OK, never done this, but I've started ripping stuff out of my Tivo. At the moment I can burn DVDs, which are great quality, but an hour is taking 1.5GB. Not practical for archiving Season 5 of the West Wing.

So I'd like to shrinkydink them, but still retaining good enough quality to play through my TV.

So any guidance on easy divx/xvid creation? Ideally I just want to set it up and leave it. Don't mind fiddling with settings if I can just save them and use them as a template next time.

Source would be 720x576 PAL MPEG2, approx 1.5GB per hour. It'd be already edited so just needs converting.

cheers!

Haven't dabbled in video editing in a while, but TMPGEnc should be able to handle what you are looking to do no problem. Worked great for me convertin divx to DVD video. Do a google search for it.

That's the opposite of what mrklaw wants.. TMPGEnc is for converting to MPEG-1 / MPEG-2.
TMPGEnc can be used to encode divx/xvid in AVI files as well as MPEG-1/2, assuming the VFW codecs are installed, you can also setup a neato jobs list.

However VirtualDubMod may be a little bit better for this kind of thing as the filters are a little more functional than TMPGEnc's, the Job control is also tops.

is there any *really* easy way to do this? eg a wizard or somesuch?

Ideally I'd like to open a .ty file (tivo format) and press 'go'. I don't mind setting preferences once, but not subsequent times.

All these things are like

1) use tool a to convert to format x
2) load format x into tool b and strip out the gromits
3) patch the gromits with flangetool
4) load whirlygig and engorge your previous gromits
5) turn around touch the ground
6) press go

For some presets (TV, movie), surely there are sweet spots for 'normal' people. Gordian knot almost gets there with the 1/2 CD, 1CD targets, but then you go off on 17 different mini quests to get things set up.

Welcome to the world or video compression mrklaw :) unfortunately a lot of the time it’s not just a one step process, and when dealing with exotic file formats the problem can be even more complex, don’t stress though all you really need to do is demux the MPEG-2 video (and the audio) from the .ty file using a tool like TyDemux and open them in VirtualDubMod, choose your compression settings (xvid/divx etc) and go, it’s really not that hard.

Thanks Gir, I'll get there eventually. Maybe :)

Is TyDemux included in the TyTools application? Thats what I'm using to create the DVD VOB files, so it'd be handy if I could avoid all that and go straight to demuxed files and into Vdub (whatever demuxed files are)

I guess the problem is that these tools are all for people that know what they are doing. Its not like CD ripping where they realise some people don't care, they just want a good end result.

No, TyDemux is part of TyStudio, but since you are making VOB files just use those, VirtualDubMod can open them fine :) and the good thing about that is the audio stream will be in the same file and you wont have to add it manually from the stream menu.

(VirtualDubMod can be found here: VirtualDubMod FileList)

Download AutoGordianKnot (GordianKnot for newbies) from Doom9 then check their guide. It's pretty easy. Xvid is superior so use this.
