I don't think any other game nails HDR like GT7. Bloody incredible.

Also, darktide looks so good. It's blown my mind now it's in front of me. But I do have a 4090.

Looking forward to firing up horizon just as a graphics showcase.

Is it true that it run like shit on pc?

I mean you have a 4090 so you probably haven't noticed.

I was surprised god of war ragnarok is not there, so much of it is excellent.

Need for speed looks average.

I'd also disqualify games with performance issues

This shouldve been one of those years where DF shouldve grown a backbone and either simply refuse to do a Best graphics of 2022 or just have Horizon on there and called it a day.

None of the other games they had deserved to be on there. The title 'ANOTHER great year for state of art visuals' is hilarious because none of these games are state of the art. they are sub standard last gen looking games. Dying Light 2 made me laugh because its the ugliest game ive seen in years. With a downgrade so huge that it shouldve been easy to compare it pre downgrade and see just what this game wouldve looked like on next gen consoles. But no, it has ray tracing so Alex has to suck its dick. Portal RTX at #3 is flat out insulting. So what if they have new accurate RT lighting and some remodeled assets. it still looks like a PS3 game.

I feel like DF has lost their collective minds. TLOU Part 1 looks virtually identical to TLOU Part 2 but two years later, it is still state of the art? If HFW is state of the art, if demon souls was state of the art in 2020, how is TLOU Part 1 still state of the art? Especially when it looks worse than Demon Souls in every conceivable way.

GT7 also looks virtually identical to GT Sports which came out 5 years ago. Is 5 year old tech state of the art? They couldnt even get RT running during gameplay. 2 years after Miles shipped with RT on consoles. Hell, during that whole section, they showed gameplay and it looked so underwhelming they had to admit the environments look like crap.

These guys had Ratchet and Flight Sim to compare these games against. What game here has lighting as good as Flight sim? Not even HFW. What game here has that CG look of ratchet? Put Ratchet side by side with Fortnite and see just how much more Ratchet is doing.

Then there are the excuses. 'TLOU doesnt look that much better than TLOU1's cutscenes because they were prerendered'. Yeah, they were pre-rendered on 3 PS3s ducktaped together. we've seen their setup. the PS4 alone was 6-8x more powerful. the PS5 is literally 40x more powerful. Shouldnt we be expecting a bigger gap?

The excuses for GT7's environments were hilarious. Oh its realistic cities so they cant look as good as the fantastical setting of Forza Horizon. Forza Horizon is set on earth last I checked, not on James Cameron's Pandora. NFS is set in urban cities which look far better than GT7's urban cities which are track based not even open world.

Callisto is being number 2 just shows how weak this year was. Ten years ago, no one would even talk about this game it looks so generic. HFW takes a massive shit on every game on their list except maybe Plague's Tale which does look pretty in the scenes they showed, but every other game looks on par with games that came out years ago. They even say that NFS finally looks as good the NFS 2015 again. Yay?

Quite frankly, having Horizon share the spotlight with these games is insulting to Horizon and GG who went above and beyond despite having their hands tied to last gen hardware. The fact that they look so much better than other next gen only games is simply unacceptable. Just have Plagues Tale on there with HFW with NFS as an honorable mention and then spend the rest of the video criticizing how none of these games are state of the art.
It’s almost 2023 but you are winning the reward for most whiny post of 2022.
Jesus my dude. What the hell

I just love how GT7 presents itself. Even if it has some rough edges, the game really showcases the appeal of its subject mattter. Few games have that developer passion for a subject just shining through every corner of the game. But yeah graphically it wasn't really that much of a direct visible jump from GT Sport. Which is fair in some ways because fans did ask for Sport but as a mainline GT game.

Death Strandings HDR implementation on a proper 4k Oled is absolutely insane.

One of my favorite pictures simply because if you don’t have a proper monitor you can’t even tell wtf is going on in the picture but it pops on Oled.

Interesting that Scorn wasn't on the list. I think it's the only game that I played this year that had me stopping and admiring the scenery.
Yeah Scorn blew me away, the art design is at the top this year for me, love the UI design with the inventory screen as well, I love the whole game tbh, won’t forget about it anytime soon that’s for sure.
But it was a slow starter and with no hand-holding and no obvious plot it took awhile until I understood how to play it. The second area that started in the red desert was when I truly stopped and took in the scenery. 👌

Sure,, but for Ragnarok not to make top 10 is pretty funny considering how many cross gen games are on that list. GoWR is sitll one of the most visually impressive games released this year. I’d say its on the same level of Plague Tale but far better designed

what's so impressive about that screenshot? i'm not saying the game is bad looking but you could probably have picked a better one.

it's an average looking game. doesn't deserve top 10.

