does your respect for someone plummet if they endorse the wrong person?

I only lose respect for people who demonize and call the other parties names - its so unproductive and childish

Yes, of course it can, but doesn't mean that any endorsement differing from mine is wrong. Romney / Obama? I can still respect you even though I already have my preference. A violent "freedom fighter"? That could put some distance between us. More than anything, noticing an unexpected endorsement come from someone I respect gives me a great opportunity to reevaluate the endorsed person and hopefully become less of a stubborn ass.

It's not really about candidates or even their policies, it's more about a person's perspective and core values. You can respectfully disagree on fiscal policies or budget proposals, but when it comes to social issues what do you say to a person who supports the oppression of minorities? Those kind of visceral positions can completely change your opinion of a person.

And as others have said, in certain extreme cases like RomneyRyan - absolutely.

Yes. It makes me question their judgement. You can support a Republican for a specific position and that's fine, but to support Romney? Nah.

Yep. If it's a rich person (President of my company and my boss) I wouldn't change opinion of them because it make sense but if its someone who I know isn't wealthy I wouldn't look at them the same way.

You're a member now? congrats

No, I find that ignorance and general stupidity is not limited to which political candidate is supported. People from all different political backgrounds have fucked me over, because people often hide their philosophical identity in favor of selfishness or greed, and yeah, judging people based on what they've done to me is selfish, but I won't lie and pretend that everything I do isn't based on progressing myself.

I honestly don't care who people support politically, but it does annoy me when people put themselves on some pedestal of superiority because they just happen to be supporting the greatest progression mankind has ever seen, and anyone with a different opinion is a terrible human being who must be tarred and feathered for their heathenism.

Usually, yes, especially when it comes from the Christian right.

Though I can also gain respect if they vote more like me. Balance.

So long as they dont hold some crazy, nutbar positions, I wouldnt care.

Well, scratch that. Id lose respect for anyone who supported Michele Bachmann since she is the epitome of a crazy wackjob

Depends on the persons situation.

If you're wealthy or on your way to being wealthy and you vote Republican.. fine. Whatever. I get it. I think no more or less of you. If you're impoverished, gay, female, a minority, and still voting republican after all the years of bullshit they've done, or tried to do to you, and you're not wealthy? Then I question your intelligence, or lack thereof. Period. I do think less of you.

If you're making major bread I understand the tactic in wanting to make even more. It's selfish as the fuck but it makes logical tactical sense. But if you're not.. and you're co-signing this party... Jesus Fucking Christ *sigh* I don't even know what to say to you, because there is no logic or tactic in that shit....

The hilarious part of this is that Romney was the most palatable of people who were running on the GOP ticket.

Depends on how much respect I have for the person in the first place. But usually not really. All I ask is you have some basis for your choice, and are well-informed. I don't mind if people disagree with my POV at all. There are so many faces to an individual, I think it'd kind of be silly to dismiss them over one particular POV.

I now know why people say discussing politics is off limits at social events. I must be one of the rare people that can disagree with someone and still be good friends with them. Hell, the only thing I can agree on with a good friend of mine is the ranking of Star Wars movies.

I don't even think he makes particularly good arguments, but maybe that is just because I disagree with him?

only if the person talks like they can predict the future.

Obama wins means hell on earth!
Mitt wins means puppies and rainbows!

thats when I judge a person. based on how crazy they get. or if they say they want to vote for a person who is not even running. throwing their vote away people.

Yeah this. Just have some legit issues and what not.

Often times it's small things about the candidates that people choose to disagree with that frustrate me

I tend to judge a person based on how well-informed he is. If he has researched the topic, and supports a candidate I don't approve of, I have no problem with it. But if he's uninformed and blindly supports a person, even if that person is the same person I support, then I have a problem.

Well it is not like I'd expect anything from someone like Meatloaf or some young know-nothing actor. It is not like I had much respect for them at all other than appreciate their performance.

But song-writers like Bruce Springsteen, Bono, Neil Young . . . I'd be disappointed if they were lugheads.

Eh, I tend not to care too much. It certainly affects my judgement but I won't think they're a total idiot and lose all respect or something.

I personally don't get bothered by differenceinI positions much. What I cant stand though is the spam about that shit even more so when people think they are hip and cool spamming tweets of fake accounts etc.

So fucking obnoxious

I never choose my friends based on politics. I also never let it get in the way of my fun or entertainment but I do hate celebrity endorsements because they always seem so pious to me.

I lost all respect for Dave Mustaine after he endorsed Santorum, but that is only because I thought he was much more left-leaning than that. Maybe I've been interpreting his songs the wrong way all these years.

Holy shit! I remember Mustaine endorsing some Republican . . . but I forgot it was Santorum. Mind Blown. Again.

Obligatory Pic.

Joss Whedon on Romney

Sarah Silverman PSA

This election its seem to help me fall even more in love with those I love.

As a whole I'll go with yes to influencing, but still loving them. Friendships - like relationships - should be on a foundation of many shared and differing beliefs. I like to be challenged and have respectable debates on politics, current issues, movies, tv, food, etc.

You must hate it whenever people say Mitt is going to ruin America and destroy the economy etc then.

I disagree on issues with plenty of my friends/family, i can deal with different worldviews.

Unless your openly racist or some kind of religious zealot i don't loose respect for a person.

Some people are ignorant/uninformed. In fact a lot of people are, if I lost respect for all of them i wouldn't be respecting a lot of people.

also, people have different priorities on political issues. Especially in a system in which you can only choose between 2 persons you are bound to disagree on some issues with both kandidates. Even though a lot of people talk about it i don't think gay marriage is particularly high on the priority list of most people for example.
