Do we expect Splatoon to be the next major Nintendo I.P.?

130k? .... With the first week usually being the biggest week for games lord that's terrible. I suppose if you compare it to Wonder 101 anything looks less like a flop.

135k in 2 days

Pikmin 3' first month (almost a full month) was 105k.

The Order 1886 sold 200k in the first month on a much bigger install base.

And you have no idea what it will sell after the first two days and how much frontloaded the game is, but I guess there is still place here for some crow in June.

No no no, you don't understand. It's a bomb because it will sell worse than Wonderful 101. If it passes that then it will bomb because it only got on the #5 ranking of the charts. Then it bombs because it didn't reach 1 million sales in the first second of release. In other words:

Please, continue talking out of your ass. I can't wait until Nintendo updates their million sellers list so all of the Mertroid fans who are spreading the narrative that "TROPICAL FREEZE BOMBED" will shut the fuck up.

They just did this a couple months ago.

DK games also have legs, which Metroid games don't.

After waiting eight years for a return visit from their favorite video game heroine, a quarter million Nintendo GameCube(TM) owners in North America purchased the hit title Metroid(R) Prime in its first week of availability.

Uh-huh.

If you're going back as far as Pikmin, you'd have to exclude:

- All non-EAD studios (Wonderful 101, Xenoblade, The Last Story, Pandora's Tower)
- Portable titles (Steel Diver, Codename STEAM)
- Download titles (Pushmo/Crashmo, Sakura Samurai, Harmoknight, Dillon's Rolling Western)
- Non-character based IPs (Wii Sports, Wii Music, Nintendogs, etc)

Not saying those are all major IPs, or even internally developed in some cases, but they are properties produced and owned by Nintendo that have been developed since Wii. I'm probably missing some.

Yeah, marketing is a problem. Nintendo very often doesn't seem to know who is actually buying and playing their games. A good example of that is failing almost completely to show off the multiplayer in Devil's Third.

All those games, outside of Wii Sports, Wii Music, Nintendogs and, maybe, Xenoblade, were poorly advertised and Nintendo didn't cared to cultivate them at all, which is a shame, especially for The Last Story, which had potential to become a solid JRPG IP, given the talent behind (Sakaguchi and Uematsu?), but they weren't really interested to invest into it. It wasn't even published by Nintendo is US, to begin with. Splatoon would probably join that list if they didn't try any effort to promote it.

Are people arguing Nintendo should have released a new Metroid on Wii U instead of Tropical Freeze because Metroid sells more?

Because if this is the case, regardless of what the actual numbers are, you must keep in mind a 3D Metroid on Wii U would probably cost a lot more to produce than Tropical Freeze, regardless of its quality.

Also Nintendo released plenty of new IP since Pikmin, but people mean new IP like Splatoon and not like Pushmo or Art Style or Chibi Robo.

Splatoon 2 would be a reason to get the NX for me. Such a well made game.

It has been an amazing year for GAMEPLAY. Hotline Miami 2, Bloodborne, Splatoon. WOW!

Evidence posted by others looks pretty damning to me. I don't understand why having the console have variance in genre's is like the devil to some people. If you want DK, SMB to keep going on, if you want a continuation of your platformers in the future, it is in your favour if Nintendo do what they must to have the console succeed and part of that, in this current market is having a good range of genre's and aesthetics and gameplay types.

DK is a fine game sure, but the exact opposite of what they needed then and probably still not what they need now, though its probably too late for the Wii U.

My point was that TF did so bad that it couldn't even outsell the most polarizing entry of a lesser-selling series like Metroid. I didn't think that would hit a raw nerve with some people (Gonzo).

DK sells better than Metroid, so it's not unreasonable to consider TF's sales bad for that reason.

Add Duck Game and Witcher 3 (yes I love the gameplay in this)/and you're right.

I have not heard of Duck Game, but it looks interesting. Witcher 3 is fun, but I am not a huge fan of the combat, so I think it pales from a pure gameplay perspective.

It still doesn't address my point: it probably made more money than Other M, because it didn't cost as much to produce. Sales are irrelevant if you don't factor cost.

Besides, I consider games as art, and Retro wanted to make Donkey Kong, not Metroid, because they were fed up with Metroid. I'm happy they did the game that they wanted to make rather than what suits thought they should make. Also, commercial success or not, the game is a masterpiece, isn't it?

But you have to consider that Tropical Freeze was an HD game and none of the Metroid games were.

Someone said that it was weird that Splatoon was going to sell better than TF. That's not a big feat. It selling more than WW HD and Wii Party is.

GOTY contender and over 1 million sold copies by the end of the year.

No doubt in my mind, this will be the most successful Wii U game for 2015 both critically and sales wise.

My original prediction was 1 million by the end of the year, now I'm expecting between 2 and 2.5 million.

Now lets see which sells more SMM or Splatoon

Nope this is easily going to outsell XBX and Mario Maker

Nothing crazy, lifetime Splatoon will easily sell more.

Anecdotal, but at evo today and yesterday, there was a two hour wait to play splatoon, and it's been out for months.

I'd say yes.

Wow, really? That's crazy.

I think Spla2n on NX has the potential to be massive. Hopefully Nintendo can get it out during that console's first year on the market.

"Matchmaking commercial"? Which one is that?

EVO had a commercial for Splatoon about the free August update:
Team matchmaking (custom stuff we knew about)
+More maps
+More gear
+More fun

Funtimes indeed and it's the very same people that downplay Splatoon in any thread they have an opportunity. I guess they don't like the crow they got served and are taking it out on the poor squids.

No doubt it is going to be the second biggest game in Japan on the Wii U, possibly the best selling console game in Japan this year.

Expecting dat 2 mil announcement soon(after the August Update)

Dat bump.

Anyway, it feels great to be right. And the lines at EVO for this game sound insane given how long ago Splatoon came out. Nintendo clearly has a mainstay IP, now. That "Mario Kart of shooters" analogy may not be as far off as originally thought.

Pretty much confirmed as the Next Major IP for Nintendo at this point.

Should reach that 2 Million mark fairly quickly if the legs keep going.

A lot of people were saying BOMBA but it's a ROLLA. Just keeps rolling on
It'll likely hit 2 million worldwide around the time of the August update. If the EVO ads are any indication, Nintendo's gonna ramp up a second wave of advertising for Splatoon when said update drops.

Anywhere to go for a comprehensive list of what's coming in August? I googled but only found team making, customs games, and a new ranked mode variant. Anything else? (That mostly doesn't excite me given that I don't play with friends. I'm down for the new ranked mode though.)

Well, for a second it seemed like it. My daughters thought Inklings were pretty cool and hip. And they don't play traditional videogames. They were looking for backpacks, cellphone cases, anything that teens use to have a female inkling on. Unfortunately, they couldn't find anything.

Here's a cell phone case. Though Nintendo should totally get on getting more Splatoon exposure out there (I.E. the Inklings as their own characters in Smash, more merchandise, etc.).

That's going to take a little longer, I'd wager. Right now:

Japan: ~500k retail + digital
US: ~500k retail + digital

I have no EU numbers but unless they are in the same ballpark, it's going to take a little while to get to 2 mil.

That's why Nintendo's likely going to do more advertising whenever the August update is about to come out (their EVO advertisement is but a taste of what we should expect). While I don't expect it to sell Day 1 numbers, it'll do pretty damn well in August if the Big N plays their cards right.
