Dolphin - Emulating Wii and Gamecube Games

Wow, those screenshots look like the Nintendo Bullshots! ;) I just tried Mario Galaxy outputted out to my 720p TV with a 4x native resolution. . . . OH MY GOD! :O It looks better that New Super Mario Bros U.

Err, overclocking your CPU by ~5% isn't going to result in a 500% performance increase. You obviously had something else holding your performance back that you fixed.

But that's odd, because I changed nothing else. Nothing in my computer configuration, GPU, RAM, and nothing in the emulator settings. I honestly have no idea, but I'm not going to question it.

1. Can you uninstall the Homebrew Channel?
By that I mean completely uninstall, basically resetting the Wii to standard settings for the firmware it's on. No trace left, at all.
No, AFAIK it'll still show up in your usage history. Not really any way around it.

2. If you cannot completely remove the Homebrew Channel, what happens if you try a Wii->Wii U transfer?
I plan on getting a Wii U at some point, and would like to transfer everything over when I do. But if I install the Homebrew Channel, will that cause any trouble with that? I really don't want to lose my Brawl savegame to a transfer bug...
Absolutely nothing out of the ordinary happens. Your legitimate files are transferred. The HBC is not.

Well, I got the Homebrew Channel installed and a couple of games ripped. I assume that's okay to talk about in this thread since I used the tool linked in the OP.

I picked Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Viewtiful Joe as my test games. Fire Emblem because I like it, and Viewtiful Joe because I kind of want to see that in a higher resolution, if my PC permits it.

Which turns out might be an issue unless I can find some spare horsepower somewhere. I can get Fire Emblem to run, but the audio is popping. I try to sync the game to audio, and then the game slows down. So... yeah. It looks pretty good, though. There are a lot of neat details on the character models that are hard to see on a real Gamecube. It'd probably solve my problem if I could just tell Dolphin to skip a few frames and just keep up with the sound. I mean it's Fire Emblem, going lower FPS isn't exactly going to make it less playable. Breaking up the music with pops kind of does.

Viewtiful Joe, well, it starts, but I need to figure out how to use the 360 controller for this before trying more. And it's only 4/5 compatible, so... maybe it was a bad pick.

By the way, if it possible to change disks mid-game in this? I was thinking of trying out Tales of Symphonia, but it's a two-disk game. Also haven't checked if it's compatible, come to think of it...

But first, I want to go for Fire Emblem, see if I can get that to look and run decently.

EDIT: Found the frameskip option. Fire Emblem runs like a champ now. Except for that fog. Looks like a whiteout, the transparency is just completely off. That could be a problem as it looks like that's a known bug in all Dolphin builds newer than 3.0.645.

I wish there was a mod for Skyward Sword that 1. Got rid of the HuD and 2. Dramatically cut back on Fi popping up and giving advice, and on the messages that come up when you pick up monster loot.

I can dream can't I?

You can check "disable fog" in graphics and it'll be fine. You'll lose some atmosphere, but I don't think there are any fog of war maps in FE9 anyway.

You can do that stuff with Gekko codes. Fi won't pop up to tell you to get hearts or change your batteries, and the item messages are a one time only thing. I'm not 100% on the HUD thing, but I don't see why not.

It's insane how much more fun the game is without those little annoyances.

This is incredible, but I just tried it and ticked the ones I want (remove hud, no messages etc) and it didn't work. The HUD one says press left/right on the dpad to toggle it but that didn't do anything.

Yup, we decided to take it down for legal reasons.
Uploaded it to my personal site, though.

Xenoblade Chronicles
Wind Waker
Twilight Princess
Skyward Sword
Metroid Prime
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
All Beautiful. Gotta love the clean IQ. Twilight Princess can look pretty muddy but I forget that GC games didn't have as much disc space to work with though.

Skyward Sword looks ridiculous. Nintendo really does make great use of color, even though part of me doesn't like the bright colorful look as much as what TP or the WiiU Demo shoot for.

