Do these old games still hold up today?

So I got carried away and bought too many games... Now I'm trying to take out a few from my back log. What I'd like to know is, are these games as awesome as people say if you compare them to modern day games in their genres?

Example: starcraft, I know it's awesome but some think it's great for its time and not anymore and others probably think otherwise. So I don't know if I should bother with the single player campaign (I know I'll be slaughtered online) or just get other popular RTS games that came out after it.

And I have so many RPGs to play that any B ones just aren't worth the time honestly.

Some of the games I got...

- Starcraft
- Fallout
- Fallout 2
- Planescape: Torment
- Diablo
- Diablo II
- Baldur's Gate
- Baldur's Gate II

I'd say they're all still worth playing. But you definitely need to play Diablo before Diablo 2, and Baldurs Gate/Torment before Baldurs Gate 2. The older ones have slightly clunkier interfaces than the newer versions, but in terms of story and core gameplay, they hold up with the best of em.

Starcraft has been clearly surpassed as RTS( I would play Dawn of War instead any time) and I would find ankward to come back to any Fallouts. Diablos haven´t aged well, but if you like that type of mechanics, I think you will enjoy them.

Baldur´s Gates and Planescape are a big yes!

I'll not mention the RPGs in that list, so I can avoid the 3-page gushing rant, and say this:

Starcraft: Brood War is still the most well-balanced, fleshed out and refined RTS to ever be released. It is perfection in a genre and the definition every other game is held to. Nothing comes close to it.

Diablo 1 and 2 hold up really well imo, and you should definitly play both. Both are some of the best games ever made and the gameplay never gets old, plus the presentation and story are second to none in the genre.

Skip Baldur's Gate and play everything else (but be aware that BG2 and Diablo II are both major timesinks). Play D1 before D2--it'll only take you a few hours to clear the game once. By contrast, Diablo II could easily eat 100+ hours of your life before you know it--as old as the game is, it's still pure gaming crack.

As for completing Starcraft's single player mode with all three races--40 hours, maybe? It depends on how much prior experience you have with RTSs. (It's been a long, long time since I last played Starcraft, though.)

- Starcraft yes
- Fallout definitely
- Fallout 2 definitely
- Planescape: Torment hell yes
- Diablo eh, not really
- Diablo II yes
- Baldur's Gate yes
- Baldur's Gate II HELL YES

also a big screw you to those saying skip BG.. BG2 is definitely better, but BG1 + TotSC is still an awesome game and story.

starcraft is a wonderfully balanced strategy game that will hold up until the end of gaming as we know it

Yeah exactly. Is chess obsolete? Nope.

Starcraft is still the best game ever made.

There still hasn't been a single RPG released that has matched Fallout 1 or 2 so they definitely have held up well to say the least.

bah this thread is a failure, I wanted to take games off that list! :lol

I'll just probably go through them as fast as possible, just playing the single player once and nt messing around too much with expansions/mods/whatever.

Torment aged horribly, since you can't play at any resolution other than 640x480 it looks terrible compared to modern games. I'll have to say the same for Baldur's Gate 1 and Diablo 1. Starcraft, well, the gameplay packed much punch at the time but nowadays it's only mediocre, easily surpassed by many modern games in every department.

My advice is to play both Fallout games, Diablo 2 and Baldur's Gate II. They still look fine graphically and are exceptionally fun. After these, play Torment and if you can stand the graphics, you'll love the game ;)
