Display mode applications (for windows!)

my situation here is that no matter what i do, windows won't recognize my HDTV when i started using a digital DVI cable. Now my image is 400x better but i want to change to 1080i... however windows won't let me change it to that resolution ;( instead it will only allow me to change to 1080p.

The option was there before when using the analog cable (but never worked because of the really odd way of connecting it up)

So i'm wondering if there's any application that will FORCE the resolution for the desktop of a secondary display to 1080i ;D

Thanks :)

To the best of my knowledge it's not a Windows issue you're dealing with, it's the graphics card's display drivers that are the issue. What graphics card are you currently using and do you have the most up-to-date set of drivers for them? You may be in a rather sticky situation, though, as it is very unusual for PCs (and PC monitors) to run in interlaced mode, so there's not generally much support for compatibility with interlaced HDTVs in graphics cards. Given that you did have the 1080i support with VGA, though, you may have some chance in getting it to work with DVI. Whether that involves simply updating (or getting third party) drivers or some external measure, however, is something I wouldn't be too confident in answering.

i'm using GeForceFX 5700 with maybe half a year old drivers (updating now)

but an odd turn of events as it lets my LCD monitor do 1920x1080i which it doesn't support but it doesn't let the HDTV that does

now this is starting to bug me

now when updating the drivers it allows me to change the resolution to 1920x1080... but these guys... they're a funny bunch!!

it set my HDTV to it's native resolution of 720p and proceeded to scroll the display when i moved my mouse.

Wait, you mean that your HDTV runs at a native resolution of 720p? If this is the case, then, just as a matter of interest, why are you trying to output to it at 1080i? A 720p signal will look just as good, and won't use up as much of your graphics card's power in rendering. What exactly is it that you're trying to display, games? If so, I'd recommend sticking with 720p, it'll look just the same but with better framerates.

i've seen it run at 1080i resolution through the botched analog method. it looked a hell of a lot clearer than 720p I know it's less resolution because it's 30hz, but it doesn't bother me.

i wanted to see some 1080 videos in their proper resolution and these drivers aren't helping me

Considering that the TV is downscaling the 1080i image to 720p to begin with.. you will not be seeing those videos in their "proper resolution".

Do what the man says and put the videocard to 720p.

and this is why

ladies and gentlemen...

why i DONT upgrade nvidias shitty drivers

"your card does not support DirectX7 or later" - HalfLife2

Yeah. GeForceFX doesn't support DX7 my ass :p

I think you want a PC utility called Powerstrip. It gives you complete control over resolution, timings, etc., and has presets for the HDTV formats, including 1080i, which most newer video cards CAN support, and most modern CRT monitors WILL display.

I don't know if DVI even supports 'i' resolutions though, as its a digital connector. your analog one did because they are used with CRT monitors will also support interlaced resolutions as they get higher.

DVI was introduced for fixed pixel panels, so are progressive in nature.

If you think 1080i on your TV looked better, just use a VGA input.

DVI can support interlaced output if you have the right Catalyst or Detonator drivers for your video cards.

I think Cat 5.6 supports 1080i through DVI > Progressive component via a dongle with extended desktop for instance. Don't know about Detonator.