Hmm, it's been a few years since I played Fire Emblem, so I can't remember each map. There's that one where you defend the Mercenary Fort at night, but I don't think it has Fog of War. So you're probably right.

Still fiddling with the setup, there's much to tweak, much to do. I got it to a level where the fog will be a solid grey rather than solid white. Close enough, I don't think there's a fog volume on any tiles during the actual game.

Also got the 360 controller running with it. Dolphin can even make it rumble. That's a nice little trick. Set it up so button names match button names. That will mess up some muscle memory, I bet since that puts B to he right of A, but it makes it more natural to be able to just read a prompt and press the button.

Can you hot-swap ISOs while a game is running for multidisk games, by the way?

In Skyward sword, once you get past the tutorial, the give you the option to set the HUD to "pro" mode or minimal mode, which makes the HUD disappear almost entirely.

I think there is a code to remove the message when you pick up monster loot... i might be wrong (you could also load Dolphin and download the cheat codes available to confirm)!

I put the codes in on the Wii, so I'm not exactly sure how to do it in Dolphin, but I know it's possible... Hmm, maybe there is a guide somewhere?

Has anyone dabbled with making custom textures here? I want to do a few fixes for Skyward Sword. Namely making Link's face not look so odd, but also other stuff like ground textures, foliage, etc.

My problem was I hadn't gone into config and ticked 'enable cheats'. No hud is glorious!

Only thing now is that the codes I downloaded didn't include Fast Text, and when I tried to add it to the config file manually it didn't work :/

Hi, new to the forums, been looking at all the beautiful HD screen shots from Dolphin, have it installed on my current computer, but barely plays anything.

Anyways, I'm looking into getting a laptop for College, and my hobby of making music, and the specs are as follows:

15.6" Envy Sleekbook
GENUINE WINDOWS 7 HOME PREMIUM (64-BIT)
NEXT GEN AMD A6-4455M ACCELERATED PROCESSOR
MEMORY 4GB DDR3
2 MEMORY SLOTS
500GB HARD DRIVE

Would the specs be able to handle Dolphin in any manner? Like even things set to minimum and 720p as the "highest" possible resolution while maintaining a smooth frame rate of 30-60?

Really just wanting to play Melee and Brawl on the thing, and maybe play other games in my collection (Wind Waker, F-Zero, Skyward Sword, Mario Kart Wii, Sonic Colors, etc)

Also, as a bonus question, since I don't know much about specs on a computer for gaming, but could this also theoretically be able to handle many computer games (Left4Dead2, Sonic Generations, other Steam games?) I probably want to get into PC gaming as well.

I don't know about PC games (though I suspect you'd be able to run the games you listed), but you probably won't be able to get good performance out of Dolphin. It's very reliant on CPU power and clock speed, it's just not very well suited to laptops.

Unfortunately, that laptop won't be fast enough for your requirements.
That CPU is horrible for emulation and for PC gaming.

You should look for a laptop with an Intel 3rd generation CPU and a decent GPU, preferably a GT 540M+ for 3x IR.

We've benchmarked The Wind Waker on the Dolphin forums. You can check out the results here and see what kind of CPU you need for it.

Is the Wii Overlord a different game because Overlord 1 & 2 have native PC versions.
It is. It's called Overlord Dark Legend and it's a prequel to them.

It was done by Climax, the same dudes that did Silen Hill Origins and Silent Hill Shattered Memories so expect their casting shadow tech/obsession to be all the rage, all the rage for a Wii game anyway.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong (this is the first time I've attempted to use Dolphin), but I can't get Xenoblade to load. It firsts goes to a letterboxed white screen and then it go to all black and does nothing from there. I thought it was a problem (and it turned out to be) an issue with my rip (I was using max chunks on a fat32 drive which I read is a no-no), so I ripped it again with 2 gb chunks and used the copy command to combine the .iso parts. Can someonw tell me what their file size of their completed XB iso is? My settings are exactly what I've seen here and on the dolphin emu forums.

