Dolphin - Emulating Wii and Gamecube Games

I'm going to do a playthrough of Xenoblade in Dolphin.

Anybody knowledgeable of essential tweaks, mods, or whatever?

There's an HD texture pack that I liked. It includes some optional stuff as well including alternate button icons for various controllers, splash screens to replace the standard Wii remote safety warning, etc.

Sorry if this is a silly question, but would there be a noticeable reduction to loading times on an SSD or RAMDisk when 'Speed up Disc Transfer Rate' is enabled or is it capped off even on an HDD? Have they pretty much locked down the loading times to whatever they were on the original consoles?

It's faster but breaks some games.

Anyone know if a TrackIR emitter would work as a sensor bar replacement? A battery exploded inside my wireless sensor bar and the thing is dead now. As I understand it the Wiimote just needs a source of infrared light which is what the TrackIR spits out.

It needs two infrared light sources at a set distance apart. I don't think a TrackIR will work.

Dolphin Bar is nice now that I have a USB extender. Need to check out Super Mario Galaxy on it soon. Biggest problem with the dolphin bar for me is no easy way to mount it on the top of my flatscreen monitors (and I need to move it so double sided tape is no help), anyone jerry rigged a solution to that? Leaving it at the base of the monitor "works" but the desk prevents it from being usable. And come to think of it, I'll need a far longer cable to actually use this at my TV.

It's a TON easier to just type copy /b *.iso xenoblade.iso

This would have been great to know, oh well. I did most of mine on NTFS so I only had to do this a few times.

Has anyone here got the game Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader run properly on Dolphin? Its seems to me the this is the only game that won't work properly, but all the other gamecube games I have tested works fine.

specs:
Gtx Titan
i7 3930k @3.2
16 ram

It doesn't work in the master build at the moment. However, support for the game is actively being worked on and should hopefully be merged sometime soon. There's a work in progress development build that you can use at the moment if you don't want to wait.

Does anyone know how to use cheats in xenoblade? Such as max ap?

Before booting up the ISO, go to Options->Configure, check the Enable Cheats box, hit OK.

Then launch your intended game, and while it's running go to Tools->Cheats Manager. Go to the Gecko Codes tab, click Download Codes, enable the cheat you want, hit Apply and you're done.

So I read that the AMD FX-6300 would be particularily awful with Dolphin, yet it's doing a *much* better job at it than my old E8500, which, all things considered, was a pretty beefy dualcore.

Like, Wind Waker runs at a solid 30, something my old CPU just couldn't manage, it's wonderful. Heck even Twilight Princess runs well, but it's rough to play, because I only have the Wii version, I suppose I could map waggle to a button and the Wiimote pointing to the right joystick, but it just don't feel right.

Intel chips perform better in general, but I agree AMD's CPUs have been unfairly derided. I can play a good chunk of my library at full speed (90% of the time, negligible dips unless vsync is on) with an even slower chip (A10 5800k), including Twilight Princess and Super Mario Galaxy.

Is there any way to play Skyward Sword without buying a bluetooth adapter? My laptop has bult in bluetooth but it seems the Toshiba driver which is required for Plus isn't compatible to my bluetooth adapter. And the advanced users only guide looks well... too advanced for me.

A regular bluetooth adapter should work it does for me. I'm using a regular wiimote without motion + though.

Wait, are you saying I can experience Mario Galaxy..in HD.. The thought never dawned on me, I'll have to rip it and check it out.

since this thread popped up...

I am thinking about finishing my xenoblade that I played on my friend's Wii.

what I have so far is:

-x51 desktop (i7 2600 (not k), GTX 660ti GPU)
-xenoblade disc
-SD card which has my save file (on PC it has folder called SX4E and inside there is one data.bin file.
-360 controller for PC.

Will this be enough to run xenoblade on PC? Not sure about the spec and I heard for emulators you need strong CPU and mine is not overclock so...

Should run it you might need to dial back the IR though don't expect 4x with 16xAA or anything even close.

You will hear the same things in the PCSX2 forums as well... Yes, they don't perform as well but being modern CPUs, as long as they are hitting the 3.5-4ghz barrier with 3 cores or more it does quite well with most games. Especially with how heavily optimized Dolphin is these days. Playing The Twin Snakes right now which had all sorts of slow downs a year ago on the same system and now I'm hitting 60/30fps (in-game/cinematics respectively. Exactly like on a native gamecube).

