DiRT Rally (console) - Review Thread

I'm SO so happy that someone's finally went and made a legit rally game again. All these official WRC titles and things like Sebastian Loeb always try and fail because they try and cater to everyone.

Not played WRC5, but I think you are doing SLR a disservice, it's way more of a sim than many people give it credit for.

Pre ordered today, one for me on ps4, and one for my old man (70yrs young) on XB1...the old guy actually has a wheel and I dont.

We need to do league on GAF

I hope not, I hope you dont see other (ghosts)

why not? you can turn off collisions incase you catch someone. It's more realistic this way, granted I don't mind if everyone starts at the same time but I feel It adds a different dynamic to the rally, where the first car might have the pressure off since it isn't chasing any time but the last car will have the advantage of having a target time but will have more pressure on the driver.

Uhm you always find assholes who are in the way (on purpose) and ghosts distract me. I need to be fully concentrated when I drive on high speed.

Can't wait for this. It looks so good and finally a real Rally game.

So many people here not acknowledging Sebastian Loeb Rally as a real Rally game, you make yourself sound like "fanboys" of a game you haven't played yet, defending it against a game you haven't played neither.

Maybe some here just didn't know about SLR, but it's still kinda dismissive.

I'm gonna download the demo of Sebastian Loeb Rally now to qualify myself to comment on the quality of both games.

Been waiting for a Steam sale of this, but now am undecided which platform to go with...

21:9 or comfy couch?

SLR just released to pretty mediocre reviews, whereas DR released to much better ones. Pretty understandable that people are excited about DR more. Also review excerpts for SLR like this don't help: "You can have the finest stage selection, the most comprehensive car list, but it counts for naught if your handling is so fundamentally limp. Milestone seems to have been caught between the two extremes offered by its contemporaries, attempting to land somewhere between the generosity of Kylotonn's WRC 5 and the hard edges of Dirt Rally."

Also... this is a Dirt Rally thread??

Really looking forward to this and pleased it's reviewing well. Managed to bag one of them G29 wheels from curry's for £99 so can't wait to give it a try out with DiRT.
No doubt will be finding the hedge bottom many times!

Absolutely, but treating the other game(s) as if they weren't there or as if they were too arcady or watered down to such a degree that they aren't "real rally games" is unfair and I felt like calling that out.

Are you saying I'm off-topic or that it's cool to disqualify rally sims in here as long as they aren't called DiRT? (rhetorical question)

I just tried the SLR demo for an hour and if someone would just buy one rally game I'd 100% recommend them DiRT Rally over SLR, but it's definitely not a watered down sim or arcady and the FFB felt really good and responsive, but I don't want to deliver a review here.

How is the difficulty compared to the previous games? Been out of the loop with DiRT Rally but did they go the full sim route this time around?

The previous games had JUST the right amount of realism for me.

Bad news - Dirt Rally has gone substantially more simulation based and with a substantial difficulty increases over the previous games, which seems to alternately be referred to as both frustrating and rewarding. Mileage - no pun in intended - will definitely vary, but I'd certainly count on it being harder than Dirt 3.

Nothing like the previous Dirt games tbh. Think Colin Mcrae games with much, much more realistic physics.

It's nothing like the older games, at all.

Not one bit, I can't stress it enough. It's a very sim oriented game this time around, but this quite honestly a very big positive for me.

It can be a difficult game, but once you know the ins and outs some, it becomes less daunting. And I'm someone that isn't very good at sims, but I can manage.

Very true, SLR is actually (discounting the reviews) a pretty decent rally sim, it's just a shame that it has to go up against the DIRT behemoth, there was only ever going to be one winner out of that fight.

Anyway, back on topic, 5 days to go!

Sebastian Loeb Rally.......come on! That game was always and always will be an inferior game!
But this may be my memories speaking! I loved my Colin McR games on my PS1

"Inferior"... that's a completely fair opinion. I just didn't like the "finally a REAL Rally game" thing, that's all. On the "always will be"... I don't know , the Codies were almost broke. Things like that happen and making a better Rally game than "no game at all" isn't so hard, more people would buy Milestone games, they'd get more money, hire more people and make better games. They're not incompetent, they are just very small and know how to size their content and focus their games considering the limited demand. They're passionate, but sadly not very ambitious... probably better though not to be too ambitious when you're launching not far off a DiRT Rally.

Sebastien Loeb Rally Evo isn't a fun game. It has its moments, but its handling is not very good. It's too bad, as the career mode and Loeb events offer a lot of gameplay and there was a lot of work put into that. But the fundamental gameplay is frustrating.

I didn't enjoy it all that much, and now loathe the idea of having to spend another 20 hours with it to beat its career. I'm a completionist and a masochist.

DiRT Rally's reviews are impressive. I was gifted the game, and need to check it out. I'm just worried it will be hard and not as forgiving as other DiRT games. I'm okay with a challenge, but just want to be able to beat it without getting incredible times.

I feel the same way. I just didn't find it very fun. I felt like I was fighting with the controls more so than I should. Granted, this just sinking hours into both demos (NA is Mexico by the way) and playing at a friends.

Sad, 'cause I love Milestone games usually.

Now WRC5 is a total guilty pleasure for me. I love that game. It's pure arcadish rally fun. It's so satisfying to just throw those cars around. I actually like the course designs too for the most part. Some are a little too muddy looking in certain lighting conditions.

Really looking forward to Dirt Rally next week.

Very excited. Preorder is in and the wait begins.

I can dismiss SLR just on the basis that they do not have multiple control input device support. This means the game detects only my T300RS wheel but does not detect my Fanatec Clubsport V2 Pedals. On PC that is.

Also no triple screen support. DiRT Rally has very minimal triple screen support but atleast it runs in triple screen mode. If only the side-screen fov was adjustable..

You'd probably like it even less, had your pedals worked. Maybe it's a still bugged demo, but shifting with the clutch engaged and leaving off the throttle will cause the rpms drop to zero more or less instantly - even in the Mini. We should probably be happy that Codemasters gambled on an existent market for a polished and pure rally game. And maybe their competitors should try early access as well and size/polish their game according to the interest(sales) unfolding over the early access period.

I'm honestly sorry for derailing this thread. I'll stop now.

Hmm... Still not sure if i should get it digital. It will probably be 10-15€ more expensive than a boxed version and the download is 40Gb (which is about 1/3 of my monthly download cap unless i download at night). But i feel that it would be nice to have this on my hd for quick access.

I'm on a long "staycation" so I pre-downloaded this on my Xbox. Looking forward to it.

Pretty jam packed month for solid looking titles. This game + Quantum Break + Killer Instinct + Ratchet and Clank + Star Fox for me.