My machine is a i7 2700k 3.4Ghz, 8 GB ram, GTX 580.

Edit: See below, my problem was I was not ripping it as a dual-layer disc.

So does anyone know of anyway to get the Instant Text cheat for Skyward Sword working with the PAL version?

It's like the only thing between me and a perfect game.

So how well would an APU handle Dolphin? I'm thinking of building a small Emubox to keep hooked up to my TV. I'd be rendering at 2x internal resolution, no AA, 4x AF fullscreen 720p.

Which APU? Number of cores and frequency?

Anywho, probably not all that well, as dolphin doesn't take advantage of more than 2 cores and it needs high frequencies. then again I've never used it, I just lurk emulation forums because I like the official reverse engineer tech talk so other members here should be more in the know.

I've been emulating Xenoblade pretty much perfectly except some audio crackling that happens every now and then.

Found the HLE patched Dolphin, but not sure how to export my Xenoblade save to the new Dolphin directory. Copying "...\User\Wii\title\" didn't seem to read any of the saves.
Any ideas?

Xenoblade is a dual-layer DVD (around 8,497,659,904 bytes large).
Are you combining the ISOs on a NTFS formatted drive?

What is the exact command you're using, and which files are you concatenating?

Dolphin does utilize more than 2 cores, but only when you're using the LLE back-end. Otherwise it uses 2 cores.

Right-click the game in Dolphin and click on "Open Wii save folder". Copy the contents, go to your other Dolphin build, do the same, and paste the saves there.

Edit: I think it's a problem with my rip, but I've done it 3 different times now with the same results. I can't see to find the verification on redump.org to know for certain, but the verification inside Dolphin gives me an error when I check partition 1. (right click on game, properties, filesystem, right click on partition 0 and check file integrity).

Wait, how are you ripping it? On my Wii I just ripped it straight from CFG USB Loader without fiddling with any options at all. It just worked. You can't rip Wii games on a computer.

I was ripping it using clearip 1.0.5 on my Wii to a NTFS formatted USB drive. My problem is that was not ripping it as a dual-layer disc.

I've experimented with Dophin before but I started Resident Evil 4 (Wii-Edition with PS3 controller and HD Texture pack) yesterday. Really enjoying it but I've started to run into some framerate issues in Chapter 2. In Chapter 1 I'd get some hiccups during cuts between views in cutscenes and during explosions but it was all very tolerable but the moment I got off the boat for Chapter 2 I was having frame drops down to 20 but mostly sitting around 24-26.

Resolution doesn't seem to help much. I overclocked my CPU (i7 3770k) to 4.8(I know some people push this higher) and saw some slight improvement. I'm using whatever the latest revision is (the older one I had was plagued with sound issues). Is it worth trying other older revisions to see if it helps any or am I out of luck?

Just to add to the Dolphin is awesome theme: it is. Game looks wonderful.

EDIT: Its revision 3.5-367 (latest official download on the site).

Need help: was playing a game with my xbox 360 controller, took a bathroom break and returned to "Communications with the Wii Remote have been interrupted" message. I'm guessing my controller fell asleep.. The thing is though inputting buttons isn't removing the message. Whats the fix?

oh awesome alt+f5 did something to fix it.

Thanks for posting this! I didn't know about alt+F5 but your post was the first result in google! Fixed my issue too.

I would check to see if there was a version specifically proven for use with RE4 ... I know when I used the latest version of Dolphin for REmake I had several glitches so had to roll it back to an older version.

Found a revision that fixes the sound issues but I'm still getting a lot of slowdown. I've tried knocking settings down left and right but none of it is helping unfortunately.

At least I was able to export my save to Wii. Its looks tolerable on an SDTV (though the game lacks a 4:3 mode entirely, don't remember the GC version being that way?).

Sad me. Thanks for the advice though there was a more specific build out there its just not fixing my problem (tried a few others as well).

A8-5500, 4, 3.2 GHz.

