[Digital Foundry] Xbox does not support 100GB disk due to VCR XBox One

I've searched and I didn't find this information and I thought is a curious piece of trivia. Even XBone S supports 100GB discs since is too a 4K BluRay player. But Alan Wake II in 2024 won't be complete in the disc version of Xbox to maintain backwards compatibility with the worst version of their most hated hardware that was launched in 2013. What? What you're saying makes no sense. Alan Wake II isn't coming to the Xbox One.

They kept XSX using same format because I guess cross gen releases would have XB1 game on disk and had to download XSX.

I am sure MS could have figured something out but they didn't really care. 4K UHD movies run just fine in it so it's only an issue with games.

Giant VCR shell that also had a giant external power brick.
I traded it in for the One X.
I never knew about this storage limit.
How much did MS save putting in a less capable CD reader?
It also had less capable RAM
And if I remember it was more expensive than the PS4.

Series X-only releases + updated firmware on those consoles to read from a BD66/100 disc should surely make it possible?

LRG can very well make it a 2 disc pack to remedy this.

Cyberpunk shipped on 3 discs, the third disc just for Phantom Liberty, for reference.

Microsoft could allow print 100GB disks for the console that already reads 4K BRs too

LRG making their physical release a 2 disc package is probably a much easier and feasible ask than asking MS to change a policy in place since 2017.

LRG are cheapos and all, yeah. But we're in 2024? Surely Sony had a similar policy about PS4 and change it for PS5. As they did in all the previous generations. It's not rocket science.

Why? it's just getting installed to the HDD anyway with updates being downloaded as soon as you finish.

The expectation is that this will contain the 'complete' game, including at least the first DLC. It's a nice thing to have all that in a single package.

Though, yeah, it will not have the second (the more story focused) DLC on disc. So this isn't a "Complete" edition in either case anyway.

This rarely happens these days, not to mention, rarely do you ever get the completed game with the day 1 patch.
