Dolphin - Emulating Wii and Gamecube Games

I can't believe Nintendo are going through the trouble of remaking this when a simple upscale is nearly enough!
Seriously, I'd replace like two textures in that image (the carpeting on the stairs and maybe the shields on the wall), everything else is perfect as is.

That's not an upscale though.

He is natively rendering at a massive resolution, then downsampling, and finally adding in post processing effects on top of that (AF,AA).

my mistake, meant to say up-res, and your other comments are also correct. (it's way too early in my part of the world...)
What I meant to say is I think it's a waste of resources redoing all character models and so may other assets in the game, especially when it comes at the price of removing some of the toon shading effects.

Because as good as Wind Waker is, it's still a Gamecube game at heart. It doesn't represent a pinnacle of graphics (i.e, some things are still prebaked and would look weird in 2013).

But then I say this as someone who's beat Wind Waker many times so I'm rationalizing from my side (having remaked graphics would act as a bigger draw into getting me to buy the game again).

I think more of what he means to say is, get higher res textures in, fix any bugs that happens at higher resolutions, release it.

Don't add any weird visual PostFx like the bloom or anything like that.

Oh god, we're gonna get Wind Waker with Chromatic Abberation aren't we?

Any recommendation on a bluetooth dongle that works with dolphin and wiimotes+, the ones listed on the list from op are old and no longer for sale. I have a win7 64bit.

Yup, we decided to take it down for legal reasons.
Uploaded it to my personal site, though.

Xenoblade Chronicles
Wind Waker
Twilight Princess
Skyward Sword
Metroid Prime
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

in the video you asked for recommendations on what to do next.

Super Mario Galaxy is a given and surely you've already thought of that.

Kirbys Epic Yarn? Kirbys Return to Dreamland looks really great as well. Such great use of color.

Donkey Kong Country Returns is a great choice.

MadWorld could show really well on video due to the hard black and white coloring and the edges would be WAY smoother in Dolphin.

If the textures are a high enough quality, Paper Mario could look snazzy.

F Zero GX.

If you're interested in showing examples that DON'T scale really exceptionally, you can show off REmake, or any Resident Evil with pre-rendered backdrops.

Is anyone running Xenoblade off of a 670? I'm have stuttering(?) issues where the game will quickly dip to like sub 10 FPS then go back to normal.

I'm trying to get Twin Snakes running with the best image quality I can, my monitor is 1920x1080.

What resolution settings should I change? I have gone into Graphics settings, set my fullscreen resolution to 1920x1080, what should I set internal resolution as? I just want to play it in HD. Thanks!

Whichever highest resolution you can run it at. HD is 720p (1280x720) or full HD 1080p (1920x1080). The internal resolutions available are multiples of the native GC resolution, if you're wondering. So any of the resolutions at or above 720p or 1080p are "HD."

Thank you. OK I have set my resolution to 1920x1080 and internal to 4x native (2560x2112).

Hopefully this works well.

Edit: Also, is there any way to get rid of the border around the dolphin window? I'm planning to play it on my Plasma and don't fancy the top bar burning into my screen.

all great suggestions. May I also add Okami, RE: Darkside Chronicles, Metroid Other M, Red Steel 2, Fragile Dreams, Sonic Colors, and maybe Epic Mickey, Sin & Punishment 2, FF: Crystal Bearers and Zack & Wiki to the list of suggestions.

Hmm, you need the Homebrew Channel to rip your own games? That's not a big obstacle, but I have a few reservations about the whole Homebrew Channel thing. Might as well ask a few stupid questions to get that cleared up.

1. Can you uninstall the Homebrew Channel?
By that I mean completely uninstall, basically resetting the Wii to standard settings for the firmware it's on. No trace left, at all.

2. If you cannot completely remove the Homebrew Channel, what happens if you try a Wii->Wii U transfer?
I plan on getting a Wii U at some point, and would like to transfer everything over when I do. But if I install the Homebrew Channel, will that cause any trouble with that? I really don't want to lose my Brawl savegame to a transfer bug...

