Dolphin - Emulating Wii and Gamecube Games

Ugh. I gave it a shot. I'm a little lost though. This is a whole hell of a lot of effort to play one game. Is this seriously what is required to play me some Metroid? :'(

Sorry, what are you trying to do? Play a downloaded game?

Well I own the game. I bought it in the GAF buy/sell/trade thread actually, but yes i did download it because I don't have a way to rip the disc. Can't get Metroid Prime Trilogy to load into one of the games. It crashes when it loads a start screen to any of the three Metroids.

Because the guy a few posts back pointed me to a wiki page based on an error I gave. Until today I had no idea what a NAND even was. heh.

Sounds like the file you are using is a bad dump. Are you on using a PAL version? Your best bet would be to use your wii and dump it yourself. Also, downloading is severely frowned upon here at GAF even if already own the game.

Didn't think it was a problem if I owned it. Not the PAL version. I guess I'll attempt to rip it then. Can it be done from a WiiU? My Wii has passed on so the WiiU is the device I use to play these now.

I should be fine. Much appreciated though. I usually don't have a problem with this stuff but the whole NAND thing got confusing fast. Didn't make sense for what I was doing. Thanks again. My quest to play Metroid Prime Trilogy at 4x the native resolution continues. :P

Sorry about that, the text on that page that said
Some games may require files only found in a full NAND dump to work correctly.
lead me to thinking you might need to do that, plus I thought recalled doing it myself when I first setup Dolphin, but I guess I misremembered? In any case, it might just be a bad rip like bomblord1 said, I've never seen that error while booting Metroid Prime Trilogy.

No worries. I'm thinking its a bad rip as well. I'm just going to rip it myself this time as I should have from the beginning. I figured that error wasn't normal. Thanks for help.

What build are you using? ES_Launch was broken due to some commit sometime ago which caused this issue. Try the latest development if you haven't already.

I've been using the custom build posted here that gave FZERO GX a huge performance boost. I'll have to check what version it is and see if there is an updated one. Good call though, I'll check that out.

What's with all the custom build stuff anyway, doesn't Dolphin itself try to set optimal settings for each game (at least compatibility-wise)? I guess it's optimization way beyond what preferences allow? It seems ideally the release branch should have these optimizations without impeding performance/compatibility of unaffected games

It's more along the lines of hacks that make certain games run better. They tend to screw up other games so they're kept out of the main commits.

Leatherface If you're running a custom build I would suggest stopping and get the main dev build from the site F-Zero has run great (and accurately) for a while now. That may be the reason for the problems you are seeing.

Most games generally have the most compatible and/or accurate settings enabled. These are determined and set by the Dolphin testers and users.

Yes, the Ishiiruka build still has the D3D9 backend which was removed a long time ago from the master branch for several reasons. The big 'improvements' it has (referring to async compilation) are also hacky, inaccurate or don't have a good/acceptable design preventing it from getting into the master branch.

This. Or atleast keep up with the latest updates from Ishiiruka.

Custom builds are usually done for new features and implementations that are tested that way before they go into the main code. A good recent example was the work on zfreeze that was done using custom builds.

The Ishiiruka builds are better referred to as forks as it bases on code that was removed from Dolphin quite some time ago, meaning that there is quite some significant difference in the code, so compatibility and behavior should no longer be expected to be similar (in fact the D3D9 backend was removed because it didn't allow some needed hardware concepts to be cleanly implemented except through hacks).

Aaahhhh, so nice to finally play Rogue Leader in the HD resolution it so clearly deserves. Will be nice when proper zfreeze finally makes its way into the main branch. As much controversy as there was with the recent custom hack build, at least it finally got people to come forward and really break down the issue. I'm just surprised they got it playable so quickly. Still missing a few effects though and a lot of slowdowns, but it works.

Thanks guys, you've been a big help and I appreciate all the comments. When I originally jumped in this thread after being away from Dolphin for well over a year, one of the first posts I saw was linking to the Ishiiruka custom build due to it's Fzero fixes. It seemed like that was the new hotness so I jumped in. That being said I think it has already updated since I installed like a week+ ago. I'll give a dev build a try as well to see how things work there. I'm kind of curious as all the games I have work flawlessly with the exception of Metroid Prime Trilogy.

Does anyone know of a comprehensive list of wii games that are dual layer? I've run into some ripping problems because of this and it would really help if I knew in advance instead of ripping a bad copy and having figure out if the error is a bad rip or something else and then going back and redoing it as dual layer to see.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Metroid Prime Trilogy
Metroid Other M
Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love
Samurai Warriors 3
Raving Rabbids Collection
Xenoblade Chronicles
The Last Story
Samurai Warriors 3 Z

Surprisingly, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 worked for me yesterday, so I did a good run and cleared a couple of levels.

I had a 'FIFO' crash that resolved by just clicking 'yes' then the game continued without crashing again, I had the same thing in Metroid Prime Trilogy and I think it's related to Dolphin being set up to read disc faster than a standard Gamecube disc drive, right?

I'm searching for the option to make it the same and I can't find it... Only had weird shadows here and there but the game was totally playable, 60fps and all, which is a big step up from last time I played.

Dolphin actually has an entire thing set up to properly emulate the way disks are read down to the fact the inner section of the disc is read faster than the outer. Fifo errors are caused by the GPU/CPU emulation coming out of sync.

So far I've played through REmake [which obviously wasn't as pretty as I'd hoped due to the pre-rendered backgrounds] and am just about to start MGS: Twin Snakes for the first time ... are there any racers worth picking up other than Mario Kart?

Man, this is gonna be more complicated and costly than I thought...

To rip my Wii games I need to use CleanRip.
To use CleanRip I need the Homebrew Channel.
To get the Homebrew Channel I need to use an exploit like LetterBomb.
To use LetterBomb I need a SD card.
To plug in a SD card to my PC I need a USB adapter.
To play my Wii games on PC I need a 360 controller or DolphinBar, or both.

Damn.

Wait, you don't already have a SD card for your Wii? Or do you mean you need a larger capacity one to handle the rips?

If you have a camera that uses sd cards, just use that to plug into your computer. Or even a phone's SD card.

Letterbomb is literally 2 clicks from the Wii menu.

If you're going to use your wiimote, you can just use the IR sensor from the Wii that's plugged into your Wii. It only receives power from the Wii and that's it.

Burnout 1 & Burnout 2.
If you can only get one, get Burnout 2. Otherwise, get both and start with Burnout 1.

I used the brawl exploit a lot more tidy IMO and works on the latest wii OS version.

But yea the SD card thing is a bit of a pain I have a PC with a card reader so it wasn't nearly as tough for me. Also a wiimote + bluetooth works fine (and is honestly the best way) to play wii games no need for dolphin bar unless you don't have bluetooth.

Alright this is going to probably be a stupid question but I'm using 2 monitors and whenever I open dolphin it opens on the "wrong" screen. How can I control which screen dolphin games launch on?

It should open on the "main display". Check to make sure the monitor you want it to use is set as the main display in windows.

No it opens on my secondary I figured it out though I started and then moved the screen over manually and opened it up in full screen again it's opening on the right one now
