Dolphin - Emulating Wii and Gamecube Games

Are there some optimal settings for Wind Waker? I plan on replaying it this weekend for the first time on Dolphin. My specs are core i5-750, 5770 1gb, 5gb ddr3 ram.

I was going by posts I remember reading way earlier in the thread... thus the IIRC. :P I've never seen anyone mention playing through the Metroid Prime games in Dolphin here. According to other communities the separate versions work in Dolphin, but only reach decent framerates with some serious hardware. The MP Trilogy doesn't work at all due to having multiple dol's on the disc.

I'd check how my 2500k fares with the Metroid Prime games, but I don't have any of my GCN/Wii discs available to rip at the moment. Any other Gaffers who jumped on the SB CPUs wanna give it a try?

Fatal Frame 4: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse runs fine from start to finish. I'm on a 3Ghz Phenom II quad-core CPU with a Radeon HD 4890 GPU.

Some minor things to be aware of though:
- During certain scenes, when the screen goes black-white and you have to run away from that ghost, framerate drops to 15-20fps or so (from the usual 30fps). Just a handful of short moments in the entire game though, so it's nothing troublesome.
- Framerate can drop every now and then a bit (say, 10% drop) , depending on complexity of geometry, during load times and amount of enemies on screen. Both this issue and the previous one are probably due to my CPU, so people with a better one shouldn't have any framerate drops.
- Couple of glitch moments, but all can be avoided. Just save often so you don't lose any progress in case you run into one. More in specific:
1) On Chapter 4, there's a ghost in a basement after you fix the breaker. However, beating the ghost crashes the game. Run back to the elevator for a scene, then return to beat the ghost and it should work. 2) On Chapter 8 (I think), you need to pick up a phone with Misaki on the 4th floor. Game hanged on me. Got around it by turning off all the sound in the sound plugin. I've seen some people on forums discussing other glitches, but these are the only ones I ran into.

Pretty good horror game. Probably the best one on the Wii. The story and characters are alright. Combat is surprisingly fun, while still being tense. The game has a very good sense of claustrophobia and you will freak out when a ghost suddenly pops up right in front of you. Graphics and character models are really good. Some areas in the game are very impressive and haunting. A handful of rooms could've been taken straight out of a Silent Hill game.

Also, this game was co-developed at Grasshopper Manufacture, but I wasn't sure on what role Suda51 had in the game's creation. After the viewing the credits, I finally know. He's listed as Director and Scenario writer together with series regular Makoto Shibata. After some research, I've noticed that the main plot of FF4 is pretty close to his early work on Twilight Syndrome and Moonlight Syndrome at Human Entertainment. Masafumi Takada also worked on the music. There's not much background music in the game, except for the very haunting track that plays before the final boss battle. Extremely effective.

What kind of performance would I get out of Dolphin?

You should be able to run most games at fullspeed without a problem.

Thank you my good man. Time to give some a try.

Don't even bother. That hardware wouldn't even be able to render NSMBWii's title screen.

Serious answer: I don't think you have anything to worry about.

I'm trying to test this thing out and confirm it works with the 360 wireless controller for me but it's just not detecting it.

What am I doing wrong here? The Wiimote.ini file is saved correctly in dolphin/user/config. Thanks for any help.

For those here asking about Dolphin with a 2500K: it's essentially the best CPU you could possibly run Dolphin with. However, to get full benefit, you will absolutely want to overclock.

A 2500K at 4.6GHz should be about double the speed of a Core 2 Duo at 3.0GHz, which is really damned fast.

What are you using to connect your controller?

It would be stupid to get an unlocked CPU and not overclock it.

The wireless usb dongle it came with
I dunno then. Is it being recognized at all inside Windows? Should work immediately.

What do you mean "wired in"? The wireless controller needs the dongle, it's the only way to get it to connect.

I downloaded the 360 controller profile in the op but I have no idea how to load it. There's a place to load, save and delete profiles if I click on the GCPad button in Dolphin but no matter what I do all of the buttons stay mapped to the keyboard. Any ideas?

I can't even get a profile to show in that bar next to the Load Save Delete buttons. It's just empty and nothing happens when you click Load

Yeah, I tried typing gcpad.ini in there and hitting load thinking it might find it but nothing happens.

Make your own config. I don't even know if wiimote.ini is used anymore. It takes about 20 seconds to do.

His controller isn't being detected though, I'd say that indicates a different problem. Why would the .ini stop him from being able to use the controller at all?

Geez I am REALLY dumb. Apparently the .ini file just doesn't get detected for some reason so I simply clicked the Wiimote button and manually input every command (it detected the button presses and stick).

