Does anyone still use USEnet for posting?

Back when I first got the internet back in 1997, there really wasn't much in the way of message boards (forums). I had always been a FIDOnet whore. Trolling thier political and gaming forums (oh the fun of the Jaguar forums). The AOL message boards were full of in-breds that were incapable of posting more than three words. Awful.

Then I "discovered" USEnet. I used to hang out on Rec.Sports.Pro-Wrestling and the college football boards. It was pretty chaotic. Unmoderated and crazy. People with multiple handles and personalities. The sheer bulk of posts made it so ad spamming wasn't a problem.

Deja news used to be a pretty good archiver, then Google bought them out. I thought that might cause a rebirth in some of the USEnet boards .. but they seemed to be dwindling out. I haven't visited one in a while now, anyone still frequent them?

Here's a nice article (Dated 6/13/05) about USEnet:

Nope haven't used it since my university days (way back in 1996) during the upcoming .com boom. I do like searching through the old posts using google though. It's kinda neat finding old messages that I've posted back in the days.

Used to lurk on that rec.videogames one and I'm sure a few other GAFFers did also.

Of course USENET/NEWSGROUPS is still used. Porn and warez are its backbone.

Yup.

And Bittorrent users who get copyright warnings in the mail from the MPAA wonder why they do...

I remember DarrienA regularly posting on the sega newsgroups.

I still read a number of newsgroups on a regular basis, but post less than I use to. Mostly I use them for gathering news, info, and opinions on games, systems, etc.

DarienA is Darien Allen? Yeah, he used to troll the sega group nonstop.

Has to be the same person. Both are a bigtime Sega fans.<<<

No. The guy I'm thinking of was huge Sony fanboy that liked to bait the Sega group.

Ha. I remember when someone posted to r.g.v.* as "Darian Allen" and everyone thought he was a Darien Allen hack. The latter wasn't really a troll (unless you consider him a pro-EA troll here, then... well, hrm).

The two biggest "trolls" around those parts were Omarichu and Charles Doane - neither or which I really butted heads with. But, man, those two had enough heat to melt the polar ice caps.

I read and post to rec.bicycles.racing, which consists almost entirely of Belgian humor and heated discussions about doping products. Lots of fun.

I've always wondered, is usenet the same thing as newsgroups? a subset of all newsgroups? or something entirely different?

just talking newsgroups, I use it for porn... and uh... more porn.

Started reading newsgroups last week (for help with adom and nethack, honestly =\)

are they moderated by actual moderators are they self-moderated by the posters? ..from what I saw there didn't seem to be any actual mods
