Dolphin - Emulating Wii and Gamecube Games

Trying out CleanRip now, if this works I will happily fellate you.

EDIT: So I got an iso, loaded it up with dolphin. It goes from a white screen then after a few seconds to a black screen. Anything obvious I've missed?
Did you rip the ISO in 1 part or multiple parts? You'll need to break it into 2 GB chunks if your ripping to FAT32, then recombine the files after through the command prompt (copy /b gamename.part0.iso+gamename.part1.iso+etcetc gamename.iso). And did you remember to enable double-sided since Xenoblade is a double sided disc?

Wait, is the Xenoblade high-res texture pack thing a joke? Or did someone actually release a mod for it on Dolphin?

Someone really needs to make a Xenoblade guide.

I'm interested in picking this game up even though I haven't bought or played a Wii game in like two years just to play it on my PC via Dolphin.

But all of the problems people seem to be having ripping the CD and getting the right version of Dolphin and getting the game configured and finding texture packs etc. seem like a headache. If all that info and the steps to follow was just in one place it would really help.

So I've noticed that with the build mentioned above I'm getting audio stuttering in places. Any way to fix it?

Other than that its running fine so far. I'm only on an i5 2500 so I figure I'll have frame drops when the game gets busy, but we'll see.

Using the HLE patched build? Then I don't think there's any way to fix it.

I get that too, but I'm using the non-patched build as my rig's fast enough to use LLE.

Ok, its pretty rare for me so I don't care. I was just curious.

I'm assuming the save image is just something hard to patch? Or is there something wrong with my build that the image is just a bunch of random colors and lines.

Happens to me too, so that's my guess as well.

As to your question about the high res textures:

http://forums.dolphin-emulator.com/showthread.php?tid=22102

Looks like the next version will include high res facial textures.

You'll have to rename the files if you're running a US release ISO.

Also, don't use that thread's link to the 360 button prompts if you plan on using them, updated version for that is here: http://forums.dolphin-emulator.com/showthread.php?tid=14588&pid=171199#pid171199. I ended up swapping the names of the A and B button icon files due to how I setup my controller config.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but when I fullscreen Dolphin, it comes up on my secondary monitor. How can I force it to display on my primary display? I wasn't able to find an option to choose the screen for fullscreen display...

I'm a bit late seeing this, but it's easy.

Drag the game window to the desired monitor, maximize it, and then hit the fullscreen button in Dolphin. It will fullscreen on the corresponding monitor.

And oh god I'm looking forward to that custom build when I get around to Xenoblade Chronicles.

Command prompt, go the the appropriate directory, and then:

ren SX4P01_*.png SX4E01_*.png

Thanks. The game looks even better now!

Though, I'm thinking I really don't want to play this on my 360 controller. I forgot how much use the D-pad gets.

How well does MotionJoy play with Dolphin?

Anything Windows recognizes should work.
GC controllers through an adapter do, for sure. I have the Magic 3-in-1 adapter and it was just recognized fine.

I'm thinking of going through the Prime trilogy. Is compatibility and performance still shit?

Technically speaking you don't need a bluetooth wireless if the Wii game doesn't use pointer controls right?

Oh, so even without a wireless receiver I can do it on, say, a PS3 controller (via Motionjoy)?

Also I wanna try playing Brawl on Dolphin. What should I set up to give it some HD filters?

GAF, I'm confused.
I decided to use the ICC optimized build for Xenoblade and was pleasantly surprised at how well it ran on my laptop with an integrated graphics card.
However, when I plugged in my charger- the results were horrendous. Even with a performance power plan, there was tons of lag.
Without being plugged in, I had Xenoblade running on this rig:
CPU: Intel Core i5 CPU M 460 @ 2.53 GHz
4 GB RAM
GPU: Intel Integrated HD Graphics Core i5
At 2x native, max AF, no AA, scaled EFB copy running full speed all the time, even with battles, dropping only up to 21-22 fps in city areas.
Plug in the charger though, and the max fps becomes 15, no matter how much I tweak.
And it's not just a case of variable performance- the difference is night and day- unplug the charger, and suddenly I get a full-speed boost, plug it in, and immediate lag.
Anyone have any idea how to get battery performance all the time?

It might be some setting in your power configuration. My laptop had a program, not windows power settings, that had a lot of options for power stuff, including graphics card clock speed.

Does anybody know how to use a classic controller for gamecube games on Dolphin? I got my Wii remote connected to a bluetooth adapter. I can also use the classic controller for Wii games, but not for gamecube.

There's no way to do this through Dolphin alone. You'd have to use third party applications like glovepie to interpret your wiimote/peripheral inputs and remap them manually or use a classic controller to usb adapter.

Oh, so just hooking one up to a Wiimote doesn't extend it's functionality in Windows? Huh.

You can't actually use a CC to play Gamecube games with a Wii, you can only play GC games with a GC controller. Since the Dolphin is emulating a Wii I assume this is an issue that carried over. Seeing as the Dolphin (as far as I'm aware) has no work-arounds this issue, the only solution would be to do something like Jediyoshi described.

Right. Your computer isn't parsing the inputs into regular mappable keys/inputs which is all that dolphin uses to emulate gamecube controllers with. It knows what to do with it for wii games because it just maps them 1:1 with their intended inputs.

Motioninjoy has been working great for me so far.

But I can't get Brawl to run at full speed even at the lowest settings for some reason. Other games typically run fantastically, I don't know why but I cannot get Brawl to look nice or run playably at all.

Im in the process of trying to do that now. How easy is it to setup the controller and if im ripping th iso from the disk is there anything I should patch in or whatever?

no need to patch the NTSC version, and button config is as easy as in any game. you could get the 360 button icons if you want.

So what would you guys say is the prettiest Wii game maxed out on Dolphin? Super Mario Galaxy? Skyward Sword? Xenoblade?

Mario Galaxy is doubly impressive because it looks great and runs natively at 60 fps. But yeah, all of the above, and I'd throw in:

F-Zero GX
Wind Waker
Sonic Colors
Smash Bros. Brawl

Yeah got it working after some messing around. Setup the controler as the classic buttons.

Shame I can have the game running fast but when going into battle it slows right down, pretty much fixed the sound stuttering its just battle slow down now.

Probably down to my laptop specs to be fair.

Galaxy without a doubt.

The geometry is smooth and clean while the game as a whole benefits completely from the resolution upgrades.

With games such as Xenoblade, the higher resolution simply reveals the low level of detail inherent in many of the models and textures. Galaxy is one of the few that feature enough detail to shine in high resolution.

So how long do you guys expect to wait after the Wii U is released for an emulator?

Don't count on that happening for years, if ever.

LOL really? Do you think the same thing about all of the PS2 games that you constantly drool over, running in PCSX2? Or do your lofty new standards not apply there.

Probably a very long time. The work on Wii emulation got started before the Wii was even released as a result of the Gamecube/Wii similarities.

WiiU is an entirely new system that is likely to be much more powerful. It is unlikely we'll see emulation for a while.

Well, I am about to buy a new PC and I have a question about the CPU in this kind of emulation in particular: is the diference of performance between a i7 2600k and a i5 2500k worth the extra price?

It won't make much difference (if any) for Dolphin since Dolphin can't take advantage of the extra cores.

Agh, I really wish I could get SMG2 to run well with LLE enabled, I can't bring myself to play the game without that awesome background music. I'm rocking a i5 2500K overclocked to 4.0ghz and a 1GB 6950, I should be able to run this game at close to full speed almost all the time right? Is there a specific build of dolphin that you guys find better SMG2 performance with?