Just in case you're not aware Dolphin can't play games right off the game disc. You have to rip it first. If you don't actually have a Wii that could be an issue.

As it is, the 6300 just so happens to have a standard clock of 3.5 ghz with 3 physical cores (and 6 threads). Compared to my older 3.16ghz dualcore it's doing a lot better so far, so yeah. The magic of emulation, feels good man.

Yeah, I actually had been holding off on playing Xenoblade because I figured even after the bump my PC couldn't handle it... Just tried it today and I'm hitting framecap (30fps) without issue and only the briefest of stutters during, what I assume, is shader caching once a new scene loads up the first time.

Game looks great aside from the super muddy character textures.

Of course it will. The E8500 is just a dual-core CPU and at its stock clocks, it's a bit slower at single-threaded operations than the FX6300.
Overclock the thing and enjoy your upgrade.

Quick question: I finally finished DAI and I'm free to move on to another game. I'm thinking about finally starting Xenoblade Chronicles on Dolphin. I bought it to play it on my Wii U, but I don't like how it handles with just the Nunchuk and I'm not buying a CCP for just one game.

If I start the game on Dolphin and Nintendo decides to bless us with universal CCP-to-Gamepad support, how easy (or hard) is to migrate a Dolphin save to Wii (U)?

I believe it's as easy as copying your saves to an SD card on the Wii U, plugging it into your PC and using the save import feature in Dolphin.

Edit: Oops, sorry, you want to do the reverse. Damn reading comprehension. I have no experience with moving a Dolphin save back to the console.

So I've heard Dolphin has gotten way more efficient recently and I'd like to revisit playing SMG 2. I have an i5 2500k at 4.0 and a 1gb 6950. Should it run better than last time? Also, what are currently the best settings and build to use for this game? Thanks!

Well, I suppose it depends on when "last time" was, but I'm going to say yes. I have the same CPU but not overclocked, and it runs WAY better than the older version. Be sure to download one of the nightly builds.

What is a "nighty build?" Also, thanks for the response.

Those are development builds as opposed to the stable builds that are released (the latest stable version is 4.0.2). Development builds are made every time a developer makes any change to Dolphin so they are updated all the time (often multiple times a day) but they get very little testing comparatively. As Dolphin has received a lot of optimization work over the past months and there hasn't been a new stable release in over a year the current development builds are much faster than 4.0.2.

The people maintaining Dolphin will release "big" updates for Dolphin, but in between those updates there are more updates daily. They're called nightly builds because people work on them during the day then at night they build their changes.

You can view them here: https://dolphin-emu.org/download/

There are bug fixes, performance updates, etc.

Are there particular settings needed for optimal SMG2 performance? Its been a long time since I've tried it.

Has there been any speculation/news on whether the recent Wii downloads on Wii U (Super Mario Galaxy 2, Metroid Prime Trilogy) can/do/will work with dolphin? The First week deals seem to be far and above the cheapest ways to legally purchase these titles.

Very easy. There's a Wii save export/import option. It's marked as experimental, but i did just this over Thanksgiving when I was visiting family but I wanted to continue my Dolphin playthrough.

I haven't really looked into these since they were announced but last I checked people were speculating that they were just Wii ISOs packaged with some kind of Wii U application wrapper. If they are basically just Wii ISOs it might be possible to convert them into a file that can be played in Dolphin. I highly doubt that they will work without some kind of modification.

Sick! That's close enough to a confirmation for me to buy SMG2 and try copying it over. I'll report any results if I get any.

Can you extract files off a Wii U formatted hard drive?
Official answer is no, hoping this is wrong though:
What data can be stored on a USB storage device?
Once a USB storage device has been exclusively configured for use with a Wii U console, it can be used to store games, applications, new downloadable content, application updates and save data. Once a device has been configured for use with a Wii U console, it cannot be used with another Wii U console, PC, etc., unless it is reformatted.

Hey guys, just got a new PC and have been dipping my toes in the Dolphin waters. Couple of questions hopefully you guys know the answers to.

Is there any way to automatically load the last save state when you boot up a game? On top that, is there any way to automatically load up a specific game when you open the program?

Thanks!

Maybe start with this for the second question?

Not sure if there's a way to automate loading save states. It's pretty easy to do so with a hotkey though, so I wouldn't worry about that.
