DIY Perks — Building the WORLDS FIRST PlayStation 5: Tablet Edition

My god, i can only imagine the heat from this thing. Going to give it a watch.

Edit: Haven't finished watching, but this YouTuber is damn good. Wonder if something like AirJet could be utilized here.

Airjet definitely wouldn't work - the guy in the 'portable' PS5 video says he needs to remove 200W of heat, hence two massive heatsinks, three fans and a load of pipes. The Airjet thing only removes 5.25W of heat.

Good point. Wonder if it could be scaled up in the future.

I'd love something like that with an HDMI out option.
I don't think the build cuts any port off the mboard so HDMI out shouldn't be an issues.

Edit: What's interesting is that nothing he did (minus the screen) should up the cost all that much for Sony. So they really could have had a smaller PS5 slim revision if they really wanted it.

The main thing would be the external power supply which, honestly, wouldn't bother me that much.

Not a big deal. Folks have it with laptops and everyone seems ok with that. I mean gaming laptops have humongous bricks and unlike those, people wouldn't be walking around with a PS5 Super Slim in their backpacks.

I agree. I'd happy take an external power supply in exchange for a PS5 in a form factor I could carry around in my laptop bag.

oh yes that guy.
The king of ugly and pointless mods

That cooling solution it pretty genious. Didn't know there are blower fans with uni-directional airflow. To combo three and have two massive chunks to the side and made it pretty quiet is quite a feat of engineering. The guy even nickel plated his own custom heatspreader. If only he made it with a HDMI out, this would've been perfect.

At least I'd consider to pay the asking price of a PS5 to get a professional version of what he made, not what Sony made. (FYI: the price of a PS5 here is the equivalent of: us$ 720+)

Isn't that the guy that creat... Ahh, yes. It's him.

Hia PS5 Slim version

Ohh, and don't worry about the cooling and power supply. It's conveniently stored in this massive thing behind the desk so it's REALLY NOT BIG OF A DEAL

You weren't here for the xbox 360 external psu debacle that ensued I guess

Some amazing stuff here, tbh.

I would buy it because I like it, I like the single cable plug and play configuration. That being said, he mentions in the video that he wonders why console makers didn't execute on this concept yet. I think the answer is very simple.

Cons:
Too big and heavy for a handheld
Too small compared to a regular tv
You do need an external power supply at all times, making it almost as easy and the same as having a PS5 and a big screen tv next to you.
An actual tablet runs on batteries for a reason (portability)

Pros:
Somewhat portable as long as there is a power outlet nearby and you don't have the convenience of having an actual much bigger tv nearby.

If you could somehow have this battery powered and remove the screen you could strap it to back and use it with PSVR2 ghostbusters style for cable free VR.

The fact it was external had people come out with some very strong opinions right here on gaf
Which I never understood. A ton of retro consoles have been ruined by leaking PSU capacitors. Really wish say Saturn had an external brick. Would be so much easier to fix.

same
Not everything has to be easily replaceable, but having some parts swapable if damaged seems wise especially long term. And an external brick with the gigantic size of particularly the PS5 would save quite a bit. Which was also already true for the PS3. Hide at least part of the volume behind your furniture. I would have made the disc drive an entirely sepearate thing too, just plugged in via one standard USB port and not include it at all in the design. Allowing it to be used in PS6 and after, and allow any BR drive to begin with. As far as I understand the PS3 would not be able to read the latest BluRays, but in essence we could have just kept its drive and live with one, two or three install discs and one game disc for the same double, triple or quadruple layer capacity. At least use that drive for two gens.
