc. The article has given the impression that its rock solid across both platforms, so I would rather go for the one that is 1080/60.

That truly rock solid 60fps is fantastic on both consoles, big fan of 4A's commitment to that, especially on the Xbox One.

I'm at the point where I am totally fine with 900p games going forward so long as it means solid frame rates. No way in hell would I sacrifice that locked 60fps for a small boost in resolution for this game, 4A made the right call.

It's pretty clear you're using this thread to make yourself feel better about your console purchase. Don't worry, you're Xbox One was worth it.

Too bad, somehow fails to the point of making a "remake" then.

The game on Xbone runs at 900p@60fps when compared to the 672p@30fps that the 360 runs at, has much better graphics and a much improved first game and it's not worthy to be called a "remake" just because it isn't 1080p? lol.

If you keep saying it, it might actually become true!

So I'm watching the latest walking dead season on dvd because I borrowed it off a friend. I've normally watched the blu rays. What do you know. I'm quiet enjoying it quality wise. Not as crisp as the blu ray but I'm still getting the whole story. When I look back and talk about episodes I can't even remember the quality just what happened.

I will buy all multiplats on ps4 if they are the best version. It's not like xbox one users are losing out. There's so much hyperbole on here it's just embarrassing. Did you play ps3 last gen or just pc? Have you only ever accepted 1080p? Some people just focus too much on bullshit resolution and miss out on great games.
Oh god, not this again.

Im buying it on XB1, I wasn't implying anything about the PS4 version or anything on PS4.. All I said was if they had the choice between 1080p and fluctuating frame-rate or 900p and 60 without big drops, i'd rather they did the latter.

Not everything is console wars and digs at other platforms. It was a singular statement about the XB1 version.

If they can get 1080p and 60fps then great and its good for PS4 owners they have done that, definitive version, etc but seemingly for technical reasons/hardware limitations or whatever they couldn't on XB1 and i'd rather have frame-rate than resolution if theres a trade-off and 900p is fine with me.

Sounds like an incredible remaster. 4A Games are wizards. This is one of those games I feel good about buying day one to support those guys, especially knowing the difficulties they've had to overcome during development:

The entire 4A studio would fit easily in the (underutilized) gym at EA Los Angeles' offices. Yet Last Light's Metacritic score blows away Medal of Honor Warfighter. As undeniably fantastic as competitor BioShock Infinite may be, the team was given whatever resources they needed to make the title. At the same time, 4A's staff sat on folding wedding chairs, literally elbow to elbow at card tables in what looks more like a packed grade school cafeteria than a development studio.

When 4A needed another dev kit, or high-end PC, or whatever, someone from 4A had to fly to the States and sneak it back to the Ukraine in a backpack lest it be "seized" at the border by thieving customs officials. After visiting the team I wanted to buy them Aeron office chairs, considered a fundamental human right in the west. There were no outlets in the Ukraine, and our only option was to pack a truck in Poland and try to find an "expediter" to help bribe its way down to Kiev. We gave up not because this tripled the cost, but because we realized that the wider Aeron chairs would require spreading out people and computers, which would lead to extra desks, and that ultimately would have required bigger offices. Yes, really.

I truly enjoyed Far Cry 3, which deserved its great reviews. But how many times did Ubisoft Montreal lose power for hours or days during development? Power outages are the norm for 4A. All developers have deadlines, but I know of few that had to bring in construction generators to be able to work the weekend before final submission because an extra day meant missing shelf dates by weeks. Montreal is cold, but when it gets cold in Kiev it's different. That's because the government provides all of the heating through a central coal burning facility that pipes hot water to homes and offices. Unfortunately, it breaks down reliably a few times a year for a week at a time. Then 4A works in their parkas and struggles to keep their fingers warm in temperatures well below freezing. That is unless it snows and they get stuck home for a few days at a time because snow clearing isn't up to Western standards.

Not too thrilled by some of the changes they made tbh.
From an artistic perspective I mean, obviously

Alan wake was amazing at 540p. I thought it actually added to the game. That kind of gritty grainy look. I play it maxed at 1080p and sure as he'll looks crisp but it's not how I remembered on my big TV with surround sound

Aren't you the guy who was spitting pips because Driveclub had some jaggies?

