Disney has hired screenwriters Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal to write a remake of Tron, the 1982 Steven Lisberger film about a computer programmer who gets sucked into the parallel world of a computer program, reports Variety.

Klugman and Sternthal, who just wrote the historical epic Warrior for Gavin O'Connor to direct and Icon to produce, feel that the world has caught up with Lisberger's original concept, making it ripe for redo.

"We are contemporizing it, taking these ideas that were ahead of the curve and applying them to the present, and we feel the film now has a chance to resonate with a young audience," said Klugman.

Sternthal said the new conceit is that the computer programmer gets trapped in a cyberworld, so that the film can utilize the Internet.

The writers take the job as they near an end to writing Black Cat, based on the 1940s Harvey comic book character of a stuntwoman who becomes a vigilante on the streets of Los Angeles. Michael Uslan produces the pic to be directed by Chuck Russell.
Ugh. Why must people remake good movies? The only movies that should ever be 'remade' are ones that had good concepts but were poorly executed.

The original film was able to get away with campily misusing computer terminology. This remake will not.

Heh, I'll give it the benefit of the doubt.

It can't be worse than the Taxi remake from the footage I'd seen on TV

i think he's talking about phrases like "Kick his gigabits". It's been ages since i've seen Tron so i can't recall any cheesy lines offhand. Your Jurassic Park reference was wildly one-upped by all of Swordfish.

I was just trying to use something recognisable.

I don't recall any movie that used computers in a realistic manner. It'd probably be quite boring if it did.

Still, using the internet opens up all sorts of possible groan-inducing moments.

a remake??? are they nuts, have they lost their minds?
why not a sequel? TRON 20 years on.

of course, completely forget about the recent game's horrid story...

My thoughts on this..
NO NO NO NO NO

Dammit.

Such a classic movie... I was pretty happy when the released that Anniversary DVD a bit back... great commentary track. That light cycle sequence will always be high in my list of great movie memories.

No, no, no.

No.

(It's all about the Wendy Carlos score for that movie, by the way. One of the few synthesized film scores that's aged well.)

I thought it already been...The Matrix.

DISNEY.STOP.NO.FUCKOFF!

Tron is a classic...the world looks that way because that's the way that computers /videogames looked. If you remade it to represent today's computers, then the world inside would look pretty much like Shenmue or similar. Pointless.

It's fun reading these "movie remake" topics because the same response is repeated 100 times, usually to no avail is the end

Same could be said about much of the internet outcry against corporate activities. Most recently, G4's killing of TechTV.

I swear two things:
1:
Sternthal said the new conceit is that the computer programmer gets trapped in a cyberworld, so that the film can utilize the Internet.

This was the setup - more or less - to Tron 2.0, the movie. I guess Disney's trashing the whole idea of a sequel and just going for an out and out remake now.

2:
Tron is only good in that it's horribly, fore-headed slappingly "bad in a good way," moreso than most movies to come out of the 80s. And yeah, I'm including "The Wraith" in that equation. A remake can't do any worse, most people seeing it won't know an IP address from a DNS entry anyway. Shit, Law and Order gets away with IP addresses that start at 300.

Don't take this personally... but you can kiss my ass for defaming the wholesome goodness that is Tron. How old were you when it came out BTW? I'm curious to see if it's a matter of age difference that changes the perception of the movie. Oh and screw you for defaming the wholesome goodness of the Dodge M4S Turbo Inteceptor!

I think Tron sucks balls and I was 13 when it first came out. I have a good friend who glorifies the movie and talks about how it "changed his life" He's now into visual effects. You take it for what it's worth.

People who were ages 10-13 when Tron came out and hated it 'when it came out' need therapy.

;)

Tron launched a shitload of PC industry related jobs you heathens!

Just like Top Gun boosted the Navy for a bit... let me gues... you hate Top Gun too right?!?!?! DIE!!!!!

...Days of Thunder? Top Gun on the racetrack? Well... hell I don't know what it did. ;)

That Tron guy from the internet *needs* to be in this movie! :lol

I saw Tron for the first time a few months ago... Not bad, but horribly outdated! The Megaman BN anime and games do a better job of a "cyberworld".

whaaaat? Tron 2.0 was pretty much a perfect sequel to the original Tron.

It had the same campy story elements, incorporated new world technology without falling back on stupid ass buzzwords, and even had a few nerd jokes for the techies who understand how the things really work.

I don't know how you could enjoy tron's story and think 2.0's was weak. I thought it was great.

Top Gun was cool. Never saw Days of Thunder.

We had a running joke that Top Gun cast Tom Cruise in the same role for every subsequent movie he did after that.

"Colour of Money" -- top gun of pool players
"Cocktail" -- top gun of bartenders
"Rain Man" -- top gun in reaching through to autistic people
"Born on the 4th of July" -- top gun of vietnam vets

etc.
