Just listening to that Todd Howard interview Fridman put out and Howard talks about how he wanted to make games from an early age.

My particular podcast diet exposes me to a lot of people who are achieving great things in a field they have always wanted to be in.

This is not how I am. Sure, there are things I’ve always been interested in, but not in a hyper-focused, make-or-break way. And my interests are kinda vague and generalist… they aren’t really things you can craft within.

I am wondering what you guys think of this. Is it ‘normal’ to have a quest, or is it exclusive to the type of person my podcast choice is selecting for?

I must say, having a quest sounds very appealing but, like height, I suspect you have it or you don’t.

A quest as in a goal or an aim? I guess I do. Its more of how I want to live my life. I don't particularly have any work related goals or material things, and they've been quite vague to be honest in this sense. I've always wanted to have enough, but of course the definition of enough varies with different stages in your life, so I make moves when its necessary.

If were talking about craft, I've always had a thing for art, used to be really good with my hands when I was younger, but life steered me away from art and more into sciences. I was never particularly driven to be a master of this craft, so it sort of fizzled out. Now I only draw when my kids want me to draw them Ironman or Rainbow Dash.

If you mean an goal I have. To get my second Bacharel Degree (Psychology, first one was History) before I'm 33 years old (I'm 30 now) and help people the same way they helped me; also as a stable job.

Yeah I was going to mock this thread cause I thought it was about the meta machine and I was going to make a snarky comment about going on a quest.

I don't have any more quests right now. I guess I can quest out for a good pizza place that'll show the pats game in Denver tonight. That seems like a manageable quest to me especially if I walk there cause that sounds medieval

Your quest for most people is the side mission to the realities of life that you have to work to live. I've completed many side missions but the main story line always needs to be completed.

Hmm I could have worded it better but I wrote my initial post in bed as soon as I woke up.

I meant an overriding ambition that informs all you think and do beyond life’s essentials. My own life is a cheerful mishmash. I am not a high achiever.

And if you do have a quest, what is it?

I must say, having a quest sounds very appealing but, like height, I suspect you have it or you don’t.

Depends. Are you motivated enough. Enough mental room to work with? Try to take small steps and look how it goes. It's easy to say yes. But for some that road isn't that easy. I've set my mind to goals seemingly impossible but I did it. In the end there's also a personal inclination regarding the specific goal you have in mind and your character.

You sound like me, OP. I am mostly goalless and just kinda floating by. I always was jealous of people with clear goals and drive to reach them. I haven't had a personal goal in the longest time and it definitely shows in my overall life satisfaction. It's not even like I originally had a goal in mind and lost it along the way either. I just kinda luck out from one opportunity to the next and just kinda ride the wave.

Wish I could find that one thing I really want out of life, since time keeps moving faster and faster.

I've got an Eastern European dude at work that goes to a local lake, chops ice, and takes an ice bath. I am planning to join him soon. I imagine the first few times I will chicken out quickly. I love cold showers though.

I think everyone has quests in their life, however certain people have small quests, and other have bigger ones.
A small quest can just be gathering enough money to buy a treadmill or something, and a big one could be making a movie or something.
Is not BAD if you don't have a big one, or if you don't have one at the time. It's your life, you'll eventually find interest in something that will lead you to a quest, big or small.
You also have to know yourself very good in order to avoid getting in quests that you are mostly certain not able (either physically or mentally) to achieve; like, if you don't have the patience, you can't give yourself a quest in which requires tons of it, because you'll not achieve much, and the frustration will just stop you prematurely.

Taking me as an example, I always wanted to make games since I was like 10, and with small and small steps I reached that quest's goal.
I started drawing, creating stories; then I learned to use programs and animation; I tried modding and re-spriting;
and now I'm a motherfucking programmer/artist/animator/designer/writer/synonym of cool.

My quest is not over yet, there's not a real end to it, but every little project I make and finish is a step closer to an inevitable end.
