Do we expect Splatoon to be the next major Nintendo I.P.?

That's going to take a little longer, I'd wager. Right now:

Japan: ~500k retail + digital
US: ~600k retail + digital

I have no EU numbers but unless they are in the same ballpark, it's going to take a little while to get to 2 mil.

As of June 24th, Splatoon has sold over 230k in Europe and over 20k in Australia/New Zealand.

Oh, we're doing comparisons?

Let's see...

If it was released in 2009 on the Wii I think there would have been some notable potential.

As it stands I feel it will at best be an above average niche game for them a la something like Fire Emblem.

They needed to be launching IPs like this when they still owned the market if they really wanted to capitalize. At this point I'm not sure they'll ever have a notable home console again.

I feel pretty good about this one. Fire Emblem: Awakening did 1.76 million, and Splatoon doesn't seem to be there yet, but it's plausible will land around that area.

It doesn't seem super likely to be a 3.5-5+ million seller like Smash, Mario Kart, NSMB, or Super Mario 3D World though unless they make it the standard bundle game for a year.

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.

Where's you get 600k in U.S.?
It's not even 400k retail, I may have missed it but where did you hear it has 220k+ digital?

I would consider these to be very solid numbers for a new IP on a console in the WiiU's situation.

To be fair, the 3DS has a bigger install base, but you have a point with the other Wii U comparisons. I can see Splatoon hitting 2 million, but Nintendo would have to make the Splatoon Wii U bundle a regular thing for it to get within viewing distance of the likes of MK8 & Smash.

Would Splatoon be a TPS franchise, or would it branch out into rollerskating + graffiti gameplay
It'll definitely branch off to some spinoffs, like a rhythm game with Callie and Marie on handhelds.

The main series will likely stay on consoles, with a straight sequel on NX still focused on online multiplayer. However, I'd love to see as well an open world 3D platformer/adventure game that plays with the ink/squid mechanics.

This. Though if the NX really is a platform with both console & handheld variants that share most of their games, they might as well release Splatoon 2 on both (assuming the handheld is up to the task).

Actually that was a type from mobile! It should be ~500k for both, lol. As of the last NPD it was ~455k. I'll correct my mistake!

Better late than never. Nintendo got super complacent last gen, and now are in pure panic mode while everyone else got super complacent. X_X

Since Nintendo stated it sold 455,000 between May and June, it means it sold at least 55,000 units on US eShop.

There's also a pretty clear different between "next major IP" and just "next successful original IP." As it stands I wouldn't classify it as the next major IP simply because it's too soon to determine. Animal Crossing certainly became that "next major IP" after a while. Pikmin never did. So it stands to reason we'll need to wait quite a few years.

Splatoon's already outsold the lifetime sales of Pikmin 1 on Gamecube at this point.

That's really not saying much. With Splatoon you're talking about one game. Is it an IP? Yes. Is it a series? No, not yet. And if we're measuring success by its sales or by some other factor is still to be determined.

I think you could say it will definitely be an IP they continue with. It sold well on a struggling platform, so that says a lot.

It's a blast to play and I think they have a great new IP on their hands.

Splatoon has amazing potential as a franchise in general, not just a shooter. Those inklings are amazing designs that can work in a variety of ways.

I would love a Platformer.

Splatoon is too good and viral to land that low when all said and done. 2 millions is a sure bet, 3 millions is plausible.

Yes but Pikmin have been trying for over a decade, It's just such a shame that it hasn't grown into a huge IP by now :/
Trying for a decade? Nintendo pretty much killed pikmin. They released the first two on Nintendo's 2nd most unsuccessful console only to wait nearly 10 years and release it on the most unsuccessful console.

What was Nintendos last IP that sold so well with the very first Game?

I assume Pushmo? At least, it's sold well enough to justify three sequels.

It probably hasn't sold as well as Splatoon overall, of course, but when you factor in the difference in development costs, it's perhaps comparable.

Yea ok, Pushmo is a good answer.

I really hope that Xenoblade X will be successfull in the West so Nintendo will create more big IP's.

I will do my Part and buy it Day 1 ^^

I hope so. Game is fun and accessible to people of all ages. But there's not really a character or mascot in the game with enough personality to sell people on.

That's surprisingly low considering how people act like it was such a massive success.

It sold 1.79m copies

It's the biggest selling FE game to date in Western territories. It's also a SRPG on a handheld. Nowadays, how many of those sells over a million in the West?

Why do people ask for more platformers? nintendo has enough.

This game is really a blast and i'm really sure they'll release a sequel on the new consoles.

I've been trying to decide between this and The Witcher 3 for like the last 2 months now. At this point I may just grab both.

I love shooters of all types but I have a special place in my heart for ones like TF2 and PVZ:GW. I guess I find the cartoonier, more non-traditional ones to be pretty fun, especially in conjunction with great mobility options, like the scout in TF2. This game seems to be right up my alley.

Both games are essential. Is not a get this over this situation; get both.

You should grab both - my Games of the Year

I'm planning to soon, maybe by the weekend. I have Bestbuy GCU and a $20 rewards cert. At that point I may as well finally pick up Majora's Mask 3D along with those to push Paypal credit over the $100 mark, giving me 6 months to pay those off haha. I'm gonna be busy!

Which platform have you played TW3 on? PS4 is my primary but the PS4 version having the stuttering/double-buffering issues that the Xbox version doesn't (well, until that new patch...) makes me a little unsure. I may wait for the next patch before fully diving in but it'll give me time to install and update, etc at least.
