Microsoft rolls out Windows 24H2 update

Like seriously, WTF is wrong with MS? Why was there a need to make dependencies for Recall baked in to file explorer?

I understand that they may want it for new “AI PCs” but having the prereqs in every Win11 install is fucking annoying as hell. And it gives yet another attack vector.

Oh and now they have semi-permanent OneDrove add/notification as well.

MS makes Linux look more and more interesting with every passing day.

Yes, it's getting really bad.
Windows 11 is becoming the worst OS ever made by Microsoft.
I haven't touched Linux in a decade, but it's getting very appealing.

More concerning is why authorities are doing nothing against it.
I would expect that at least the EU would be all over this thing.

An Antikythera DX-66.

I also have an i7-7600.

Intel CPUs also have performance improvements with 24H2, but I haven't seen any tests with 7000 series.
If you are on Windows 11 23H2, you will probably see some improvements, because this update is fixing bugs with this Windows version. If you are on Windows 10, you might see nothing at all.

Noice. Thanks.

So we all like this remaster of a 3 year old OS?
9 years old. It's still 10 under the hood, 11 was supposed to be a big update for 10 with the new Kernal and UI but manufacturers said it's easier to sell new machines with a new OS.

So it's more like Windows 10 service pack 3 or 4 or whatever

Is there a way to get the old detailed context menu back when left clicking the mouse? I hate the new simplified menu and no, making a second click to access it is not a solution.

Yes.
Save this as a reg file and execute it. Or use CMD.
Then restart.

reg file
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\CLSID\{86ca1aa0-34aa-4e8b-a509-50c905bae2a2}]
@=""

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\CLSID\{86ca1aa0-34aa-4e8b-a509-50c905bae2a2}\InprocServer32]
@=""

CMD
reg add HKCU\Software\Classes\CLSID\{86ca1aa0-34aa-4e8b-a509-50c905bae2a2}\InprocServer32 /ve /d "" /f

I’m curious what you need that isn’t shown? I’ve been using 11 since 2021 and can’t recall ever needing to access the detailed menu. Custom items added by apps seem to go to the main menu.

I still haven’t been offered the 24 update.

Doubtful...these unelected EU elitists are knee deep in Bill Gates ass (vaccination stuff, WHO etc) and they are currently going in hard on censorship and surveillance (Digital Service Act). "Recall" just fits in perfectly here imho. 🤷‍♂️

It's been a couple of months i remember having a difficulty with it. I suppose i can't get used to the new icons over the lines of text. After 20+ years of using them i can't just change now.

I also miss the taskbar menu. It just shows a single "taskbar settings" option now for some reason.

Wonder if Star Wars Outlaws is still broken, completely ruined my playthrough last month.

It was still crashing, i.e. exiting to the desktop with no error message from the game or entry in the Event log, when I tested v1.1.2 on Windows 11 Pro 24H2 Build 26100.2033 last week (was it last week or was that build 26100.1882?).

However, I have not tried the game since it updated to v1.2 but I am not holding my breath for this issue to be fixed which is why I haven't bothered trying it. Got so sick and fed up of the game crashing randomly, without warning, anywhere from several minutes after resuming a save up to, if I am lucky, an hour. It ruins my enjoyment of the game when I have to constantly save it manually 'just in case'. I've only once been able to exit the game of my own accord. I've had countless 'crashes'.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora does this too after I revisited the game post-Star Wars: Outlaws launch. Both games are by Massive, both use the Snow Drop engine and both have RT features that cannot be turned. These are also the only two games that behave this way on Windows 11 24H2 suggesting the issue is with the coding rather than Windows itself. I have played around 100 other games since installing Windows 11 24H2 back in early June 2024 with no issues, including Silent Hill 2, Black Myth Wu Kong, Epic Mickey Rebrushed and many, many others. Everything else works fine except for those two Ubisoft games.

Thanks, i'm saving this for when i actually install 11. I'm still clinging to 10 at the moment because of little things like this.

