does your respect for someone plummet if they endorse the wrong person?

My girlfriend has amazing musical taste.
She likes POP music though, and loves Britney spears & Jennifer Lopez..
If I only I would have known earlier on :\

Its like finding out someone is a holocaust denier..

edit:

She likes pitbull too.

I don't let politics define a person for me. To me, political and religious differences make someone more interesting, as long as they're not bigoted or hostile about the differences between us.

I've found a friend who's exactly fits the bill of this thread just recently.

But, marriage is not for me. It is based on religion beliefs. Religions created marriage, NOT God. Gays just do not understand about marriages. I do not know how to explain.

It is amazing how woefully uninformed and ignorant people are about this issue. Just amazing. Religion shouldn't even be a factor in the debate. It's a question of legal status, not religious ceremony.

It doesn't plummet, but it goes down at least a bit. Respect may not even be the right word, more like the degree to which I hold that person in esteem.

If their reasoning for endorsing the person is absurd "the other guys gunna take ar guns and tarn mah chiyal gay!" for instance, then yeah, I'm going to lose massive respect for them, if I ever had any at all. If they've got valid points for endorsing the other person, then no, I wouldn't lose respect for them.

I haven't gotten into a single verbal argument with anyone so far this election season. It helps that the state was almost guaranteed to go red across the board until a few months ago when a candidate said that legitimately raped women couldn't get pregnant. Now there's actually a chance of us going blue (in the senate contest at least) so there is reason to argue, but it's really too late.

You could easily do a point-by-point rebuttal. Nearly everything that he wrote is factually incorrect.

Even if I did spent hours on careful research and formulating my response to him, I would deem it worthless by how he's bypassing every little facet that is already OUT there on facebook on other people's pages about how Mitt pretty much a terrible candidate. I'd just leave it to him to continue to be ignorant til it crashes for him. :\

Unless he's against marriage and for civil unions or something.

He is against marriage and is for civil unions.

No, because someone's political affiliation isn't grounds for a friend-divorce. Who cares, let people vote in secret and how they want. Shit doesn't have to be broadcast and it doesn't define someone as a person.

Hell, I'm even friends with people that vote for Obama.

Well, your retarded title aside...

I only lose respect for the person if they can't back it up at least facially.

Romney really is the flipside of the Kerry coin, isn't he?
I imagine if you had a good moderate candidate who came off as sincere about it you probably really would have a good chance of throwing Obama out as you rope up people disappointed in him. As is, it seems to be a question of which hits harder: disappointment in Obama, or worry over Romney?

Though I think I'm more angry with Congress than disappointed in Obama anyway, I doubt even under ideal conditions it'd have been sunshine and rainbows, but the Republican half of congress has come off as unhinged lately. Damned Tea Party.

That'd more likely hit celebrities to me anyway. And like said there'd have to be more than just an endorsement, see that 1000 years of darkness bit with Chuck Norris.

I went to a Christian high school, so all my friends are conservative Republicans for the most part. We have interesting discussions. I have however defriended all the Tea Partiers.

And yes, I lost some respect for Mike Rowe.

Mmm, yeah. I hate hearing ignorant statements from celebrities I liked - I'll quickly put them in the "sour" category if they say some REALLY stupid shit.

He only appeared with Romney because Romney was the only one to respond to a letter he had sent to both candidates regarding his trade activism. Rowe claims that he doesn't technically support Romney, despite appearing with him at an event.

Yeah, out of most of the "celebrity" "endorsements", that one actually makes sense.

Rowe wrote a letter to Obama in 2008, but didn't get a response. Rowe wrote a letter to Romney saying that he'll vote for him if Romney reads it. Romney read it and publicly acknowledged it.

Seems pretty cut and dry there. If you have a pet cause, and one candidate ignores it while the other gives you the time of day, it doesn't surprise me if you start a relationship with the person that wants to talk about that pet cause.

Maybe a little but its kind of hard when out of the 25 or so people in your extended family, whom you are fairly close to, only 2 aren't republicans.

For the most part it doesn't necessarily bother me. There are triggers that exist - as of now, "Mitt Romney" and "Pedophilia" are the top two. There are some other ones, but they changes as current events allow.

Yup. One of my roommates thinks obama is a sign that Armageddon is about to happen in the next 10 years or so. Always knew he was an idiot, but never heard it verbally before.

Yeah sure. Stacey Dash used to be a timeless hottie. Now she's someone id just bang grudgingly. Ok... maybe not all that grudgingly, but there'd be some political anger behind my thrusts. >:(

Everyone who endorsed blame space and timedog. They're all dead to me.
I feel you on that, but there was no 3rd party candidate. If only inanimate carbon rod had run for attention whore of the year.

I try not to, but when they go on their anti-liberal Fox News regurgitation rant, I just can't help myself.

I've found a friend who's exactly fits the bill of this thread just recently.

I thought he was pretty awesome well-rounded guy. And then this whole Chick Fila mess got me wondering about his stance as a gay man while he's a Republican. So I asked him about in a message... and well...

You had me going for a second there, until I read this part:

You are cool, so there is nothing wrong for you to think that we should have options for such diversity. Obama is!!! He divided us. He made his party a bit racist. Republican Party is NOT racist at all, and no they are not against gays. It is the lies made by liberal medias. Republicans care about freedom, business, job, lower tax rates, smaller goverment, and super boarder sercue.

What the fuck is a "super boarder sercue"? No could possibly be able to read enough on the issues to know this much and seriously type something like this out. You had me going tho.

Nah. There is more to friendship than politics. My wife and I are pretty much polar opposites when it comes to who we vote for.

Can't imagine how this could work in this day and age. If you asked me if I could date a Republican 4 years ago I'd say "Sure, I can overcome such petty differences". But nowadays it seems like the type of person you have to be to be a Republican just isn't the kind of person I want to be close to.

Cheers for making it work, though. You guys must be super chill.

No, as a conservative it would mean that the list of people I respect would be nil since my personal viewpoints run contrary to pop culture icons.

No, I have many liberal friends who are adamant about voting for Obama. I write for the student newspaper and occasionally do conservative-themed columns, but that hasn't strained my relationship with the liberal-minded columnists. We disagree strongly on just about everything, but we still get along great.

And I don't care about the political views of actors, musicians, etc. They're delivering a product to me that I want, and that's all that matters.

I mostly just respect people who see through the lies and oppressive limitations of electoral politics, and support radical, directly democratic means of political change.

Yes, I made sure all the celebs I cared about were rooting for Obama.

Politics reveal a lot about a person so it definitely changes my opinion about them, but I wouldn't say plummet.

No, I separate politics and personal feelings. Also, I'm a pretty left-wing Democrat and pretty much all of my close friends are libertarians/conservative Republicans.

Usually not, because 98% people are just regurgitating the stuff they hear their friends/parents/radio/BS website say without really understanding the full context. They say the stuff they think they're supposed to say when it comes up(usually nonsensical stuff, i.e. Mitt Romney is a racist/Obama is buying votes with free handouts), but it doesn't have much to do with who they are.

There are some people whom really believe awful, actively cruel things deep down, people who actually think about it. And yes, I do lose respect for those people.

I'm the opposite. Ignorance puts you on a short leash with me. If I confirm wilful ignorance, you're dead to me.