I genuinely think this game looks really bad for a 30fps racer, an exclusive, with the hype it has had. I will just leave it now. Deffo not buying. Something to do with the foliage and track side detail/textures etc just looks way off and wrong. Then there's the jaggies. Car models and lighting looks nice but I'm really not feeling anything else. Hope it does well, but I would have killed for an exclusive next gen motorstorm, me and my mates played pacific rift and apocalypse a lot.

I bet it plays well tho knowing the pedigree, and the sound track will be immense, Sorry but I am out evolution unless it gets great reviews.

It's real hard to take your 'Just concentrate on the funs!' seriously.

Actually yes, it's like when I go back to old c64 arcade conversions and remember how much I was bitching about wonderboy having black skies, or some other game lacking shadows or parallax etc. but in retrospective that didn't make the experience worse.

Ah ok. I'm not trying to take anything away from it. I just would have been doubly impressed if that kind of physics was done on the fly.

And what animations are you referring to in the MGS games?
For example the clothing animations in the opening of Ground Zeroes are canned.

Apparently, Destiny, though I fail to see how Bungie got a ~50% increase out of a ~10% performance boost.

ms sent their crew there and is a 30FPS game, we have yet to see if there are going to be any visual compromise in the final product too

btw, i could never play it on my ps3 because it had a horrible screen tearing. will buy it when they put this up in the store

why do people keep saying 921p when it's 912p?

good on them for opting for frame rate over resolution

We have a very sizable dyslexic population on the board I learned today.

Prob not the whole story but it went from 900 to 912

Edit.. Beaten

I actually copy and pasted the 921p from the first post, so that's why everyone kept saying 921p instead of 912p. Blame the first poster!

Getting tired of these posts, it's nothing but thread derailing. "there exists something far better so all comparisons between yourselves are invalid" gotta love the silly narrative, technical differences between consoles are gonna be discussed no matter what can be achieved on a non fixed non console platform like the pc.

I think it is too heavily scripted compared to the first. You have an annoying AI companion with you for half the game that basically squawks at you in an awkward Russian accent (including customary BYLEYHYHs).
Indeed, I'd also add that the character redesigns aren't up to snuff either being made more cliché for mass appeal.

That said I still liked it, not as much as 2033 but I'll be getting both on PS4. This is how remasters should be done and at a good price (take note Naughty Dog).

I don't know what is more sad...JAYSIMPLE now playing the "it's all about the gameplay" card when he said that he won't buy DC because of the jaggies and the side track textures that felt off or you digging at this guy's post history to find this post from 3 months ago?

Great job to the dev team! I figured it would have ended up with a fluctuating framerate, but they seem to have got it nearly locked.

They all play the same game. Id say there's no real issue with having that discussion either, especially in a digital foundry thread.

In fact, digital foundry feels the same;
digital foundry said:
Some of the high-end options found on PC don't make their way across to the Redux - if tessellation is utilised, it's to nowhere near the same degree as the PC version for example, and extreme rendering options like super-sampling are obviously off the table too.

Not sweating it, I keep the Troll shotgun at the ready. I have an X1 too OptimusPayn3. Was planning on the X1 version, but I was unaware of the weird res they had to go with. Just going to stick with exclusives this gen apparently.

Find me a $399 PC that can perform like the PS4 and then we can ibclude, otherwise PC has no place in this comparison

Did you forget about the 300+ extra dollars you'll be paying to use the Internet on your console already? Come on now.

Let's not get into these silly cyclical arguments again, because then we will devolve into the same silly semantics.

And people were complaining that 4A didn't do enough to justify a 50% discount on PC for previous owners. This seems to be a complete overhaul of both games with 4A doing an outstanding job on the technical front.

May double dip in the future. We'll see.

What in that article screams major overhaul about Last Light beyond graphics / framerate boosts over the PS3 version? That's pretty much the only thing they touch on.

4A done good. Would love to support this, but I already have Last Light and 2033 on Steam. And I don't exactly have a hard time running them. The 2560x1440 resolution on PC is a smooth beauty with the GTX 780 Ti. :p
