I am now sporting 1280 by 1024, because Softimage requires it. BUT my monitor is old and blurry!

Anyone have any suggestions on making things like fonts look bigger? It's killing my eyes!

Of course, I did set the Windows fonts to look bigger, but when reading the web, and even this forum, the text is tiny and small.

Firefox does have some capabilities regarding fonts, but they don't seem to have any effect...

I know that in Firefox, if you have a mouse with a scroll wheel, you can hold down CTRL and rotate the wheel to change the font size. It doesn't work with all pages though, and can make layouts look funny, but at leas it's readable. I use 1280 by 1024 as well, but I never really have much trouble reading anything on my screen. if worst comes to worse, you could always buy a new monitor. :(

Or maybe you need glasses! :)

The refresh rate is locked at 60hz, which I don't mind.

cloudwalking, that actually worked! I didn't expect it to!

That's...too awesome! Thanks a lot! I'm indebted to you!

Hey, no problem! ^_^

I'm glad I was able to help you out. :)

1920x1440! Well, when I watch 1080p HD content anyway.

Damn lol, what's the refresh rate for that and what's the native reso on that monitor? Mine will do that reso but the refresh is 60mhz and that's on a crt not an lcd heh.

I'm using a Sony G410 that'll do 1600x1200@85 and 1280x960@100 but sadly the most important numbers are 80/30... my vision :lol. Ah 1024x768 you are a friend of mine!

You'll get used to it. Just takes a couple of seconds/minutes for me, may take a few hours/days for others.

Changing back to a smaller res is even worse

My monitor right now is set to 2048 - 1536. I have to set the fonts to extra large though otherwise i can't read anything.

It's fantastic for anything I do though, as it gives me so much room to work with.

All true color. The CRT's @ 75Hz and the TFT's @ 60Hz. Driven by two ATI cards inside a dual 1.8GHz G5.

1620x1050...or something really close to that on my lappy. 14.1" screen. No font adjustments. Matter of fact, I reduced lots of fonts to keep menus and the desktop looking clean. My desktops were almost always set to max resolution too. My 19" CRT I used to run at 1600x1200, but now I leave it at 1024x768 since I only use it as a secondary screen for my laptop. PEACE.

Nope.

800x600 on a 17" crt is mine, going any high makes it to hard for me to read and I'm not into that font adjustment.

I use 1600x1200 on my desktop and 1680x1050 on my laptop.

I can't stand going any lower these days. 1280x1024 looks absolutely HUGE...

My monitor doesn't support higher than 1280, so I mainly run all my games in three codenamed resolutions. It helps that it's only 17".

1260 x 960 - Stupid ---------- Ex: UT2K4
1024 x 786 - Respectable ---- Ex: Doom 3
640x480 - Pointless ----------- Ex: Deus Ex: IW

1600x1200 usually sometimes i go higher though.

I want a laptop thats at least capable of 1600x? anyone know of any?

For a while I was running 2048x1024 with 2 monitors (19" CRT@1280x1024, and 15" Cintiq 15X vertically @768x1024). But when I got my Cintiq 18SX, I just decided to go single monitor @1280x1024 since dual monitor robs performance from Painter.

I run 1600x1200@75 hz true color at home and work. Both are 19's, one NEC, one Samsung. My new laptop (15.4") is 1680x1050@60hz (assumption, I haven't picked it up yet, I shipped it to my sister's house to avoid paying TN tax).

I run 1280 X 1024 on my 17" CRT at home and on my 19" Trinitron at work. Any higher than that on a 17" monitor gets kind of uncomfortable on my eyes. I could get away with higher on the 19", but it seems a good compromise between viewable area and my ability to chill and lean back while I look at it. Chilling and leaning being vital aspects to enjoying work. :D

You're all ridiculous. 1024x768 on a 17 and 1280x960 on a 19" is more than enough.

1024 X 768 is barely adequete for viewing your average website and working in Windows these days. 1280 X 1024 looks fine on any decent quality 17" monitor.

The more resolution you get, the more you get hooked on it... my monitor's native at 1280x1024, so that's what I use. When I go to my in-laws' to help them with my computer, it drives me nuts. They've got a 15" CRT running at 800x600. How did I ever use something similar? How did I ever use 1024x768?

19" flat panel at work I run it 1280x1024... 17" monitor at home I run it at... I don't know... 11something at something or other. ;) My old eyes can't take much more than that... I already wear glasses....

I personally use 1280x960 @ 85Hz on my 19inch CRT. I never liked 1280 x 1024 cause it wasn't a 4:3 ratio. It just looks weird to me. I don't like anything higher than 1280 since it's kinda hard on my eyes. Maybe if I had a bigger CRT monitor or a native 1600 x 1200 LCD display. Anyway, I'm surprised there are no 1152x864 users here. That's what I use on my 17inch CRT. As far as I'm concerned, 1152 x 864 is more than plenty... at least for viewing web sites. But more desktop real estate is always welcome for multitasking.

Actually, I've got a related problem.

I like to run my monitor at 1280 x 1024, but I have to sit close to the monitor to read GAF because IE somehow refuses to change the fonts. Am I missing an option in IE to do this, or is there a board setting I can change? (I will not change my browser, btw.)

In IE, you should be able to alter your text size up and down using CTRL+mouse scroll wheel up/down, or by going to the 'View' menu, the 'Text Size' submenu, and adjusting it from there. This doesn't appear to affect the forum's text, but it does for other things. Also, you should switch to Firefox anyways. :p

Any laptop with a WSXGA or WUXGA monitor should go that high. I believe they're all wide screen. And now that I think about it, I think I have a 15.4" screen, not a 14.1". Whatever the Dell Inspiron 8600's came with. IMO, WUXGA may be a better screen, but that resolution is too high for the screen size, and dropping the resolution is fugly on a LCD. You'd have to keep the native resolution and bump font sizes up. Not difficult, but the results may vary. I'm glad I went with a WSXGA (1680x1050). PEACE.

EDIT: How many of the VESA people (1600+) have glasses? I don't have glasses. Been wondering about it, b/c I've used computers since I was in 3rd grade, and always at high resolutions. I played games and watched tv sitting really close to the screen as a kid too. I just wonder how the rest of your eyes are holding up. Mine are fine, but I may end up needing glasses in like 10-15 years since my left eye is starting to fall behind my right eye. I'm sure both are still better 20/20 or better, but it concerns me that I'm now developing a strong and weak eye. PEACE.

I tried Firefox once and thought it was slow and cumbersome compared with IE. Same for Opera and Mozilla. Unless the interface has become as elegant as IE's is, I'm going to stick with this one.

Sucks that I have to squint to read GAF though...

Uh, which version of Firefox were you using? Crazy Crackhead Man Edition? Firefox's UI is pretty similar to IE's, all of its shortcuts keys work in it, and I can vouch for the fact that it is MUCH faster at rendering pages. And IE's interface 'elegant'? Surely you jest! Methinks you need to try the newer version of Firefox.

In Firefox you could do: Tools -> Options -> General -> Fonts & Colors -> and set Minimum Font Size. Just figured that out :)

There you go, yet another reason to switch. Make sweet love to the Firefox. DO IT!

Fine, I'll give it one last chance.. my previous encounters were not impressive, but they were on slower machinery. (They were also the Mac versions, if you must know. I now have a Winblows machine.)

You won't regreat it, and if you do, well, it's still somehow your fault. :D

I just upped my monitors res from 1024X768 to 1280X1024 thanks to this thread.

I'd forgotten how much better things looked. Although the text does seem awful small at first....