Fortnite on UE5.1 is damn impressive. running that maxed out with RTX it is gorgeous but i think you need a card like a 3090 Ti/4080 to see it at it's best. at 4K then definitely a 4080 or even 4090.

i'm sure Horizon FW looks great on PS5 but i don't have a PS5. from what i can tell in the screenshots it probably deserves #1. plus it's far more accessible since PS5 is easier/cheaper to get hold of than high end GPUs.

I really don’t agree with the number 1 game.

Horizon artistically is a nice game. But imagine it being rendered with the same visuals as A Plague Tale: Requiem, then it would look impressive. I played the game on ps5 and it’s at the end of the day enhanced look ps4 game but it’s still a ps4 game.

The list of the rest is fine. Maybe portal shouldn’t get that mention either as it’s just an rtx showcase
HFW visuals destroy A Plague Tale Requim ffs 😂 the PS5 version would blow up a PS4

it has some extra features but overall it looks fairly similar. put them side by side and see if many people notice the difference.

hell, id say gow ragnorak has a bigger visual upgrade over its predecessor than GT7.

Sorry but im not going to salivate over dynamic time of day and weather when Driveclub did it better in 2014. Good to see PD is finally catching up 8 years later though.

I'd say the rain droplets in Driveclub still better than any racing game to this day. But in terms of simulating actual weather, it is a bit basic. It doesn't affect the actual road surface, and barely affects the cars. The weather in GT7 is not on and off thing like you see in most games, if you drive on a huge track like the Nurb in GT7 some parts of the track have heavy rains and some part are actually sunny/dry, they simulate that in the game. The fact they were able to achieve this on a mid range card from early 2010s and an aging processor is an accomplishment in itself.
There's no catching up really, PD were able to achieved dynamic time/weather on 256mb video memory and 2006 era cell processor. Imo, PD is just playing safe, they want a good looking game that actually runs great on multiple hardware.

So we just had the worst year in gaming in decades and You want me to sing its praises in the graphics round up thread? Why?

What’s the difference between you and Alex who chose a 2007 game as the third best looking game because it now accurate lighting and reflections? Both of you are turning a blind eye to what’s been an extremely underwhelming 2nd year of the generation.

Worst year in decades if you only care about huge AAA offerings. This was a great year for games.
In fact PlayStation alone had worst years in the past 10 years alone.

God of War Ragnarok
Horizon Forbidden West
Callisto Protocol
Sifu
GT7
Elden Ring
Call of Duty Modern Warfare II
TLOU Part 1
A Plague Tale Requiem
The Quarry
The Devil in Me
Midnight Suns
Ninja Turtles
Xenoblade Chronicles 3
Stray

It hasn't been a bad year for everyone. Not even close if you ask me and I still have to play a few of these

Now you are making me want to buy this game
As someone who spent a lot of time with racing sims like iRacing and had the chance to work at the DTM Trophy on a Toyota GR Supra GT4 and also drove a Toyota GR Supra on Hockenheimring at a track day, I can tell you that the weight transfer of cars looks so authentic in GT7, it is such a joy looking these cars race. They feel amazing to drive, even with a controller due to the adaptive triggers. Visuals are also more down to earth, natural and authentic and not overly motion blurry, bloom and all these other strong effects.

Sadly the singleplayer campaign is lacking a bit and enemy AI isn't particularly good either, but the driving itself and online racing are hell of fun.

I'd get it if I were you. It's literally car porn with lots of info and history of cars, brands and manufacturers.

But but but the top two are cross-gen games?!

Last gen really holding us back huh guys? 🧐
Its not the graphics people are upset at last gen for, its the arbitrary speed and height limits for flight in horizon forbidden west, the slow swinging in spiderman, the loading hallways in god of war…things that have nothing to do with the visuals, and everything to do with the loading capabilites of the last gen systems

The Callisto Protocol is easily the best visuals I've ever seen in a game. High end gaming PC with the game completely maxed out - there's no better lighting, shading and character models. Now, if the game was as good as the visuals, we'd be in for a treat.
Not when tlou1 and 2 exist. Nope.

I love you man but that attitude is not helping anyone.
I agree the year was subpar but graphics were quite fine. It was still somewhat crossgen but great looking anyway.

In fact crossgen might be the last chance we get good looking games at 60fps

How many indies are on this list? I thought we were in the graphics thread. No one gives a shit about indies here.

With how much noise naughty dog made about the graphics of The last of us part 1, you'd have thought it would be on the list.

Currently playing it as I bought it on their sale but damn I regret it as the graphics are not what I expected.

It is on the list though…

Was it in the honourable mention? Hmmm I watched the other day but don't remember it being there. 🤦

I've just started the remake remake today.

Some parts are fine and look as good as 2 but some bits look rubbish.

Non performance sharpens it up much better though so when I buy it for pc in about a year, I imagine I'll think differently at real 4k and much higher fps.
