DOA4 Interview at 1up (Spartan/Bungie-centric)

1UP: What sort of materials did you use to create the Spartan models and environments? Did Bungie help you out by giving you the wireframes and 3D data for the characters and Space Station background from Halo 2 so you could build upon them for DOA4, or did you do it all from scratch?

Tomonobu Itagaki: So Bungie was very enthusiastic about this from the get-go and they sent data, object model data and said 'use this as a starting point to build the station and the character.'

An interesting article and interview with Itagaki regarding the collaborative effort between Team Ninja and Bungie.

I read that the Spartan might not be the only Halo character in DOA4, btw :)
It was just a rumour in Famitsu, but you never know...

A Cortana alternative costume for that glowing girl I bet!

I certainly hope he didn't go all the way to Japan -just- for DOA4 though...however, lots of detail in that article/preview/interview.

But I really wish everyone at Ziff Davis aside from James was so enthusiastic for DOA4. He's a fan of the game, the producer, and the company itself, but I want to know what a "not-so-big" DOA fan thinks of it. If it can convince even that guy, than I'll check the game out. If Matt (let's say) reviews DOA4 and gives it a good score, I know it's a good game for sure.

Don't you worry about why we went to Japan.

Let our competition worry about it.

Spartan does have a couple throw attacks that utilize certain elements lifted from Halo, although we're sworn to secrecy so as not to ruin the surprise. Let's just say anyone who gets caught in a certain throw will find themselves in a sticky situation.

hehehe...sweet.

Hope Mielke (or whoever) is planning then to do interview with FromSoft guys on eM/AC4/Chrome Hounds.

There is the U.S site for the product. No news on the release date. However, I would not be shocked to see it come state side very close to the DOA4 launch. The 59.99 MSRP is nice though.

I'm looking into getting an X-arcade stick for this game and some others, but that port on the Hori stick has me a little worried about where the mic would be plugging in on Xbox live :(

the halo themed stage looks good! looked weak from the previously released shots

with strats like "mixing up high and low attacks" it's no wonder he can hang with Japan's best.

That paragraph with him talking about his fighting game "strategy and instincts" is hilarious :lol. He's so good he can beat up his staff in office matches!

Spartans CG ending should be cool, perhaps hinting at Halo3? :o

I like the way you think, but I remember reading that she is from a different time period than Master Chief so that may be unlikely. Not impossible though.

Thanks for clearing that up..

Not that im upset, Team Ninja directing a scene set in the Halo universe is more than enough :D

My money is on a metroid ending for the spartan.

Takes the helmet off to reveal a dude..with a beard

The halo geek inside me would scream if she was MCs daughter because he's not supposed to have a sex drive.

I was under the impression that all the females were sterile and the males impotent anyway because of all the chemical and physical enhancements. Maybe I'm thinking of another supersoldier story from another universe though.

Wow, the stage is bigger than I expected. Looks AWESOME too.

I would love it if some new information about a certain other Team Ninja game was found out and made public but I don't expect anything till next year.

I hope Halo 3 looks better than that...

:lol

Perhaps I'm wrong, but I think it's pretty obvious that the stage is just a mildly updated version of that one room in Halo 2 from the first stage...

I have to say that I really really enjoy these 1up Team Ninja features. They are, pretty much, my favorite feature from 1up mainly because Itagaki is a really great person to interview.

Some of the character move change sto DoA4 sound awesome.

Every character's move list has gone through a major revision, with the majority of the highly-animated, but less than effective moves taken out in favor of faster, more confrontational attacks. Ryu Hayabusa is a good example of this. Knowing that his stock has risen thanks to the recent Ninja Gaiden games (Ninja Gaiden and Ninja Gaiden Black), Itagaki wanted to make him feel more like a "super ninja" than some hand-standing acrobat break-dancing his way to victory.

