Do publishers have too much power?

force push the doodoo rock
Well, do they?

We get sequels for almost every game that sells more than 50 copies it seems.

Micropayments are on the horizon and im sure if it sells they will be all over it like white on rice.

Also the "special edition" releases that are just some extra video features and a sorta different case for 5 to 10 dollars more. Doesnt anyone else think that these half ass special editions are retarded?

Games only being targeted at a couple of interchangable audiences.

The abuncance of "genre" titles (war, Guys with guns, guys with swords). Did you guys realize before the winter 3 viet nam titles came out within a month and a half of each other?

Do you think perhaps the increasing cost of game development is because of a push by publishers to put tons of glossy shit into games in order to get a quick sale?

Would gaming be different if it wasnt for the crappy way the business is set up?

Is there any way to CHANGE the way the business is set up? Developers can't afford the cost of paying for game development themselves, so they have to rely on outside investment. If someone is taking a risk in investing in your company, they are going to want to have some say in what you do.

Mmmm, i dont think we will ever get rid of the mega publishers, but i think eventually we will have design houses break off from these publishers and do their own things.

I mean, we basically see this with first party publishers and some odd 3rd parties (namco hometek for one)

And as for the money thing, publishers dont automatically mean money for the dev house. they can run your dev house in to the ground (y helo thar bullfrog) for no good reason.