I don't really want to install the Homebrew Channel before getting a Wii U and sending over all my Wii data, but I'm kind of curious about getting a few select GameCube games (Fire Emblem) running in Dolphin. I figure installing it will pretty much mean Nintendo can say any error is my fault from that point on, and I don't really want to give them that excuse until I don't care about that Wii anymore...

In Dolphin, is there a way to save/load different video/compatibility settings like you can with controllers?

Given that each game pretty much requires different settings, it's a bit of a pain to change them every time you want to try a different title.

Thanks

You can access a super limited per-game settings window by right clicking on a game (in the games list) and selecting properties. Other than that, you could go to <dolphin directory>/user/config and just make a backup of each ini per game. Neither are great options but yeah, that's all there is.

I actually needed to do something like this a while back when I was setting up Gamecube games to run through Steam. I made a bat file that would backup the original config files, rename a custom config file to the name that Dolphin uses, then it would start a game. After I quit, it would rename all the config files back to their original names. I also ran the bat file via a vbs file so I could hide the command prompt window. I imagine this is not something that most people would want to do, but it actually worked really well.

Completely unstealth brag: Anyone remember the 3D Vision hack? That was me!

Make a new copy of the whole Dolphin folder for each game, that way you never have to change anything.

I think the 480p component part of the vid in Xenoblade Chronicles was pretty good looking all things considered.

If only I had an EDTV.

Also, he mentions the game running at 25fps, I thought that problem only occurred in Dolphin and the patch was made for it?

Oh what the? So you can play the Wii version without the Wiimote? Didnt know that XD

But it literally is the same as the GCN version if its like that right?
Still got waggle sword controls, that convoluted item system (really, why do I need to equip the item to B before I can use it?), and no free camera control. Guess it has native widescreen support so that's a plus.

No you can't play the Wii version with the GCN controller, but you can still play the Wiimote and toggle off the sensor bar. Its by and far the worst way to play the game but it's there.

Alright so I've just finished Twilight Princess and I'm up to Skyward Sword, I started it up to get weird lines fading in and some bizarre colours (pink grass etc).

What's the best dolphin revision and settings? Anyone able to share?

i got a new PC to make HD videos but one side benefit is that it can run dolphin so i went and tried some games.

MKW looks pretty good but i almost never hit 60 fps. i'm wondering if i can reach 60 fps with my current specs:

i5 3570
8GB DDR3 RAM
GeForce GTX 660

can this hit 60 fps if i tweak something? i was using 1280x720 and internal resolution the same.

It was possible before but I think the devs removed it due to it being just a hack in the code which made things messy in the backend or something like that. Now I think you have to mess with ini files and stuff like that to get unique settings per game (don't ask me how though, never tried before but I believe this is how you achieve extra game specific settings not available in the per game properties menu)

That should be able to hit 60 easily.

Alright, finally got a decent computer and I am dying to check this stuff out. Going through the OP, I see that the second link under "Other Resources" is broken. Was there good stuff in there?

Now, I'm going to use CleanRip. The Wiki page is a little bare regarding instructions, but I assume that I can simply put my game of choice in the Wii (it's got HBC), run the program, and rip the DVD to my 64GB flash drive, then transfer it to my computer and run Dolphin. Is this correct?

Thanks OP and all the other posters in here who have provided all the incredible pictures in here.

I didn't think OCing my i5 a measly 200MHz would make that much of a difference in SSX Tricky. Besides the audio static, game runs smooth at 60 FPS from a non-playable 10-15 FPS.

Err, overclocking your CPU by ~5% isn't going to result in a 500% performance increase. You obviously had something else holding your performance back that you fixed.

So I can't load CleanRip because it says I need a newer version of the HBC. I have 1.0.8 and need 1.1.2. The thing is, the official site is down and the HBC itself won't auto-update...probably for the same reason. I tried looking all over for the 1.1.2 version of HBC and I can't find it anywhere! Anyone have the files, or a mirror link?
