remember some years ago a company called Phonefree ? and their television commercial where people in buildings & everywhere held their phone bills out the window, burning them--and the tagline was 'let freedom ring'. Phonefree was offering free Internet-based telephony to the masses.

PhoneFree.com launched a multimillion dollar, multimedia campaign produced by New York ad agency Hampel/Stefanides earlier this year. With the tagline "Let Freedom Ring," the online and offline effort focused on the "free" factor and carried the image of a clenched fist holding a burning phone bill.

I tried them once but only PC to PC, didn't manage to try their free PC to Phone service -- did any of you? and what happened to them ? their website has been down for years now :/
