The games overrated, combat doesn't ever get better, enemy variety was lacking, and the world/level designs just felt uninspired. Only ever played through route A, route B makes you play through the same shit again. No thanks.

Yeah, I had no desire to play any of the other routes.

It's one of the best games I've ever played (along with its prequel, Replicant). Very special. One of very few games that actually made me feel things deeply. But it's definitely a slow burn. I gave up my first time playing, too. Combat gets more in depth after a bit and the map gradually opens up with more side quests to do and such. But it also depends on how much you can connect with the characters, too.

I bought the original Nier for PS3 when it came out, but for some reason never played it. I bought Automata about a year after it came out, but insisted on not playing it until I played the original Nier first. I ended up waiting until the Nier Replicant PS4 remaster. Played that in 2021, thought it was just OK. Then I finally played Automata and thought it was great. Weird as shit in the best possible ways. Trippy original story, easy breezy fun gameplay.

If you don't like the combat, and the story/music/world aren't appealing to you, I can't see it clicking for you. It's an exceptionally eccentric game, you either like it on its terms, or you don't like it.

The very beginning where if you get blown up you start the game over is bad. Once you get out of the Prologue section it gets better and better with each passing hour. Once you've done all the endings you will be in heaven.

Not all games are for everyone.

This one is really damn good from start to finish. If you aren’t jamming with it, then hop off I guess.

Be warned most people think play through A is good, but then quit for B because they think it’s just the same thing as A. They assume C+ is too. The game fools you end of A by playing credits when really that’s one third of the full game. C is where you will see all new regions, characters, and the plot comes to a finale.

It’s one of the best games of my life. Maybe come back to it when you’re in the right mind set for it.

I accidentally bought Nier Replicant instead of Nier Automata. That shit was so ass I'm not even going to bother with Automata
Automata is in a different league man. I beat it to all 26 different endings, It does some incredible things in making video game mechanics carry its narrative but that's not instantly apparent.
I really wanted to love Replicant which I picked up much later as a canon prequel. Nope. Contrary to Automata the plot is retarded and I dropped it few hours in.

If you need to ask that question, Nier Automata might not be for you.
There's a middle section between the first and third "campaign" that will make you drop it regardless, if you are this bored of the game already.

None of what I'm saying is a "you just don't get it maaaan" thing, some people like to treat this game like is some hyper complex, big brain high art masterpiece. And that's fine, whatever.
The game requires patience if you want to get the full experience, and for some people to even get past that start with no saves.

In comparison with Bayonetta, Automata's combat is arguably piss easy to learn and master.
But it's quite serviceable, and it does have many points where the combat gets elevated to something fantastic in some encounters or bosses.

I would say don't give up on it, because it is a unique game in a lot of ways, and you can tell the devs adore video games, and explore it in really creative and sweet ways.

But again, if the game is boring you this easily already, the second "campaign" will literally put you to sleep.

Nah, it's nonsensical brainrot. Randomly citing philiosophers' names doesn't make it any less stupid. But you'd be very impressed if you were 14. It has no subtlety and no substance.

(and yes I finished all the main endings, it's really bad and too far up its own ass to realize how utterly tropey and incoherent it is)

I could barely get through Replicant, I found to be extremely dull and cold, very off putting in general. I thought Automata was about 10,000x better. There are people who like Replicant more. but pretty sure those people have serious personal problems.

Only if you like anime ass

So a masterpiece

wanted to like it, tried to like it, seemed like it had character... but anime sounds and boring gameplay made me hit that install button early.

The game is a masterpiece, and I always encourage people to try it and push through route B to give it an actual chance. But generally what I've seen is if you aren't willing to push through a bit of monotony (that is literally INTENDED) you won't appreciate rest of the game anyway. For those willing to see the game to its conclusion, the payoff is huge and you are treated to an experience only possible in a video game.

To those who can't get past route B, who criticize the sidequests, etc - you just don't get it. NieR as a game is very intentional with all of these things. The monotony, the disappointing rewards, that's the whole point. Yes, it's true - you don't get it.

There are two legitimate criticisms of the game:

1. Lack of saving ability during the intro without any warning is terrible. You can lose an hour of progress without realizing. Bad game design there.

2. The sexualized outfits don't add anything positive to the game, it only makes it hard to recommend to people who are unable to look past that and see the game for the art it is.

Gameplay is great, and the story is fucking awesome

You have to see that this isn't only the future, it's the afterlife future. It's also poetic as hell, even in the last minute to beat the game. No joke

I liked the opening through the first boss fight and maybe a bit after that. It lost me when it turned into this open world thing. I pretty much dropped it right there. It would have been way better as a linear story based game.

played it, finished it, enjoyed it for the most part. but i'm still unable to talk myself into replaying it. which, what with nier automata being an 8 year old game, & me being someone who often replays 3/4 year old games, definitely indicates something...

I remember playing for like 45 minutes, boss fight. Died. Had to replay all of it again, there never was a single checkpoint or anything and iirc you can't skip any of the cutscenes either. Who the fuck came up with that?

I've yet to return to it, lol.

Nier Automata was the best game of generation 8. The way it used the medium to present its themes has not been matched before or since. But most of that stuff went over peoples heads, coz they either only played the tutorial (route a), they're only focusing on the plot, or they're comparing the combat to other games.

Also the second half of the game is some of the finest direction in the medium, the way it ramps up intensity by swapping the characters back and forth, and then speeding up the swap interval faster and faster as you reach the top of the tower - and finally concluding with that koshi/roshi boss fight, was absolutely masterful.

Get ready for my "does Super Mario 64 go beyond being a platformer where you collect stars ?" thread then.
Front page right now. Do NieR and Metroid Dread get any better?

Jesus Christ people.

The first question to ask is what genres they like. Then it will be less upsetting when you find out for example that someone who likes first person shooters didn’t like a top tier jrpg.

As someone who is toxifying the ever living fuck out my being at the moment I'm just going to say : Nier Automata is a fine game and you need to toxify yourself more.

I generally prefer Western RPGs, but this game is in my top 5 single player games list. It's just ridiculously creative in a lot of ways. The general action gameplay is not that special but the use of perspective switch and blend with bullet hell is simply amazing to me. The storytelling and use of new characters and perspectives is also amazing. The music is 10/10. And the ending is perfect. I want more, Yoko Taro should stop fucking about with mobile games and other BS, bring us MORE.

Sadly I didn't finish Nier Replicant. You can see this is the origin of a lot of Automata's best ideas, but it's just worse in every way for me. Gameplay is worse, music is good, not great, There is too many fetch quests and so on.. Maybe I'll come back to it, but I didn't love it nearly as much, it felt like We have Automata at home. Would probably have been much better to have played it before Automata on PS3 back in the day.

What do you mean different? You have 2 characters. First playthrough you play as one character. Second playthrough you play as the other character/different perspective which plays very different mechanically.