Same. I have a calendar reminder set for next August, but I'm kind of dreading it. Hopefully they push back the EOL date for 10 by another year or so. My OS works perfectly fine for gaming and I have zero interest in any of the new stuff they've added to 11. I just don't want to be without security updates.

Yep, EU needs to start looking at this once again. MS is asking for another multi-billion € fine. 🤡🤡🤡

While the Windows Update cache is quite normal and visible in tools like Disk Cleanup or Storage Cleanup, an odd bug in Windows 11 24H2 won’t let you purge the update cache or files.

Windows Update Cleanup 8.63GB

Disk cleanup and Storage settings attempt to remove the update cache files, but they don’t work, as the Windows Update cleanup cache continues to take up to 8.63GB of storage.

Windows Update 8.63GB cache in Windows 11 24H2

Already checked on my PC, and the file is there and can't be deleted.
FFS Microsoft, fix your stupid OS, once and for all.

Valve please release us from this nightmare and support kernel level anticheat

That is not up to Valve, it's up to Linux.
And it's a good thing that Linux protects it's kernell like this, to make the OS perform better and have less issues with instability.
We just recently had a very good example of why that is a very bad idea, with the Crowdstrike debacle.

I forgot to turn updates off and now the 24h2 thing is scheduled on restart..anyone know how to cancel that or is it already too late? I disabled Windows Update in services.msc but it's still scheduled to happen.
Edit: nvm I figured it out. Just follow these steps if the same thing happened to you:
  1. Press Win key + R and type services.msc, find "Windows Update" and double click -> change from manual to disabled and press OK
  2. Open your file explorer and go to C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download. Mark and delete everything, may take some time.
  3. Press Win key + R and type gpedit.msc this time. Under Computer Configuration go to Administrative Templates, then to Windows Components, scroll down to Windows Update
  4. Double click on the last folder, "Manage updates offered from Windows Update" and select the last option, "Select the target Feature Update version"
  5. Now simply click on Enabled, on the 2 fields below type Windows 11 and 23H2, click OK and restart your PC.
Afterwards check if the Windows Update in services.msc (point 1) is running again, if not change it to manual again and click on start. If needed do another restart though I don't think you need to. If you let the Windows Update check for updates again, everything should be green and up to date.

I'll stay on 23H2 for a while longer, especially now that I've heard it may cause performance problems on my 12th gen Intel CPU. Fuck that noise.

Can someone explain why the 24H2 update is not showing up for me. Ive tried every trick in the book, but I am still stuck on 23H2. I have an AMD system so its makes 1000X more sense to get 24H2....or does it?

Try using the ISO or the Media Creation Tool to make the upgrade.

I can do that for sure, but why isn't it available in the usual way?
The update is rolled out in waves. Either you where not yet in one of the update waves or you have something that is known to make problems and the update is blocked for you. Some Western Digital SSDs causing blue screens for example and as long you don't update the SSD firmware you won't get the update.

Wow. AMD gets a performance boost with 24H2, Intel gets a kick in the nuts. WTF is Microsoft doing these days?

Ever since they fired the Q&A team, Windows has been a shit show.
Most of their updates have bugs, ranging from just annoying, to downright breaking important things.
They now consider the user as the beta tester.

I've installed 24H2 on all my machines at home without any issues now

Do not use the Windows Update method or the Windows Installer Assistant they take like 2-3 hours

Instead use the Media Creation Tool to make a USB drive installer or download and mount the ISO then it install in like 20 minutes

The update still hasn't come up for me either.
I used the tool to create a installable usb drive but I'll save that for next month when I upgrade to either arrow lake or a 9800x3d with a fresh install.
For now I'll just wait and see if it pops up.

Yeah I’ll play around with it for a little while and then do a fresh install of a 9800X3D is worth upgrading to over my 7800X3D.

Yep, between no QA, eviscerated support and the 18 months contract rules no wonder their development is shit. 💩