:D

Itagaki told me during our heated battles that he wanted to do everything in his power to make this the best fighting game he could. He feels as if he has nothing left to prove after this, having created a fast, beautiful fighter, with online play and an ambitious lobby system. The game is also hardwired for future downloadable content, although that is not currently on Team NINJA's agenda. It's just good to know in case they decide to make special downloadable outfits for Easter or something. Zack in a bunny suit -- you know you want it. Still, Itagaki is so determined to make sure that DOA4 is as polished and fluid and fun as he can make it that he pushed back the game's release so he could put it through an intense, Marine-style boot camp of balancing and tuning, bringing in six of Japan's top DOA players to test it from midnight to noon every day for four weeks straight. It's these very players that, following my interview with Itagaki, he threw me into the ring with to truly test my resolve.

Wow. Going through a lot to fine tune this game. Also, could this be the last DoA fighting game Itagaki works on?

The DoA haters better get their shots in now while they can. It seems like DoA4 is Team Ninja's swan song and the fighting series may be shelved for awhile after this game is out.

Two reasons maybe:

A) The game is just so ridicously "been there done that" they don't care anymore. It's beyond shit and since only a fraction of GAF actually cares about the title nobody cares to hate on it.

B) Crow eating, the reasons for talking smack aren't there anymore.

I asked this in the main Xbox 360 thread, but we still don't have an official release date right?

Most sites list 12/1 as the date, but that is normally just a placeholder date.

Any word on when we will be getting this into our grubby little hansd?

Here is what the article states (READ IT :P ):

At the end of the day, before we went out for Indian food in the Ichigaya district of Tokyo, Itagaki and I spent more time talking about the other features in the game, particularly the awesome CG endings. Like many of the previous DOA-related games, DOA4 features music by Aerosmith (Steven Tyler should be thankful), which appears in more than one area for added effect. Unlike past DOA CG endings, which were throwaways with little coherence, DOA4's actually make sense if you've followed the saga until now. Some are comedic, some are serious, and I won't describe any of them to you so as not to spoil anything. I will say, however, that many of them dovetail into the true, final ending, which belongs to Helena, the main character of DOA4. Helena isn't even playable until you beat the game with all of the default characters, guiding you towards the lengthy and surprisingly moving final CG sequence in the game. Why do I say moving? Well, judging from what the CG ending's story line seemed to suggest (although it could easily be construed as open-ended), I got sort of a sad feeling from it, like something was over. I asked Itagaki about it. He says he's done everything he set out to do in making the best fighting game he's able to make. Before, in his war against Tekken, he'd first trumped Namco on a visual level, and then as the DOA series went on in terms of multi-tiered stages, fast action, and a rewarding reversal system (this is, of course, subjective to the player -- I'm just the messenger here). Then came the fast tag-battle action, which preceded Tekken Tag Tournament. Then came the online play, which Tekken has never offered to this day. And now, a reinvented combat system, online lobby (with virtual houses for each player), and high-quality CG endings, all in a launch title for Xbox 360. Itagaki thought his game had surpassed Tekken long ago, and now DOA4 -- in his eyes -- confirms this fact on every level. His feelings don't extend to Tekken only. He really believes this is the 3D fighter that offers it all -- it's the game to beat, and based on the evidence it's hard to argue with this logic.

Itagaki talking about playing co-op with his daughter in Halo 2:

1UP: Did you ever consider adding the Arbiter?

TI: No, we really didn't consider that at all. I really like the Spartan, so I didn't really think about any other options but this one character. As I mentioned earlier, I like the cooperative play in Halo 2, and I play it with my daughter. And we like the sections with Master Chief better than the Arbiter sections, and when we get to the areas where we play as the Arbiter she asks, "Why aren't we the Master Chief any more? Why are we the Arbiter?" This is just a personal preference. So when we get to those sections we just try to get through them as quickly as possible so we can go back to being a Spartan.

Hahaha. Arbiter has been Raiden-ized I think.