Quick question: What do lines like this mean

Swing/Dead Zone = 20,000000
Nunchuk/Swing/Dead Zone = 20,000000
Options/Sideways Wiimote = 1,000000

What's the corresponding value in the Dead Zone box?

Does Dolphin work like ePSX (and probably other PS1 emulators) in that I can just put the game in my optical drive and play directly from that, or will I have to rip them into ISOs with a hacked wii first?

You'll have to rip the game from your Wii. 99% of DVD drives don't have the ability to read GC/Wii discs.

There are only a few specific models of LG optical drives that can directly rip Wii games to your PC... since they're so hard to find now, the most common method is to rip games to a USB drive with a softmodded Wii.

Install the Homebrew Channel on your Wii and use USB Loader to rip your games to a hard drive. Use Wii Backup Manager to convert wbfs files to iso's for use with Dolphin.

EDIT: Beaten. :P

Ah too bad, thanks. I'll need to upgrade my HHD before I start ripping my collection.

This is a bummer. I wanted to go through MP1 again and make a complete walkthrough @ 1080p on Dolphin. It is one of the very three reasons why I upgraded my PC. And I am not shitting you :o

EDIT : actually, thank you to have brought this very point on the table. I forgot to check MP1 playability on the Dolphin Wiki but it looks like MP1 got a 4-star rating, meaning that it has small issues but nothing preventing players to finish the game. I can breathe again.

It works fine.

Just rip your GC disc. It won't work off MPT. You can still do 1920x1080, but the widescreen hack will cause some pop in. Otherwise it's fine.

Yep, I just checked it, thanks very much :)

Might not be the right thread but... best story-based Wii game(s)? Engrossing plot that sucks you in and you want to keep playing, that type of game. Doesn't have to be dudebro serious, could be a cartoony JRPG. Just something with a good plot.

Shattered Memories has one of my favourite plots of this gen.

Super Paper Mario rules.

So no English MP1 Wii version on Dolphin then? Kind of disappointing I was hoping to play through that version of the game on Dolphin. Love Wii pointer controls.

Not unbelievable at all - a huge reason for my building a new rig was to run Dolphin and PCSX2 fluidly at 1080p. :P

EDIT : actually, thank you to have brought this very point on the table. I forgot to check MP1 playability on the Dolphin Wiki but it looks like MP1 got a 4-star rating, meaning that it has small issues but nothing preventing players to finish the game. I can breathe again.

Very interesting! I didn't bother ripping my MP discs since I had read that they were unplayable, but I decided to give it a shot because of the posts from Crunched and you. The results...

So, played through the introductory area of Metroid Prime. i5 2500k at 4.5GHz +1gb GTX 460 ran it full speed at 1080p (the 4:3 equivalent in this case) with 16xAF and 8xAA. I think I saw the FPS counter dip to when there were a ton of explosions, particle effects, etc. on screen, but outside of those few cases it was steady at 60fps.

EDIT: Went back and kept a closer eye on the FPS counter... there was only one situation where the framerate dropped from 60, and that was during a huge explosion. Only went down to ~45 there.

Here are some shots resized to 1024x768.

There were some audio issues (really low/nonexistent boss music? no sound effects for the Morph Ball) and I already encountered some graphical glitches (the sky was dark D:) when I landed on Tallon IV... but the Frigate at least seems perfectly playable and it looks good.

Just picked up a new notebook

i7 2.67ghz
8GB DDR3
Nvidia NVS3100M

I'm thinking the video card is too low end to run anything smoothly. I've tested out P.N.03 and got it to run okay in lower resolutions but once I have it on full screen the frame rate suffers big time.

Okay, I need some help. I can't get Mario sunshine to run at 60 fps.

My specs are: Core i7 2600k @ 4.5 ghz
8gigs of ram
hd 6850

is that even good enough? Are there settings I just have not set right? Help me? Please?

Fragile or Silent Hill:Shattered Memories.

Ok, Ripped FE:RD, so here are some screenshots:

To Fix the portraits having lines in them, Set EBA Scale to Fractional, also works in FE:PoR. (You can see the problem in the second shot, didn't feel like taking anther picture though)

Attacks look really nice in motion in 1080p.

Can someone help me with New Super Mario Bros. Wii. It works well enough, and some levels are great even at 1920x1080. But I noticed that sometimes the coins don't spin, and thats when the game runs really smoothly. Sometimes the coins do spin, and thats when the game slows down. Same resolution, but coins spinning = slowdown.

Anyone know what might be the cause...(i don't really need the coins spinning, would rather have the game running faster).

Btw, system:
QX6850 @ 3.5ghz
6gig ram
radeon 5860