I've seen some videos of this thing running it pretty well, but I figured gaf is more reputable than a YouTube video lol

So I dumped two Wii games and combined the ISOs using Daemon Tools. I can finally get Dolphin to accept and open the ISO...but it just goes to a white screen. This happens with both Brawl and Skyward Sword. I see the Wii safety message and the "Only Interactions ESRB blah blah" stuff, but after that it just goes white. I have a good computer, but I haven't attached a Wiimote wia Bluetooth or anything yet, just using my mouse. Am I doing something wrong? I Googled it, searched this thread and looked at the Dolphin site to no avail. HALP?!

Edit:

Also, what is the best method of combining ISOs? I've tried so many different methods but none seem to work right. Command line, Daemon Tools, joiner tools, etc. The OP doesn't have any info on this, and neither does the Dolphin wiki.

Does anyone know if F-Zero GX is playable at full speed? I can run it but it chokes up quite a bit, especially in races. I'm thinking of overclocking my CPU if that will eliminate the performance issues.

Edit: I just realized dual core support was not enabled by default. Turning that on made a big difference although it's still not quite perfect.

Here are a couple screenshots I took. Game looks really nice in HD.

Had my first hard lock with Xenoblade today :( hoping it was just a one time occurrence, lucky for me I save frequently. Thinking the audio glitch is what caused it, but seeing as this is the first time I've run into a freeze so far in I'll just keep going with my current settings and dolphin version.

edit: hard locked again :| Going to have to get this fixed because I can't keep playing the game if this is going to occur more frequently now.

It seems "Skip EFB Access from CPU" may have solved my stability problems. Says it can introduce graphical problems though. I saw a shadow snap out of view and the water looks a bit different (maybe) but overall it looks like it should work well. I've been saving each save to a new slot so I went back to a few known problems areas and the framerate is a steady 30. Cutscenes still contain some hiccups switching between views and sometimes entering a large area may have a slight hitch or two but its hard to go back to Wii after playing it on here (would help if the game had a 4:3 mode).
Here is a SweetFx shot from a bit farther in the game. Might be a bit too dark but I still think it looks great. Love the glowy lava :O

So is the heat effect in Wind Waker still busted? i'm finally getting to this game after years and years, and I have the game and an old GCN I picked up, but man, it looks so good in high res and forced AA. I just don't want to fight some of the graphics effects that come with it, specifically the heat effect.

EDIT: So I just loaded a save I downloaded from GameFAQs, and noticed none of the doubling effect on some nearby torches. Not sure where in the game I was since I've never played it and thus have no context, but was happy to see no issues around those torches. That said, I can't get the game to load without the hang item fix, and enabling that fucks the sound.

What do?!

Huh... I'm having an amusing performance issue. Maybe some of you can help?

I'm playing Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and it runs way too fast. Like 110 FPS. Messes up the sound something fierce and the game runs at 190% speed. Well then... that seems like an easy problem to solve, no? "Config -> Framelimit: 60", right? Wrong. If I set a framelimit, be it 60, Auto, or Audio, the game performance just tanks and runs at 25 FPS or less than half speed.

So, how do I get this to hit "just right"? Can I tell Dolphin to never run a game faster than 100% speed somehow? I don't care much about rendering speed here, but I really would like the game to stay consistent in the 98-102% speed area.

I figure some of you have done more setup with Dolphin than I have, so you have any idea? All I really want is a "Max speed: 100%" option...

I'm running version 3.5-367 if that helps. If needed, I'll provide screenshots of my options screens, too.

Some games may run too fast on modern systems. There are four ways to slow the Gamespeed down to normal:
  • Framelimit Auto + Audio Throttle checked (recommended)
  • Framelimit Off + Audio Throttle checked
  • Framelimit Auto + Audio Throttle unchecked
  • Framelimit Off + Audio Throttle unchecked, Enable V-Sync (with a 60Hz monitor refresh rate)

If this doesn't work, I don't know what else you could do. /:
