Disney to lay off 28,000 employees as coronavirus slams its theme park business

While Disney's theme parks in Florida, Paris, Shanghai, Japan and Hong Kong have been able to reopen with limited capacity, both California Adventure and Disneyland have remained shuttered in Anaheim, California.

Damn sorry for the staff and the horrible lockdown policy in California. Free the people and open up the country!

Why not subsidise them for a few months with their vast wealth.

Cunts
Thats what unemployment insurance and covid payouts are for.

For any company out there generous to employees, but hit the shitter and eventually go broke, do any employees give the company back some money to keep them afloat or voluntarily take a pay cut? Never seen it myself.

Orange County and Anaheim and state legislators have been pressuring Newsom to open Disneyland.

He's refused.

Now people lost their jobs.

His is next. Recall time!

Meanwhile Disney CEO Bob Iger made 47million dollars last year.
Devil's advocate: he's in charge of one of the biggest entertainment companies on earth.
If you paid someone only $12/h to run Disney, do you really think they would take their job seriously since the position has no worth? And if you have an idiot in charge, then everyone is at risk of losing their jobs since it's not going to be successful....

The actual money a CEO makes is not the problem since the company as a whole was going to get the revenue anyway. But it would be more nice if we did see more Iwata-style leadership where being the head of company is seen more as family status and not just "appeal to shareholders".

hope all you assholes who pressured the world to shut down are happy.

a couple months of lockdown was fine. but now we are seeing the long term consequences of the media milking this covid cow and paralyzing everyone with senseless fear.

we have to end this shit now.

people who are scared of getting covid have to stay home and protect themselves, so we don't have tens of thousands of more people losing their jobs, effectively uprooting and changing the course of their lives.

it is not the responsibility of the rest of the world to protect you.

smh, this is so fucking insane

Damn.

Really fee for the people being laid off. Looking at how the US has dealt with the pandemic is insane.

Trump and anti-maskers have a lot of answer for. Now is not the time to play politics with people's lives.

Because people aren't cattle. Oh Covid must be a hoax to you, let people get infected again right? Cunt
Oh noes, the poor infected. Nobody sane cares about "infected" only. In Germany for example 266 people are in hospitals due to covid. Two hundred sixty six. (source: https://www.destatis.de/DE/Themen/Q...s/dossier-covid-19.pdf?__blob=publicationFile). And we have a population of over 80 million. So why should these businesses kept closed?
But yeah let's circle jerk about new cases.

What a moron you are. Health services have been overloaded around the world. While they've been dealing with this shit important life Saviing scans/treatments have also been put on the back burner while Covid cases were being seen too.
Isn't just about the deaths, a lot of infected people needed care.

Do you have Tourette?

Sentences usually ends with a period, not with "Cunt".
"Fuck" has become might popular as well.

Firing people is now treating them like cattle?
Firing people is creating the conditions for them to get Covid?

Would it be possible for you to make any semblance of sense?

You do charity with your own money.
Charity with other people's money is so cheap.

I find this only partially correct: CEO had lots of responsabilities and he should earn a lot if he's good in its work.
But I don't know if it's right a CEO can earn 1000 times their employees. Or, in this case, earn 1000 times when you have 28000 laid off.

How's trump responsible?

The EU is a mess, our numbers are worse than the US, is Trump responsible for that too?

I see that you are sick with TDS as well. I hope you get better one day.

This sucks.
I get that Disney isn't a charity but these are unusual circumstances and they should do whatever they can to retain the staff in my opinion.

You know shits bad when even fucking Disney has to lay people off. Hopefully these poor people find something else as soon as possible.

Disney makes billions in revenue and has to oversee multiple operations (i.e theme parks, movie studios, cruise ships, TV channels etc).

Again, to keep such a massive operation running, why wouldn't you pay the CEO top dollar so the company doesn't crash and burn to someone who is less skilled and interested in it?

If some guy who sweeps floors or flips burgers screws up his job, he can always just apply to the other thousand custodial or fast food jobs out there and not suffer any backlash.
But if a CEO makes just one mistake, he will be hounded by stockholders until he can promise to bring back any lost profits.

Thanks for telling us what you don't know.

Holy shit, that's a huge amount of people.

It's fucked up but it's also understandable...

How long ago did the parks close? If you consider we've been dealing with the pandemic for 7 to 8 months now, 28k employees on a dead business for that long is unsustainable.

Even if they bleed money from other sectors of the company, the bill will eventually come... What they did is, unfortunally, the safest line of action.

Poor people, though, hope they can get back on business soon.

what a retard. The economy can bounce back. There's no economy without people.

Fine, then shutdown forever until covid goes away, let's see the economy bounce back after that.

There needs to be a balancing act between saving lives and saving the economy.

This is why you can't close everything.
When they kept the Walmarts open during the pandemic, that should have signaled something was off about these "lockdowns".

Like, why did the shoe store have to close but the supermarket that packs 1000+ people at any time was allowed to do business? It was ridiculous.

Anti-maskers? Ha. Sweden hasn't masked and they are still fine. Masks are fucking bullshit. I say this as I'm on a plane right now using a retarded fucking mask. Someone a couple seats away started coughing. Do you really think a mask is going to save me from his germs?

Or we can just put people back to work by opening up and ending lockdowns. Cunt
Did you read the article - this isn't just California, there is low attendance in the open parks as well - and I bet they have had to give deep discounts to the people who are going.

I use to work in the character department at DL so understandably, a lot on my timeline are losing their shit about it.

During the summer, I had assumed the park would open back up right after the election but, yeah, doesn't look good for them.

Same here, every shop that has sold food, drink or hardware, has been open since the beginning. No issues whatsoever. Fucking governments are pricks

??? Walmart is a grocery store slash common goods store for many many Americans. It's the lifeblood of many small towns. They sell food medicine supplies garden shit hunting stuff everything. With COViD killing off so many mom n pop shops it's literally the only thing open for millions of Americans.

U have to be out of your damn mind to want Walmart's closed. Maybe some city dwelling elitist who doesn't understand how crucial the store is to many communities. Like I'm sure u gave this big a shit about whole foods too

Sweden's rate is still higher than its neighbours who did have a lockdown.

Im not sure what medical experience you have but maybe you should contact the CDC with your medical advice?

But Walmart has many other departments besides food and they were never closed.
Did they shut down electronics? Hardware? Fashion?

No. But why did the mom and pop stores have to close?

The problem is theme parks lose money unless running at a high capacity, shutting and firing staff is probably cheaper than having say 20% attendance. They are cutting jobs at Paris and Florida which have been reopened for quite some time, so this is just passing the buck so they can blame the state for the cuts, they are axing everyone from engineers to admins too.
